AIBU?

to let my 5 year old watch Jurassic Park?

DH says it's far too scary and won't let him watch it.

I may have forgotten how scary it is but I think it would be ok, maybe I could skip through the scarier bits.

I have it from LoveFilm but DH says it has to go back unwatched.

I think it is too young and wouldn't let my 5 yr old see it myself, but his father did let him and his older brother watch JP3 and they loved it. still not really comfortable with it though. It's hard when they start moving away from disney/cartoons etc, especially when elder siblings are wanting to watch these movies.

I agree with Scathac - the guidelines are there for a reason and of course there should be parental consideration (I wouldn't stop a 14 yo watching a 15 film) but at 5, I would have said JP is far too scary. My son is 4 and loves the Land before time with the dnosaurs. I can;t imagine that in one year he is ready to watch Jurasic Park.

sorry if anyone has already said this, but there is a really good app, and a website called "common sense media"
It gives more of a breakdown of films, games, dvds etc and describes what sort of scenes might be of concern, and it also features opinions from other parents and children.
It's a bit ott on some things but I have found it useful for times when my eldest at aged 11 has asked to watch/play certain things.

I let my DS watch the first bit where you see all the dinosaurs and it's all happy then turned it off and told him it was finished. Worked fine. I would not let him watch the scary bits. It gave me nightmares

My 3 year old has watched them - he is very "it's just a film Mummy" about anything that IS just a film, but he loves Dr Who too and at moments when i thought i might have to hide behind the settee he was sat there taking it all in his stride. if he had had any sort of nightmare about anything then that might be different. But then he is weird maybe Grin he likes war Of The World Stage show and mainly likes films from the 80's like Flight Of The navigator/Back To The Future/The Goonies Confused

Gosh, I have never let DS watch Dr Who. We stopped him watching Ben 10 (but that was cos he got very fighty after watching it). I feel that even the cinematography (sp?) for dr who is too dark and menacing for DSs age. And I'll be honest, is fave films are Fireman Sam ones. At a few weeks away from 4, i think this is fine. And he is far from a baby-ish 4 year old, that's for sure.

We bought it when dd2 was learning about dinosaurs in reception year so she would have been 4. All of the dc loved it and still do :)

But then they are all Doctor Who fanatics even my 3 yo Grin

I think it depends on your child, whether they are sensitive or not and if they realise it's not real.

see I don't like cartoony things - ben10 have no idea what it's about but it looks hideous from pictures I have seen. Although he loves Dr Who etc, he also loves rubberdubbers The clangers, Trumpton etc too. Although does seem to prefer all the old things he does really prefer films/programmes with real people in too rather than cartoons - but it all depends on each child! He is obsessed with space and aliens etc hence the Dr who thing, the daleks dragged him in I think Grin

It was one of the only films that made me scream in the cinema (as a 19 yo). It has a lot of sudden scary bits that are very effective in scaring the shit out of the viewer. Not to mention all the dinosaurs-eating-people stuff. I'd be more likely to chew off my right hand than let my DSs watch it when they reach 5. Grin

No way. DS1 is getting into dinosaurs now (he's 3.5) and wants me to find him 'dinosaurs on the computer' (he means YouTube - he's seen animal clips and blardy Thomas episodes on there). Speilberg (?) did some sort of lame, fluffy dino-cartoon film, didn't he?? Anyway, DS1 has been watching bits of that, and it seems to hit the spot.

Don't do it!! It's such a crap film he may well be permanently damaged Grin

My dc's have all watched it from about 3, they love it. Do think it depends on the children though, mine are quite hardy, my neices and nephews couldn't watch it though as they get scared easily (they freak out if they have to pass a dog in the street!)

My son loves these films we santa got him a cheap box set of 3, the newer ones, and I think they are great for 3 year olds. He doesn;t watch them quite so much now, but the middle one does have some catchy tunes Smile

Depends on the child, you have to use your own judgement.

My DS watched Jurassic Park from 3 onwards (through the dinosaur phase!). He LOVED it.

I know my DD (nearly 5) would be terrified of it so we wouldn't show her.

They both love HP films and Dr Who.

Trust your instincts.

DD also watched the Land Before Time from three (they're the Speilbergy ones I think) - nobody would question that as they're all pastel coloured cartoon dinosaurs. But look at it from a child's perspective and there are just as many 'jumpy' moments, close ups of sharp teeth and a lot of content involving dead parents, losing family, being all alone in the world. Just more songs Grin

It is a PG BUT it was only allowed that rating with one big caveat. They had to say that it was still scary, something that had not been done since Jaws. In the US it got a 13 certificate.

Here is a newspaper article from 1993 when it was released. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/jurassic-park-given-pg-rating-censors-warn-parents-of-disturbing-scenes-1493077.html

I saw it the first time aged about 8-9yo and had nightmares about velociraptors; I was convinced one was in my wardrobe. Plus the "arm in the cupboard" bit properly freaked me out! >wuss
