To have had three fags today...

NoobyNoob · 09/07/2011 16:26

....at almost 12 weeks pregnant.

I know I'm, being very, very, very unreasonable - I thought it was supposed to be easy to stop when you're expecting? I had no problem doing it the first time round, so why can't I do it now?

I stopped as soon as I found out, however I'm not sure what's happened today.

OP posts:
cjbartlett · 09/07/2011 17:22

Agent - so what If a teen mom is reading this and you ve said it's alright to smoke when pregnant? Great message...

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/07/2011 17:26

I don't understand. OP feels bad about smoking the three cigarettes, she's destroyed the ones that she has left. She's hardly being blatent in her disregard for her baby. She made a mistake. I don't read a 'there, there' message here. If she was going to have another cigarette surely she wouldn't have bothered posting about it knowing the reception she would get?

I don't think many people approve of others smoking now, pregnant or not.

cjbartlett · 09/07/2011 17:31

Sorry op didn't see you've destroyed rest of packet - well done! Tomorrows another day xx

AgentZigzag · 09/07/2011 17:33

In saying 'it's alright' I was meaning what she's done isn't the end of the world, which it definately isn't.

She's not a child and doesn't need lecturing.

AgentZigzag · 09/07/2011 17:34

And even if I did mean that cjbartlett, I've never set myself up as an authority or role model on MN or anywhere else, if a 'teen mom' read my posts and decided she'd keep on smoking on the basis of them, then more fool her.

I wouldn't take responsibility for it.

unpa1dcar3r · 09/07/2011 19:03

Blimey the poor lass will need a bloody cigarette after the lectures!
Go easy, it's ok being holier than thou but not everyone has the same strengths or weaknesses all the time.
OP is doing her best, bless her. That's all any of us can do with anything.

bessie26 · 09/07/2011 19:20

DH & I both gave up after reading the Alan Carr.book too, give it a go!

oohjarWhatsit · 09/07/2011 19:27

There's so much more pressure on a pregnant woman to stop and sometimes that pressure can make it harder to quit.

rubbish

all you have to say to yourself is do i want this fag, or do i want a damaged child.

if you still want the fag after that, you need a bloody good slap

Oh do keep up oohjar it's not an either or choice, fgs. Have you heard of risk? It's not quite the same as 'certainty'.

OP, no medals for you, but tomorrow is another day. It's not worth the risk as you know, the guilt takes the good out of it so you may as well not bother.

troisgarcons · 09/07/2011 19:37

I wouldnt beat your self up over it.

I think it took me till 12 ish weeks to stop smoking when I was pregnant with my eldest; 1 or 2 a day, a day or two without.

With the second one, I dropped to very low tar and did smoke 3-5 a day. but that was the most horrendous pregnancy, totally stressy and it was the only thing that prevented me from going over the edge.

TBH - I 'd love to be able to totally quit, even now. I can pack up for 6 month (and Im a heavy smoker) but something will tip me back over the edge. Then Im back to square one.

Unless you are an addict, people wont understand. And yes it is an addiction. Once an addict, always an addict - same with alcohol or narcotics.

Frankly if the government thinks it so bad for us, it should be banned and you get them on prescription like methodone ...... but then! they wouldnt be raking in the revenue would they?

AgentZigzag · 09/07/2011 19:41

Fags on prescription troisgarcons?

That would generate an interesting outrage Grin

joric · 09/07/2011 19:45

OP, as someone else said, tomorrow is another day- don't beat yourself up.

troisgarcons · 09/07/2011 19:47

Prescriptions are paid for ..... well actually I would imagine that as only 1 in 4 prescriptions are infact paid for (the other 3 in 4 are provided to children/pensioners/the unemployed) that the vast majority of fag precriptions wouldn't actually go to people that are eligable to pay for them!

And as peopl are always bleating on that smokers clog up the NHS BUT only 10% opf tobacco revenue goes to the NHS .... I think it would collapse.

Actually, at the moment, with the pensions crisis , people should be encouraged to smoke, die early and free up jobs and revenue for the next generation very tongue in cheek before someone thinks Im serious

hairfullofsnakes · 09/07/2011 20:08

Smoking when pg is really really wrong to me and if I see/hear about women who smAoke when pg I have to be honest I do judge and think they are awful and feel really sorry for their unborn child.

Oh and I quit about three months before I tried for a baby and it was so hard and I craved them still but did not have any as to do that to my baby is wrong. I haven't had one for over four years now but still crave them every now and then but it was the best thing I did (quit)

catgirl1976 · 09/07/2011 20:21

Don't beat yourself up. LIke others have said - tomorrow is a new day.

Bin the ones you have got, don't buy anymore. You did it first time you can do it again.

Congrautlations on the pg :)

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 09/07/2011 20:25

Actually TG the price of a pack of fags is lower than the price of a prescription, unless you get free prescriptions...

Sidge · 09/07/2011 21:55

Tomorrow is another day, so don't beat yourself up about it but at the same time don't think that by having just a few it's OK.

Traffic fumes and pollution will give you a CO reading on a Smokerlyzer of about 1-5. Smoking a few ciggies a day will give you a CO reading of maybe 8-20. This can equate to up to 4% of your red blood cells that are unable to carry oxygen properly. Your developing foetus needs that oxygen!

You can't 'undo' the cigs you have smoked but luckily CO is excreted fairly quickly if you're not smoking. Start afresh tomorrow and remember that your baby needs lovely oxygenated blood more than you need a fag Smile

youarekidding · 09/07/2011 22:13

I'm sure I'll be flame throwed but.....

I quit when I found out I was PG.

DP smoked and I avoided it as much as I could until my contractions were every 6 minutes and had been for 3 hours. I grabbed DP's took a long suck, wrestled with him in a crazed state as he tried to stop me and never had anymore - then or ever again. Grin

He gave up soon after DS was born. Grin

TBH though that few hours before my period starts when I want to kill someone, anyone! I could easily have one. It never goes away.

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 10/07/2011 02:26

A significant number of the smokers I know are politicians and medics,

Don't beat yourself up OP; it's not as if you've been chain-smoking your way through 2 or more packs of super strength high tar fags a day and you can be forgiven for turning to the familiar prop occasionally.

SusanneLinder · 10/07/2011 04:11

You don't need fucking lectures or you wouldn't have posted what you did on here. You know smoking in pg isn't okay.It isn't a hanging offence for smoking 3 fags but you are putting your bubs at risk.

Trouble is, that they won't give Nicoteen replacement therapies to pg women, which is frankly ridiculous cos NRT is a much safer option than fags, cos of all the other shit in ciggies. Any stop smoking place tells you that NRT plus therapy has a higher success rate than cold turkey.Plus I have known far too many women thats stopped when pg,but lit up as soon as bubs was born.

Why don't you try an E cig and cut down/stop that way?

HengshanRoad · 10/07/2011 04:20

When your baby is born, presumably you wouldn't dream of blowing smoke into his or her face. It's kind of the same thing.

Sidge · 10/07/2011 18:33

They will give NRT to pregnant women susannelinder.

NRT (not including Champix or Zyban) is licensed for use in pregnancy and is a far safer option than smoking.

debivamp · 10/07/2011 18:43

as soon as i found out i was pregnant i bought a copy of Alan carr - easyway to stop smoking, read it in 3 days and stopped. i stayed nicotine free for the rest of the pregnancy. giving up smokking can be hard - please try the book. I know loads of women who used the book.
good luck - you can do it.

unpa1dcar3r · 10/07/2011 19:15

All sound advice nooby.
But remember that your baby is more likely to suffer from you being stressed about the ocassional fag than you having the occasional fag.
Read the book, try your best, if you have the occasional fag don't worry.
Try to enjoy your pregnancy. I had 4 and hated every fucking minute of all of them.
