I think you can judge poeple by the paper they read and I personally love doing it.

smokinaces · 07/07/2011 20:58

And I will say that I dont believe this is a real "sacrifice".

The paper will be rebranded very quickly. They will lose very little money. They have gained publicity (what a wonderful thing, to get press coverage in your rival papers!!)

The main problem is the people who did the phone hacking, and the people in charge who knew/authorised/ran those stories should also be held accountable.

But for what its worth, I dont believe every person who worked for the paper should have been fired in this.

MamaMary · 07/07/2011 20:58

News of the World was the UK's best-selling newspaper.

The Sun on Sunday will fill the gap. People will buy it.

Sad fact: People like and buy this crap. That's why these papers exist. If nobody wanted this stuff, it wouldn't get written or printed.

LineRunner · 07/07/2011 20:58

Poeple?

smokinaces · 07/07/2011 20:59

I see I am maybe the only MNer who reads it then?!?!

or maybe the only one brave enough to confess to you lot?!?!? Grin

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 20:59

But if you think the people responsible are wrong, how come you are happy to conitnue supporting them? That isn't holding them accountable (although I appreciate just boycotting 1 paper in a huge empire isnt necessarily either but it is something)

smokinaces · 07/07/2011 21:04

The people who actually did the hacking etc were 6-7 years ago in this instance and moved on - they should be prosecuted, but not the paper as a whole thing?

Same as the editor etc should be, but not the paper folded?

God, not sure I am awake enough for this kind of debate tonight!!

But given Rupert Murdoch has no intention of firing the editor and both he and she will continue to profit whilst he fires 200 people as a publicity stunt, you are still happy to line his pockets?

I can't boycott NI as I don't buy any of their products in the first place. I am just curious as to if they launch a Sunday Sun, how much of a market will it have and will these revelations change the reading habits / loyalties of the people who previoulsy read the Sun, NOWT and the Times

OP posts:
onebigchocolatemess · 07/07/2011 21:10

not me. Used to read both occasionally. Won't even spit on it in a fire now.

Mandy2003 · 07/07/2011 21:12

I read The Sun and the Daily Mail. Obviously no hope for me then Hmm

smokinaces · 07/07/2011 21:12

Cat, I take the same stance on it as I do Nestle I guess. Its not one I chose to affect the purchasing choices I make.

I know about the Nestle and 3rd world links. But I chose to still buy Nescafe, Kit Kats, Shreddies and many other things.

I know about the cheap labour factories used by clothing retailers, but still choose to purchase items from Primark.

I know about this, but will still purchase these papers.

I do have my own boycotts and fights, that are personal to me. But some things I choose not to fight. You dont have to agree or disagree with that.

Mandy2003 · 07/07/2011 21:12

News International Altinkum

smokinaces · 07/07/2011 21:13

FGS. choose not fecking chose Picking the right fucking tense would help.

LostMyIdentityAlongTheWay · 07/07/2011 21:13

News International. Murdoch's media empire.

Which, incidentaly, the government are considering giving a majority share in BSkyB, which means huge amounts of influence over UK media

And Rebekah Brooks is a personal friend of Camerons. Had Christmas lunch with them.

Join the dots. It stinks to high heaven.

MamaMary · 07/07/2011 21:14

There was a huge readership for the News of the World. There will be a readership for whatever tabloid replaces it, and I doubt the hacking revelations will put off readers.

OpusProSerenus · 07/07/2011 21:16

I have not and will not ever buy the Sun since they printed those disgusting lies after Hillsborough. I am cynical about the whole lot of them - the NOTW has been sacrificed as a damage limitation exercise and I do think that if this country punishes the "little people" who did the bidding of those in charge and allows those at the top to escape then there is no hope of us ever getting a responsible media. We need to take this right to the top of this appalling company and make them realise that this kind of behaviour in pursuit of profit is never acceptable.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 07/07/2011 21:19

I bought the Sun a while ago to collect the holiday vouchers. I honestly only managed one copy. I just couldnt bear it.

I think I am probably firmly within their demographic though.

I hate the Sun. I hate the racism most. I dont know if its still as bad as it was in the 80s because I have only bought that one copy since. It was bloody awful back then.

I hate them maily because they tell you what you should be thinking about every story. They force their opinions on you.

So does the Mail but they just do it with a larger vocabulary.

Did you see that mad headline on Wednesday? It went something like 'SALT IS GOOD FOR YOU. THE HEALTH FACISTS WERE WRONG!!!!!'

Health facists. Like Caring Bastards and Justice Nazis.

LilBB · 07/07/2011 21:20

FGS we are talking about NI not every immoral company in the world. Growing up with family from Liverpool we have never been supporters of The Sun anyway.

MamaMary · 07/07/2011 21:22

LostMyIdentity - Rebekah Brookes/Wade was also a good friend of the Blairs. She sucks up to whoever's in No. 10 - doesn't care what party. Blair etc gave The Sun huge influence when in power.

madamimadam · 07/07/2011 21:23

Smokin', I can see where you're coming from but I think the main reason people are calling for a boycott (easy for me - I don't read it but I have cancelled Sky) is that we don't believe for a moment that Cameron or the Murdochs will do anything about the immoral way in which NI (and it is News International, as most of the people concerned have moved up the ladder) has behaved unless he they are absolutely forced to do so (and DC's very quiet at the moment, isn't he?)

I'm appalled that NI have just shut down a paper to save a business deal rather than do the decent thing and force the people responsible to resign. But it just shows what cold-blooded cynical fuckers they are. It's not even about phone hacking either - they'd announced they were going to shut it down last week for cost reasons. So, to present it as a sacrificial lamb is even more dishonest, imo.

NI are probably betting that most readers won't leave them and that it will all blow over for them soon, in terms of advertising. It's up to us to show them otherwise - or I'm sorry but you really are funding a paper that acts - and seems to be - above the law.

Yes, we all pick our own battles but surely this is an important one?
