One horrible rag down, just get rid of the Sun and maybe the Mail!
Just came on the news, this Sundays edition of the NoTW will be the last ever!

I have grown up with the NOTW, if you take it with a pinch of salt it is quite amusing.

They did a lot of good work highlighting things military personnel and their families go through and were instrumental at getting Sarah's Law put through so they weren't completely evil.

GrimmaTheNome · 07/07/2011 17:47

I haven't bought it since I was at school but I will on Sunday - souvenir edition!

I really think people should resist the urge to buy as a souvenir. Even if they are giving the profits to charity... make a direct donation to make a point.

Just heard on R4 'they haven't ruled out bringing out an alternative sunday paper' or words to that effect Hmm

The only response to this cynical amputation is to extend boycott to other NI products (if you haven't already).

Andrewofgg · 07/07/2011 17:52

I really think people should resist the urge to buy as a souvenir.<

Individual choice.

And I have read The Times for decades and have no plans to change.

Also an individual choice.

tralalala · 07/07/2011 17:52

ginger...and then hacked into the phones of those dead servicemen's families. I cannot cheer loud enough.

tralalala · 07/07/2011 17:54

I agree grimma boycott I shall, I often buy the Times but never again.

GingerWrath · 07/07/2011 17:55

I saw an interview with Christina Schmidt today and she says she is torn because they gave her a voice, we don't really know if it was management level or a few dodgy 'hacks'

frownieface · 07/07/2011 17:55

I am very cynical about this, two days ago the domain name The Sun on Sunday was registered. Give it two months there will be a re brand, big launch, sales through the roof, and it will be the notw mark 2.

vogonmothership · 07/07/2011 17:58

Nothing, I repeat nothing, would have got past Wade. I shall save any sort of rejoicing until she is held accountable.

GrimmaTheNome · 07/07/2011 17:59

Individual choice.

Of course. Do whatever your conscience permits.

Itsjustafleshwound · 07/07/2011 18:02

But all newspapers are tarnished with the same brush - everyone in some way is implicated - the NOTW didn't operate in isolation!! Boycotting them is just pissing on an already raging fire ...

Not knowing (I was on holiday) is not a excuse.

Itsjustafleshwound · 07/07/2011 18:03

Piers Morgan anyone ??? He walked for FAR less ...

superv1xen · 07/07/2011 18:06

i thought the NOTW was the Sun, but on sunday?

HipHopOpotomus · 07/07/2011 18:24

Well I'm cynical about it. Seems the major hacking players have moved on already, and not so great for lots of people getting made redundant. They will set up a new paper I guess. So it's just being sacrificed to save murdochs bigger deal.

Mirdoch is simply keeping his eye on the really important prize - and can offer up NOTW to get it. Wld like to see him offer up cameron's buddy, Brookes - that wld have more meaning and relevance. And Colson must be tried for perjury.

Best thing about this is how close it all is to Cameron - what lovely friends and trusted ex-employers our PM has!!!!! He is seriously damaged by this.

TidyDancer · 07/07/2011 18:38

Yes, YABU. People who had nothing to do with the scandal losing their jobs is nothing to celebrate. As has been pointed out, this is a six-year-old problem. You won't solve it by punishing people now.

I'm not a reader of it either, but this was a decision made entirely of fluff. It means absolutely fuck all, and anyone who thinks this is significant is obviously as fucking stupid as Murdoch seems to believe we all are.

PatriciaHolm · 07/07/2011 18:45

It's a sop. They announced the plan for the Sun to go seven days about 10 days ago; rationalisation of the the NOTW and the Sun was inevitable then. This just makes them look contrite whilst allowing them to make a bunch of people redundant, which they were always planning to do anyway!

Brooks needs to be next if there is to be ANY credibility (but given this is Murdoch, I won't hold my breath)

Inertia · 07/07/2011 18:49

It's a completely superficial exercise designed to draw attention away from the BSkyB takeover bid, and from Rebekah Brooks, who appears to be Teflon coated over this. I cannot believe that she didn't know what was going on, and of course it should be her that goes from her NI position.

Instead a group of people who , in the main, were not involved, lose their jobs.

The Tories will be easily persuaded to let Murdoch help himself to whatever he likes. And he'll launch NOTW under a new name anyway.

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 18:55

This is no act of remorse: closing a failing newspaper in order to seal the deal on BSkyB is a great business move on the part of Rupert Murdoch. He will not be held accountable and nothing will change. A disgrace.

BlueFergie · 07/07/2011 18:57

All these vistims families who had their phones hacked persumably had very good invasion of privacy cases against NOTW. What happens to those cases now with no company to sue? Might be another reason they have decided to do this window dressing exercise.

As above, all it's really doing is trying to distract from the takeover. If you haven't already, you've one more day to send a message to Jeremy Hunt to ask him to reconsider allowing Murdoch full control over BSkyB.

This link makes it very easy.

Bogeyface · 07/07/2011 21:17

Yes YABU because over 200 people have now lost their jobs. What happened is appalling but why should the rest of the staff and employees pay for that with their livelihoods?
