:( iv got a college interview tomorrow at 9am. I asked my mate if she would look after my boys so I could have the interview without the kids interrupting and moaning. I just get a message now to say she's going to have to cancel cos her back is hurting. She does have problems with her back I know I'm bu with that but ffs its all the fucking time everyone let's me down at the last minute :(

I have to say, I teach at university and I've had 'mature' students (with kids and part-time job) attending university 'full-time'. Students have to abide by the 9-5 timetable officially. Obviously this doesn't mean that you have to hang around the university campus 9-5 M-F, but it does mean that if your seminar/lecture is scheduled for wednesday 10am, you need to be there.

Of course, childcare can let you down occasionally and kids get ill etc, but in general, we expect students to be there as much as possible. We also have a 'warning' system so if students don't turn up 3x in a row, they'll be hauled in.

My point is: it's one thing to think that college may only take up 2 days a week, or 8 hours a week, but you do need to make time for studying, reading, writing etc and I hope you will have enough childcare provision for the younger one so that you don't fall behind.

One student never turned up for lectures citing childcare reasons. Even though we have the lectures online, it's much better to be in the class listening with the notes in front of you. Not surprisingly she didn't do v well at all. And childcare is not an acceptable excuse, unfortunately (well, not where I work).

I know that, that's why I have chosen a part time adult course. But I just want to further my career so come next sept when youngest goes to full time school I can get a job where I can use my new skills.

Good grief people give her a break. Why would she have childcare already sorted for a course she wasn't yet accepted on to?? The OP thought she had the morning sorted and it's gone pear shaped. She's trying to fix it whilst having a slight rant on here - which is what AIBU is all about.

I'm quite sure OP isn't entering into a college course without fully considering all the implications.

BibiBelle · 04/07/2011 14:25

M0naLisa - good luck tomorrow and fingers crossed the person interviewing you is a tad more human and forgiving with the kids in tow.

sausagesandmarmelade · 04/07/2011 14:27

If you're struggling to find a babysitter for this one interview..I can't help wondering how you are going to manage if/when you have to attend college lectures?

M0naLisa · 04/07/2011 14:30

Thank you. I've thought about C/care and come sept itl be sorted but right now it is an interview I might not get a place!

Thank you, last time I had an interview at college in 2007 and took ds1 who was 10mth old with me and the lady was nice about it. It was only a form filling in thing though so didn't matter. But I went again later on for an interview and was there 4 hours :( just hope its not like that. Although my boys do sit still specially if they have pen and paper in fron of them. Haha

I was by no means having a go, I was just pointing out if she does take the children along this is a question which will probably be asked. This way the OP has had a chance to think about it in advance and be prepared.

I went to uni when I had 2 small DC's and it is very hard work, but with a proper support network it is an option.

M0naLisa · 04/07/2011 14:36

And I'll have it sorted from sept with school.

I give up!

I know she has, I was replying to the earlier post of 'Good grief people give her a break' by pointing out that I was NOT HAVING A GO.

PrettyMeerkat · 04/07/2011 16:33

I would still try to convince the friend that it won't be hard to do with a bad back.

The interviewer may well be sympathetic but they also may not and you want to give yourself the best chance possible.

Children that young, if they have been waiting around for hours and the interview in quite in depth, could be quite disruptive and distracting in an interview situation.

Have they given you an idea how long the interview will be? You could always phone and ask. Will they expect you to do any sort of test or take part in a tour of the campus/listen to an introduction to the course from a lecturer?
