to ask how often you put suncream on your DCs...

was on holiday with BIL and his family and his wife told me she puts factor 30 suncream on their DS (2) everyday in the morning, she uses that once a day stuff so she then knows he is safe all day, year round.

I had to admit that I don't put suncream on my DDs (2 and 4) every day, I put it on if we are on holiday or are out in the sun on a hot day in this country but day to day I don't. They are always covered up if we are out in the sun with hat/ t shirt etc but I don't use sunblock unless it is especially hot and sunny or we are out all day.

AIBU? My SIL can be a bit PFB but am wondering now having read in the paper this morning that a t-shirt is only equal to SPF5 whether I should be more careful...

If we're going to be out in the hot sun with no shade for longer than about 15mins and she is wearing short sleeves and/or shorts. She's got my colouring - reddish blonde. I tend to put a wide brimmed hat on her rather than put too much suncream on her face, although I do if it's very hot.

My children have inherited their fathers skin and colouring, and he burns in a second and is covered in freckles. They are blond/redhead and I am terrified of them burning.
On school/nursery days I put once a day factor 20 on them as this should cover them for playing over lunch and break time. D1 already has a tan this year on her face and arms despite the cream.
At weekends/holidays I put cream on if they are out in the garden/beach/park all day but for just wandering round I don't bother.

I am oliveskninned and don't burn, I tan instantly so I find it really nervewracking having two children who catch the sun so easily!

I hate the feeling of suncream so I use a Piz Buin spray for sports.

With DD I would not usually put suncream on unless it is sunny. I am another one in Scotland so rare it is warm enough. DD has never had any redness due to sun. She loves wearing hats and I try to keep her in the shade midday. On holiday it is sun safe suits, siestas and slapping on the suncream. DD has sallow skin. My sister has red hair and very delicate skin. She can wear the highest factor and still burn. Even in Scotland she has put on factor 50 and felt the sun starting to burn. She really has to stay indoors in the afternoon as nothing else works.

BTW if you want once a day stuff, aldi have it atm for a fiver a bottle. It's calypso brand but I have been using it on dd's for 2 years and they haven't burnt yet!

wonkylegs · 04/07/2011 13:13

I wear it most of the year on exposed skin as I'm photosensitive due to meds but I put it on DS only when we're going out in the sun(doesn't have to be hot, includes when it was snowy) for more than 15mins or so
Because I use it everyday pretty much I use one of the clear spray ones for me and DS has a regular spray one (he likes to see what he's squirted on )

never - mine are always covered up. Suncream aggrevates their excema.

hates and UV suits are good when the sun is v hot.

Highlander · 04/07/2011 14:01

sorry, hats

A lot more often now than we used to, given that were waiting for dh's biopsy results.

He never really bothered with suncream, he has a dark complexion and browns really easily, ds1 takes after him, so although when it was really hot/bright or we were on hols/at the beach etc I would put it on him (ds1,dh hates the stuff as it's 'too sticky'), the rest of the time I wouldn't bother. Now though it's part of our daily summer routine (though not when it's pissing down obv).

Ds2 is quite fair like me, so I've always been careful with him. I burn if the sun so much as peeps from behind a cloud. Never tan either - takes me a 2 week hol in the sun to go white from my usual shade of pale blue Hmm

COCKadoodledooo · 04/07/2011 15:39

That was 'we're' Blush

thumbwitch · 04/07/2011 20:20

Cockadoodle - I have a pic of myself on the beach in Portugal, hiding in the shade of some rocks - being blue. I do appear to be actually blue-white against the white-gold of the sand - it's not a good look, I feel. Blush. Some English bloke attempted the worst pick-up line in the history of bad ones on that beach - he walked past and said "You're white, aren't you!" Oh, really? I hadn't noticed myself Hmm
Hope your DH's biopsy result is a good result.

DD gets a coat of once suncream (SPF 50) on any exposed skin every morning on sunny days.

oldraver · 04/07/2011 21:00

I only use it if I really really have to, which is usually if we are spending a long time at the pool (though DS now has a wetsuit) or a long time out at the beach and we are exposed to the sun.

We had a month in Florida and a month in Spain last year and hardly used any suncream

Another vote for Ultrasun 30, from a family of eczema sufferers. It's pricey but the bottle lasts ages. They can no longer make their 'all day' claim, but it's OK for 6 hours apparently.
