To be appalled by the ignorance of my colleague?

My work colleague was telling me today that she had found a bees' nest in her garden - instead of calling the council etc, she and her fiance decided to pour water on it with a hosepipe, knock it down and stamp on it to break it up and kill the bees Sad

AIBU to be absolutely horrified by this?? I was trying to explain to her how important bees are but she really didn't understand that she had done anything wrong - she claimed that she was protecting herself and her neighbours from being stung Hmm

is it even worth trying to convince someone so stupid of the errors of her ways??

God she was brave I'd be too scared.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/07/2011 20:13

YABU.... I had a swarm of literally thousands of bees arrive in my garden a few months ago and you've no idea how bloody frightening it is until you're in the middle of it. They settled eventually in one spot and, fortunately, a neighbour knew who they belonged to... so I rang, complained and they came around with their beekeeper stuff and took them away. The council won't touch them - just wasps.

purplepidjin · 03/07/2011 20:13

Karma will give her an allergy to bee stings

Why did she not Think Of The Honey?!

BornSicky · 03/07/2011 20:14

firstly... fucking stupid, ignorant, malicious bastards.

secondly, if you can face trying again, explain why it's completely unreasonable to kill bees.

thirdly, YADNBU. they are twunts.

sharbie · 03/07/2011 20:15

they are protected aren't they??

LostMyIdentityAlongTheWay · 03/07/2011 20:15

You give me her address, I will personally knock her ignorant teeth down her throat.
Stupid bitch, she is. You are NOT BU in the slightest.

Oh - and you can report her as well. I keep bees, am having the devil's bloody own job keeping all my hives going atm with shit winters, damp and varroa mite, and I would have gladly come along and taken the inconvenience away for her.

Stupid cunt. Really, she is. Please show her my response. (sorry, but this has riled me quite beyond belief!)

Greythorne · 03/07/2011 20:16

Well, bees are vital to the ecosystem, pollination etc. But one in our garden is a PITA. i was stung by a beed today. If I found a nest in my garden, I would probably destroy it.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/07/2011 20:17

Four horses killed by swarm of bees. When bees are swarming, they can be very, very dangerous. It is NOT completely unreasonable for someone to panic when faced with them in large numbers. Neither would it be unreasonable to contact the National Beekeepers Association as they will remove unwanted swarms.

LauLauLemon · 03/07/2011 20:18

YANBU. It's disgusting and definitely uncalled for. Are they protected? I'm not sure but I know they are very important.

catgirl1976 · 03/07/2011 20:18

OMG - That is terrible. How can she be so bloody ignorant / thoughtless ? nnnnghghghghhggh. Maybe if you can face her try slowly explaining why we need bees and what the problems are at the moment. Probably wont get you far as she soudsn spectacularly stupid

bubblesincoffee · 03/07/2011 20:19

I wouldn't be horrified, I'd be amazed at the bravery!

I know that beekeepers round here would come and get and actually pay you for the privelidge.

JazzieJeff · 03/07/2011 20:24

I know they are important... But what happens when you call the council to remove them? Do they put them in a safe location to protect them?

But yep, that does sounds a) incredibly stupid and dangerous and b) really rather cruel to me.

purplepidjin · 03/07/2011 20:27

buy her a present

Sooooo, can someone on here explain the importance of bees to teach us ignorants?

flipthefrog · 03/07/2011 20:43

they are pretty harmless, we have a nest right next to the back door - they are in danger now :(

think it's really sad but people are generally ignorant unless interested in nature

BellaBearisWideAwake · 03/07/2011 20:43

The number of bees is decliningly scaring rapidly. Without them we would lose a third of our calories. It's v v serious.

BornSicky · 03/07/2011 20:44

"If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man."

Albert Einstein.

Sad Grin at purple
purplepidjin · 03/07/2011 20:46

Bees transfer the boy bits of plants to the girl bits.

No more bees means flowers can't shag, which means we get no new flowers.

Or trees.

Or grass.

Which means lots of Carbon Dioxide, and no oxygen.

LostMyIdentityAlongTheWay · 03/07/2011 20:48

Oh, grrrr. I'm still following this and I'm still really annoyed.

I'm still calling her a silly cunt.

And Bella I get the typo about scarily. It's the calories one that's gotten me flummoxed HmmGrin

CQrrrneee · 03/07/2011 20:48

I think it's very cruel to do what she did.

AllieZ · 03/07/2011 20:50

YABU. Bees are a menace in your garden and as for honey, well, if it was a swarm that just appeared in her garden, was she morally obliged to harvest the honey, too?! Let the ecosystem and honey be taken care of by people who keep bees.

BulletWithAName · 03/07/2011 20:51

It it was a wasps nest, I'd applaud her. Hate the fuckers. But bees are a different kettle of fish- they're very useful. So YANBU.
