to have called an ambulance?

Just been out walking the dog, on our way home we saw a young girl (16-17) lying by the side of the park. No one else anywhere near her.

So I went over to see if she was ok, she wasn't able to focus, could barely hold her head up. So I asked if she'd taken anything, and when she nodded, I asked what. She told me she didn't know.

So I figured it was best to err on the side of caution and ran home (couple of doors away) to grab my phone and call an ambulance.

When I got back her "friends" had reappeared, and were very obviously not impressed at me calling the ambulance.

I feel like it was the right thing to do, but their reaction has made me doubt myself.

"Actually, the fact that they are teenagers is enough. Yabu to even ask the question."

I've never been so glad to be told I am BU! Grin

I just felt so out of my depth. Really hope the girl is ok.

Of course you did the right thing.

Bohica I have a a friend who is a paramedic and he actually has been called out to a house to find a bloke standing at the door with a scratched finger, with his wife in the house just sitting there watching the TV.

Have had to deal with many unconcious teens unfortunately and you can never be too careful. Its to easy to look at them and think drugs but it isnt always. You would never forgive yourself if you didnt call and something had happened.

And dont doubt yourself because her 'friends' who were nice enough to leave her by herself at night, sprawled out near a park. These are not people whose judgement your should concern yourself with.

Line I'm not suprised, I once attended a call beacuse the caller couldn't find her tv remote.

I hope it's different now but it was very frustrating at the time.

I would prefer to attend a what if call than a if you were sober would you really call obout your finger/nits call.

Of course you did the right thing. It makes me feel quite sad that this could be my daughter in years to come and hope to god someone like you would be there to do the right thing

LineRunner · 02/07/2011 23:53

I suppose because we all hear about these ambulance call-outs for utter shit (lost remotes, cut fingers), it makes decent people like the OP question themselves.

OP, you knew there could be a really serious problem with that girl. You were right to call for professional help.

I think 95% of the general public dial 999 for genuine "I don't know what to do but I hope you do" help

Dialling 999 doesn't guarantee an ambulance, there are other avenues to send the call down before an ambulance is sent.

I think it's best to call in a don't know situation as long as you are the most relient/sober person involved in the situation.

The person taking the call & sending/advising help can only rely on what the person on scene tells them so it really does help if that person is responsible.
