to not buy a wardrobe for 22 month old DS?

Sorry for the crashingly dull topic...

I need to replace his old changing table thing as it doesn't have enough storage for his clothes. I was just going to buy a big chest of drawers and have one drawer for vests, one for trousers etc. I thought this was a good idea as a good chest of drawers could be used in the house for years, as opposed to a kids wardrobe which we'd have to get rid of at some point. Mentioned this to the ILs and they were APPALLED! Apparently depriving a small child of hanging space is some sort of parenting crime Hmm

He doesn't wear suits or dresses. I don't iron everything before it's put away. I am bad at putting away clothes at the best of times and coat hangers drive me mad.

AIBU? Do children need a wardrobe?

That's what I thought!

It's a really good point about being able to reach their clothes - DD has a wardrobe and loves dressing herself but can't reach the rail (if there happens to be anything on it Blush).

The room's too small for a full size wardrobe so it would have to be a kids one which would then have to be got rid of at some point. There are fitted wardrobes in other rooms so we couldn't use it anywhere else either.

Two DSs - age 12 and 8, neither have ever had a wardrobe, I don't think they've missed it.

DS1's blazer, shirt, tie combo goes on a hanger on the back of the door.

My boys have a wardrobe each. aged 3 and 4

MoonGirl1981 · 02/07/2011 12:41

My son has a wardrobe for t-shirts/sweaters/jedi capes/batman costumes/etc and drawers for pants/socks/pajamas/jeans/etc.

Both were relatively cheap for IKEA and I have room for them.

That said, I don't think one is necessary and you're certainly not unreasonable for not buying him one. You'll probably get far more use out of a deep set of drawers.

Ignore the parents, do what you think is sensible!

msbuggywinkle · 02/07/2011 12:48

Nope, all of ours just have drawers. It means they can put away their own stuff and get their own things out more easily. Wardrobes are a pain to keep reasonably tidy (and we have closets anyway!).

He should start wearing dresses.

Two birds with one stone :o

Surely that's two stones and no bird!

No need for wardrobes for either of my sons (4 and 1). We have the IKEA storage unit with large square holes that you put fabric tubs in and 8 tubs house everything from pants to sunhats.

The two or three collared shirts they have are ironed and folded.

Ooh no- well, my materialist side is emerging now, OP will have an excuse to buy a wardrobe!

Hmm
