AIBU not to understand what this woman wanted??

I was serving on a till today and I had a customer that was chatting on her phone throughout the whole transaction. I don't really mind as i understand some people are in a rush and/or don't want to get off their phones when paying.

When the transaction finished she left (still on the phone) and bumped into a stack of shopping baskets ( they were not obstructing the walkway and were positioned where they always are) Her top got caught in one of the baskets and had a little fray at the hem.

She instantly got off her phone and demanded she wants to see a manager as she wants "something done about this"

I was still serving so i couldn't hear the entire conversation but a manager was called and she was demanding a refund for the top (it wasn't even bought in the same shop and was a completely different brand)

The manager later confirmed she was adamant it was the shop's fault and wanted some compensation or a refund.

AIBU to not understand how you could go to - say - next and ask them to refund you a top you bought in - say - monsoon??

I understand it would be a bit frustrating but i'd put it down to experience really.. but she kicked up a massive fuss about it..

what do you lot think?

i know it's not a very important matter but it just left me a bit baffled!

It wasn't me who was the waitress in that incident. She screamed take it away when told it was the fan she had requested . The waitress said I'll have a word with the chef who blew his top. SHhe came back and said that chef says that ice cream is required to be kept in the freezer and the usual effect is cold ice cream would you prefer a different dessert? That is when she chucked the ice cream over the poor girl. She was only 16, not been waitressing long, I was in my early 20s I felt so sorry for her. The waitress that is not the woman.

I used to work for a well known music examining board, and we had months of phone calls from an adult candidate who had failed their high level instrumental exam. This candidate wanted a free resit, a refund of travel costs to and from the examination centre (both times) and the exam date of their choice. There was nothing to suggest that they had failed through anything other than not being quite prepared enough, but the candidate was convinced that this couldn't have happened and that we were somehow to blame. The relevant dept offered all sorts of compromises, despite having no obligation to, but none were acceptable.

I used to love it when this person rang up, they were hysterical (in every sense).

That was a great job for twatty phonecalls actually, another favourite was the teacher who requested (and got) a specific date and time for their Grade 8 candidate (despite this not being usual practice), then rang demanding to change it nearer the time because they (the teacher) had been offered some touring work that they wanted to take up, meaning they wouldn't be able to accompany their pupil. When I said no, she accused me of ruining her pupil's career Grin

I was once on the customer service desk at tesco when a man brought back a whole pack of toilet rolls because the perforations didn't match up!!
Since then nothing surprises me..

After 15 years of nightclub management i will never be Shock at the rudeness some people are capable off.

I had a lass scream at me because i removed her from a club for calling a barman a retarded moronic twat for not remembering her personal drink of choice in a club of 1000+ people. She then had a hissy that i would not go and get her boyfriend from inside to bring her some socks as her feet were cold. He was playing drums on stage at the time (in some nobody band) Grin

I also had a customer make an official complaint about me because i refused lug a keg of cider up from the cellar to the bar when i was 7 months pregnant and he had to choose another drink. Or wait 10 mins for other staff.

It's really bad when toilet roll perforations don't match up, 'though! I'd not have the nerve to take it back, so good on that fella Grin.

The arrogance and gross stupidity if some people leaves me breathless. My brother used to work on the check in desk at a Spanish airport, sending home tourists, all of whom had flown there in the first place. He had a couple who shouted at him that they wanted to sit next to each other - fair enough - but that they both wanted window seats! WTF?
He said "fine" and checked them in cos he couldn't be arsed arguing with some people.

i think it depends on the basket. If basket was a hazard and had bits stuck out of it that could easily catch and rip clothing - then yes she does deserve a refund. There is of course a way to approach these things and she sounds like she was very very rude.

ScaredyDog · 02/07/2011 19:14

A lad working in a supermarket pushing one of those big cages pushed it into me and ripped a hole in my top once and scratched my arm (not badly, but I was pissed off about the top). Asked for the cost of a new top, you'd think I'd asked customer services for the world on a plate!

I had to go and buy a new top and take the receipt in to get the refund for it - they asked for the ripped top to be given to them too Hmm I told them no, whatever would they do with it but put it in the bin?

Yet the very rude woman in front of me at customer services was complaining that a bottle of fabric conditioner had leaked in her boot was given a £10 voucher and a grovelling apology? I shouldn't have been so nice about it, if I'd moaned more (particularly about the four inch scratch across the top of my arm!) maybe I'd have got a voucher too!

It sounds like the customer in the OP was horrendously rude and it was more than partly her own fault, but tbf the baskets shouldn't have sharp parts sticking out really that could damage clothing or scratch somebody. But it's her own fault really if she wasn't paying attention.
