usually a glass or two with dinner, and on Friday & Saturday usually three or four throughout the evening.... I really look forward to my wine time & thoroughly enjoy it but am worried it's a tad too much, aibu??

You are drinking a lot, IMO. I know I'm in the minority here though

kreecherlivesupstairs · 01/07/2011 18:00

That is quite worrying, the link to breast cancer I mean. I am currently being investigated for a slug in my right breast and have been known to cane it a bit.

JamieAgain · 01/07/2011 18:01

Oh dear kreecher. Hope it's not

Bast · 01/07/2011 18:02

You 'really look forward to your wine and thoroughly enjoy it'? -Fine!

The thought of an evening without it concerns you in any way? -Not fine!

Alcohol addiction is so very, very insidious. Be aware, remain in control and the day you can take but not leave it, is the day you are well into a problem.

Pre-empt that possibility and make sure that day doesn't come Smile

chicletteeth · 01/07/2011 18:03

Actually I stand corrected, it's convincing evidence rather than probably. For liver cancer, it's probable.

Also mouth/oesphageal/larynx cancers are also greatly increased in excessive drinkers.

fatlazymummy · 01/07/2011 18:17

You need to convert '1-2 glasses of wine per night 'into units of alcohol to get a true picture of your consumption. www.drinkaware.co.uk has some useful info.
I'm not quite sure why you would ask 'aibu' though. It's your health that is the issue.

DarlingDuck · 01/07/2011 18:31

I get through about 2 bottles a week. I'm not drinking tonight as sometimes I just don't feel like it and when I do it is usually just with dinner. I used to have 2 or 3 alcohol nights a week but it has crept up in the last month or so, will start the routine back up again though and it will give me something to look forward to on th enights I can have a drink. It's cava or prosecco I drink by the way if that makes any difference?

Can I just add I don't smoke, I excercise and eat very healthily and am not overweight so hopefully it will balance out Confused

JamieAgain, I think it's alot too, but being a teetotaller anything sounds like alot to me!!
Always shocked when I walk past peoples homes & their green recycling boxes are stacked with wine bottles.

DialsMavis · 01/07/2011 18:38

YABVU as at the moment I can't afford to drink every night and I am trying to lose the Mummy tummy too. I love wine so much...

2BoysTooLoud · 01/07/2011 18:42

DarlingDuck I'm always doing balancing acts in my head..
Drink wine = breast cancer risk/ breastfed kids for 10 months each etc..
Maybe not very scientific!!
I probably drink over 14 units a week.. but not much over.. oh I don't want to think about it.
La, la, la.....

chicletteeth · 01/07/2011 18:42

Most cancers as a rule are multifactorial, so it's usually not just one thing that causes it. However, regardless of the rest of your lifestyle, if you still drink excessively, your chances of breast cancer (amongst others are increased). Of course if you had late menarche, aren't that tall and breastfed your children, then these things are thought to have a protective effect. It's about a combination of things really and having a decent balance.

Either way, drinking every day is not recommended, if you were my patient and your drinking came up during a visit, I would tell you you drink too much and you should cut back and have at least three alcohol free days a week.

bibbitybobbityhat · 01/07/2011 18:42

You really should try to have two consecutive nights every week alcohol free. I heard a liver specialist say this on Radio 4 so it must be true!

chicletteeth · 01/07/2011 18:43

FWIW, I love love love wine - so I don't consider this good news. But the same way I view UV exposure as contributing to skin cancer, I view alcohol as contributing to other cancers so I limit my exposure to it.

medievalmum · 01/07/2011 18:52

WineI have had a bottle of wine a night for the last 5/6 years Wine just to be sociable with DH. I mentioned it to my doctor at my last check up and he didn`t think it was a problem yes I was honest!!! I also had a bit of a gall bladder problem last year and got a thorough ultrasound including my liver and they said everything was fine phew but I suppose it also depends on your body and how it works

AnonymousBird · 01/07/2011 18:58

medievalmum - you have your own whole bottle each night?! I'm absolutely NOT being judgey by the way, and am glad your body is ok, but god, what do you feel like every morning?!?!? I don't think I'd be able to move!

I don't drink any wine during the week now, but sometimes have a small stubby beer with my evening meal. Wine reserved for Fridays and Saturdays... partly so I don't feel rubbish for the busy weekdays, but also a cost thing. DH and i will probably share one bottle on those two nights.

chicletteeth · 01/07/2011 18:58

medieval your doctor is incompetent and is completely wrong and if he/she said that, I seriously question if 1) they heard you correctly 2) their training and if they are properly qualified.

That said, everybody is different, some people can smoke 60 a day and have clear lungs (my grandfather after 50 years smoking heavily) and others get ill on much less. If everything was fine, count yourself lucky. It's the exception, not the rule.

MrsGypsy · 01/07/2011 19:06

I think the fact that you're asking means little bells are ringing somewhere. If you want to be sensible, have two alcohol free nights per week. If you want to be really sensible, use slightly smaller glasses as well on your wino nights. (pats self on back).

I'm looking for a good prosecco - which one do you like? :)

Tchootnika · 01/07/2011 19:36

Yep, as per MrsG.

Also, though: try make sure you drink 1-2 glasses of water with every glass of wine. If you're blaizing through the wine without the water, stop (and have a think about starting to worry ditching the wine).

Iggly · 01/07/2011 19:44

Blimey seems a lot to me! Just because other people drink similar amounts, doesn't make it right.

You're asking the question which must mean you're a little worried.

Put the wine away for a week - if you can't give it up for that short period of time then time to have a think about why that is.

2BoysTooLoud · 01/07/2011 19:46

Medieval do you mean share a bottle with DH??
Won't get so much earache for that!!

DilysPrice · 01/07/2011 20:01

2 bottles a week is about 20 units, I think depending on the strength - more than is optimal, and a risk factor for breast cancer but not a huge health risk, I'd be thinking about slotting in one or two Perrier and herbal tea evenings if you wanted to be on the safe side.

Half a bottle a night (35 units per week) puts you at significant risk of a range of stuff but OTOH lots of women do drink that amount for decades and get away with it.

bubaluchy · 01/07/2011 20:14

Why do you need to drink it every day, are you able to relax and un -wind by other means?
