to not want to be subjected to the hard sell when I just want to withdraw some cash?

Went into a branch of my bank today to withdraw some money, as you do. Woman at counter brings up my account details and sees that I'm eligible for a new credit card, so asks if I want it. I say no thankyou, I already have one and I don't use it much. But she persists, telling me the benefits of the card. I politely decline again, saying my current credit limit is more than enough. She says 'but you must have to pay interest', I say no Confused, because I pay off the full balance every month. She still persists and I tell her I'm really not interested, thanks. She finally relents.

But bloody hell, can people not take no for an answer? I expect such cold-blooded hard selling from telemarketers, but when all I want is some cash out at the bank, AIBU to be a bit pissed off?

I used to work in a bank and believe me, we hate asking the questions as much as the customer hates hearing them. But we were told that if we didn't do it we would be hauled in to the manager to explain why. Thankfully I escaped and now have a job I love, but ever since I have been very sympathetic to all those in that unfortunate position, and to all cold callers as well, who must also be under tremendous pressure, and worn down by the abuse they have to put up with. After all, they are only trying to make a living. Better than choosing to be unemployed.

Been the teller and escaped! Grin
FYI (unless it's changed recently) if memory serves I think you can request a note be put onto your file to stop them asking you these questions.
Certainly I'm no longer asked them after I got really ratty with a summer temp and shouted a lot Blush

State your business and then say - politely but firmly - And that is all my business here today so please do not try to sell me any other service. And mean it.

Gallifrey, I know it is rough on them when they are under pressure but we are the customers and the customer is always right!

"those who invent these silly rules aren't the ones sitting behind the counter annoying customers and getting the flack!"

True. But with interest rates so low at the moment the margin on "normal" banking business is really, really squeezed. Institutions see the only way to make a decent profit is to try to cross-sell other products and services, hence these "silly rules"

SloganLogan · 01/07/2011 16:13

Cross-selling is fine. But trying to get customers to buy something they don't want or need is silly at best, unethical at worst. Regardless of interest rates.

eurochick · 01/07/2011 16:32

I answer with a very firm "not interested" and they don't persist.

ivykaty44 · 01/07/2011 16:44

I reply - I will ave a credit card as long as you never send me a bill - deal? with a grin

they never go any further - it sort of ends the sale and they shut up, but I haven't offened as really I just want to say f*ck off but its not their fault

Akandra · 01/07/2011 18:14

I am always very polite ... Apart from with the callers who call saying they are a 'helpdesk' and have had a report there is something wrong with my computer.

This lot are fakes. They are trying to sell you a product that might actually be spyware to solve a problem you don't have. They get a mouthful of abuse from me. I feel sorry for people who's job is to sell things but if you take a job selling fraudulent goods your as much of a scumbag as the person employing you.

I was getting a call a day at one point. They seem to have stopped.

I got this today, while in a bank queue with about 10 people behind me. Ridiculous. I deposited some cash and she decided to start harping on about account reviews and isas and asked me if I pay tax. I didnt know wtf she was on about so she disappeared to get me a few brochures whilst the crowd behind me got annoyed.

PenguinArmy · 01/07/2011 18:33

ladythumb did you get it cancelled for her?
