to think George Osborne swanning around in the Royal Box at Wimbledon is wrong?

George Osborne had prime seats in the Royal Box on Centre Court at Wimbledon yesterday, for the Federer/Tsonga match, and the Murray/Lopez match.

This REALLY annoys me. On the day when the Greeks were taking a critical decision, with riots in Athens, and implications for the whole world economy our hirsute Chancellor took the afternoon off.

On the day before hundreds of thousands of workers feel compelled to strike in protest at the prospect of a much grimmer future (whatever the rights or wrongs of that, this isn't a debate about strikes), our Chancellor took the afternoon off.

At a time when we are told ad nauseam that 'We are all in this together', the Chancellor took the afternoon off and went to the best seats at Wimbledon (incidentally, do they have to pay for those seats?).

MPs currently get very generous holidays. I don't suppose a teacher would be able to take the afternoon off to go to Wimbledon (in fact I have friends who have requested this and were given very short shrift). To those who say 'teachers get very good holidays and benefits, they knew about the fixed dates before they went into teaching' I would say 'MPs get very good holidays and benefits, they knew about the fixed dates before they went into politics'.

We pay the Chancellor's salary. I think he should be accountable.

how many times can you say 'weather' in one interview?

OP posts:
LilyBolero · 30/06/2011 16:51

He sounds like one of those robots who after a while of trotting out the same answer starts getting the preprogrammed responses muddled up, and will start shouting out WEATHER or BLOWN OFF COURSE at random moments.

YADNBU!!!

aliceliddell · 30/06/2011 16:54

You could remove the words 'swanning' to 'Wimbledon' and YAstillNBU.

headfairy · 30/06/2011 16:55

I haven't read the whole thread because I felt ill at the number of people who were happy to see that twit sitting in the Royal Box on such a crucial day... I'm with you op, but then I never did believe for one minute we were all in it together. The rich take care of their own.

LilyBolero · 30/06/2011 16:58

And I am childishly happy that if he tries to google pictures of himself at Wimbledon, by putting George Osborne and Wimbledon into google, this thread is #2 on the list.

I'm with you OP

I don't care about his wealth. I couldn't give a rat's arse about his watching tennis on the job or getting a Royal Box seat.

What I object to is that it's blatantly the wrong thing at the wrong time form someone who claims 'were all in this together'. His sense of judgement is appalling. Christ, even Cameron has made a point of showing conspicuous restraint.

headfairy · 30/06/2011 17:05

hahahah, he would do well to read some of the comments on here. Whatever you think of his policies it's bloody insulting to see him having such a lovely time doing something that is way beyond most people. And before anyone jumps on a says does he not deserve some downtime like the rest of us, I say (with only just a teensy bit of tongue in cheek) no, he doesn't deserve to have another fun day until he's out of government. It's a bloody serious job and deserves someone who's bloody serious ALL the time. So ner!

Chen23 · 30/06/2011 17:07

"And I am childishly happy that if he tries to google pictures of himself at Wimbledon, by putting George Osborne and Wimbledon into google, this thread is #2 on the list."

Grin

Can imagine he'd be slightly less happy to see that, altho I'm sure he's even less happy with the first google image result he'd get if he searched for his name and the worlds most popular cola drink / class a drug......

SunRaysthruClouds · 30/06/2011 17:12

Well that's us told then!

Lucky there is only another 4 years or so of seeing him 'governing' in all his glory, then if we are even luckier we will have that great bloke Ed Balls

Irksome · 30/06/2011 17:18

Googling 'george osborne cunt' yields plenty of results.

Chen23 · 30/06/2011 17:23

Just to be clear, distaste for Gideon does note equal support for Ed Balls.

I think I'd prefer Vince Cable but he's done a good job of burning his bridges with the coalition leadership

Armi · 30/06/2011 17:28

Did anyone else clock the Gov of the Bank of England was also jollying it up with Georgie-Porgie yesterday? Was it National 'We're in charge of finances but we don't give a fuck?' Day?

LilyBolero · 30/06/2011 17:29

Yes, was Mervyn King's second visit to the tournament I believe.

OP posts:
Armi · 30/06/2011 17:33

How nice for him.

LilyBolero · 30/06/2011 17:34

Btw, it is by invitation of the All England Club, not the Royals, therefore easy to turn down. And because it's by invitation he won't have had to pay.

OP posts:
aliceliddell · 30/06/2011 17:36

Greece is very nice at this time of year.

Armi · 30/06/2011 17:38

It's not really an issue for me about whether or not those two pay for themselves, it's just the whole business of them being there at all, exuding smugness and bonhomie. I could cheerfully have slapped the pair of them.

LilyBolero · 30/06/2011 17:41

yy Armi, the smugness is enough in itself.

The paying bit is only that 'we're all in this together' Osborne gets to go free (and have best seat), doesn't take annual leave or anything like that, whereas anyone else who goes has to either queue, or take their chances in the ballot, buy a ticket, and probably has to use a day of holiday. Just irritating really. But my real gripe is him being there at all when he SHOULD HAVE BEEN AT WORK and should just understand that it is grossly insensitive and crass.

greenrock · 30/06/2011 17:42

Just makes me sick.

JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleeene · 30/06/2011 17:53

I hate him so much. With my maths A-level, even I am better qualified to be chancellor. He's never even had a proper job.

Tory scum.

Indigojohn · 30/06/2011 21:13

Tory scum?

Nice.

Labour twat.

LostMyIdentityAlongTheWay · 30/06/2011 21:18

Yup. I find that twats usually do help in labour.

What is your point?

Indigojohn · 30/06/2011 22:01

So do cunts.

JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleeene · 30/06/2011 22:04

Mamazon is that you?
