To not understand 90% of what anyone is on about in the Health and Beauty section

And to also find it depressing that H&B gets way more threads/replies a day then anything in the news or politics sections. it's like the stereotypes are true, woman are all shallow.

I've never been hairdressers, I wear T-shirts and jeans, I buy skirts and shoes if I like them I have no idea about all the different types and the different names, I've no idea why anyone in their right mind would want to curl their eyelashes (those things look like torture tools to me).

It's all greek to me.

IIRC Ryoko you are really into video games IMO you can;t get more silly/shallow than that and I would say that I wouldn't understand 100% of "gamer" threads. However I wouldn't start a thread saying how silly they are!

Ryoko · 29/06/2011 19:53

Not hoping to change or challenge anything just find it depressing that people are more interested in the latest money hoover then whats going on in the world.

Frankly I think the fashion followers are those who are insecure, why feel the need to buy the latest trend, just get what you like, and wear what you got until it's warn out.

dexter73 · 29/06/2011 19:54

Why do you read all the posts in S&B if they are so shallow and uninteresting?

fayeso · 29/06/2011 20:00

I think s & b threads are fun....and a way of having a general chit chat about things that are perhaps not overly important to some but give others pleasure.....I am a 38 year old mum of 3 ....do not wear daily make up am not hell bent on how I dress but love s & b for a bit of light hearted banter between friends who I only know by Nickname!!!and sometimes rely on these 'friends ' for opinions etc etc so if you don't like dont look!!!!

Al0uiseG · 29/06/2011 20:00

Would you like me to redirect you to one of my cleverest posts??? :o

It was brilliant, my seminal moment and I'm very proud of it, it was about economics. Just to prove that I'm only 75% shallow.

islanzadi · 29/06/2011 20:02

Sorry but you sound narrow-minded.
Not sure if you're taking the mick or you actually don't know what the adjective "maxi" means.

CaptainBizarro · 29/06/2011 20:04

How do you know people are more interested in fashion than anything else? Confused

Have you tracked every person who posts in S&B's movements?

I never knew there was a Style and Beauty thread, possibly too thick to find it. But now I have. THANK YOU OP.

Been reading it avidly for the last few minutes. Picked up loads of great info and don't feel remotely bad/stupid for it.

DilysPrice · 29/06/2011 20:35

But I don't come onto MN to talk about monetary policy. I have many other (male dominated) fora to discuss that on (and I do). Presumably you discuss games largely on the Guardian gamesblog or wherever - I've never seen computer games discussed on here from a players POV, but that's not because no MNers ever play, it's because this is not where you go to discuss it.

This is a female, mother orientated forum and it is where I come to discuss things I wouldn't necessarily get to talk about in mixed company, like feminism, parenting, schools, relationships and clothes, make up etc.

Shred, Btw is a lesbian exercise video. HTH.

notyummy · 29/06/2011 20:42

Dilys- are they all gay?

DilysPrice · 29/06/2011 20:49

JM is apparently, and once you've heard that her flirtation with her girls takes on a different complexion (not bad, just slightly distracting).

Birdsgottafly · 29/06/2011 20:49

Op- i have started posting in S&B for light relief to my day. I give advice sometimes having had fillers and botox (yes i am that shallow). I don't read the political stuff on here because i am very polilitically active in RL. I have a very stressful (but one i love) job and treat MN as my relax time when i am stuck indoors and not walking my dog or camping. Alot of my work collegues watch really rubbish TV, we all unwind differently.

I can 'rough it' with the best of them but also give anyone a run for their money, appearance wise, on a night out. I also have a dress and appearance code for work that i have to follow.
Work on your judgementalness and closmindedness.

CaptainBizarro · 29/06/2011 20:51

Grin @ HopeForTheBest.

If people who came onto MN were only allowed to post in one forum, and the vast majority chose to post only in S&B, then maybe I'd see your point re being obsessed with one frippery-ish thing above all else...

But in their wisdom, the powers that be at MNHQ have decreed that we're allowed into many different fora to express our views. So all the heavy amount of traffic in S&B shows is that it's a popular forum. Like AIBU, chat, and, um, whichever other ones are popular. TV and sleb gossip, did you say? I don't go into those.

Having an interest in fashion and beauty as well as other more weighty subjects is not mutually exclusive, which is where my - perhaps very unfair - accusation of insecurity came in, since a lot people (Mums included Shock Grin) manage to encapsulate many different facets into their lives without too much stress. Apologies if I was off the mark there.

islanzadi · 29/06/2011 20:54

Is this a wind-up, OP? If not, why are you genuinely posting on S&B? ..

chocolatchaud · 29/06/2011 20:55

There'll be no-one around on S&B tonight - they're all busy on the Boden sale Wink

FellatioNelson · 29/06/2011 20:58

I'm SO glad some of you mentioned the baby bathing and the Playstation gaming - you saved me the bother.

What a hoot: 'It's all capitalist rubbish designed the make people buy things they don't need every few months'.

Yep, you said it.

tulpe · 29/06/2011 20:59

OP, YABU to suggest that having an interest in style and one's appearance is shallow. IMO, there are women who put as much effort into "not making an effort" with their hemp clothing and "extra layer for warmth" leg hair, as those who openly admit to enjoying and being interested in style (and I speak advisedly as I was once such a woman in my student days. In fact, I probably spent longer coaxing my hair into dreds than I ever do styling it now Hmm

YABU to suggest that women who have such interests have no other interests in life either. Alongside many of my other S&B regular MNers, I have a multitude of other interests. HOwever, MN is a place I come to escape rather than always to debate.

You say: "Frankly I think the fashion followers are those who are insecure, why feel the need to buy the latest trend, just get what you like, and wear what you got until it's warn out."

You see, there I agree - "fashion followers" may well be insecure, flitting from one trend to another. However the board title is "Style" and Beauty. And as anyone who is stylish knows, style is very different from fashion and is not such a fickle friend Wink

WhatsWrongWithYou · 29/06/2011 21:06

Tulpe's post is great. Here's mine: jog on, div.

BulletWithAName · 29/06/2011 21:09

Yawn. Yes, I'm totally shallow because I care about what I look like and like clothes and make up. Of course, it's all I'm interested in. Hmm

NorthernGobshite · 29/06/2011 21:11

Another Op who purports to be morally superior Yaaawwwnn.

TattyDevine · 29/06/2011 21:27

Its only a small handful of people on the Style and Beauty forum who don't own and don't approve (!) of linen trousers. I know it seems like its the whole board, but that thread was fairly heavily littered with "what, really? But what the fuck else is there" posts of dismay and no doubt 30 bazillion more potential posts that never got posted because the shamed linen-wearers just didn't dare admit they wear linen trousers (shock, horror!) in summer.

Take 10,000 women randomly selected from the population of the UK, put them in a room, do a quick survey, and there will be 15 or so that hate linen trousers and feel they are not chic and never will be. That's the style and beauty forum, basically.

I have some linen trousers. I wore them yesterday. They were comfortable. They didn't look terribly bad. Perhaps I wasn't stylish. But the road-resealing bloke whilstled me on the school run. So I don't really give a shiny.

As for the rest of it. Great for you not going to the hairdresser. There are a lot of posts on S&B talking about home hair colouring. They just want to get it right and not waste money. That's not terribly shallow really.

Keeping fit (30 day shred) is not a dreadfully shallow thing either is it? Being buff fit strong and healthy for our husbands and love interests children?

I could go on but really there is no need to justify it. I'm not going to rip apart your lifestyle or interests either my love. You just carry on, if you are happy that's great. You are happy, aren't you?

I could go on and on but I don't need to justify my or anyone else's presence on there.

Goblinchild · 29/06/2011 21:31

There's a H&B section? I must have hidden it so long ago that it has passed into mythology in my mind.
