to be completely baffled as to why people care about spelling mistakes

Title says it all.It is totally beyond me why anyone cares about other people's spelling mistakes.
Why do they care? What does it say about that person?

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 30/06/2011 11:41

But the OP was asking if it is BU to be baffled why people care about spelling mistakes - there was nothing about BU if you correct people.

YABU if you correct people - it's done as a way of being patronising and trying to take the moral highground.

YANBU to care about people's spelling mistakes

I just hate the way an incorrectly spelled word looks and it stands out like a huge spot to me. I guess we all have our ocds to an extent and that's one of mine.

To give an equivalent example, imagine having an otherwise clean, cream carpet with an ink splat in the middle of it. That's all you would be able to see and it would drive you mad.

scottishmummy · 30/06/2011 19:30

all this well it matters in work and real life so it matters on mn is a moot point
mn isnt work nor is it real life.so the same demands and standards dont apply.mn is online bibble babble and doesnt require complete accuracy

whilst some of you may have a preference for good selling etc.it is only an individual preference and not enforceable or adhered to by majority.so as much as some people bump gums and harrumph- face it no one is bothered

and all these comparisons well if a cv were submitted with mistakes, thats tedious and inappropriate comparison.mn isnt a formal submission.its strangers blethering on line.as i said my mn composition bears no relation to rl or work.and thats the point

CurlyBoy · 30/06/2011 21:00

I know I said I would ignore you but I couldn't resist scottishmummy.

"it is only an individual preference and not enforceable or adhered to by majority.so as much as some people bump gums and harrumph- face it no one is bothered"

I think the responses in this thread proves that good spelling and grammar are not only adhered to by the majority but that the majority are bothered. It also shows that the majority have the good grace not to mention it to the poster.

The bottom line is that threads with bad spelling and grammar and lack of capitals and punctuation are at best difficult to read. In chat the only way you have to present yourself is through your words. Poor presentation leaves a poor impression and what you are trying to say will be disregarded. Period.

scottishmummy · 30/06/2011 21:11

lol,you want to tell me your ignoring me.how deliciously bizzare

Im too lazy too be bothered about academic level spelling on a forum that employs the use of smilieys.

However, people have 'picked' on me for it and its funny how people only pick up on my tragic typing skills when we are in disagreement! They couldn't give a shiney one before that.

I never bother to pick up on mistakes as it seems a bit last resort when you know your losing the argument.

The ONLY mistake I ever really wanted to pick on was when someone wrote ;

"but aren't we all just human beans?"

But not to be nasty, just because it was so adorable!

People have kids to look after and in between when they get 5 minutes they pop on mn. I dont think checking grammer and spelling are that important on tinternet tbh. I am not very well educated and sometimes struggle with spelling. Realistically it would mean i would have to preview every post to make sure it is correct before i post and tbh i cant be arsed or have time.

LRDTheFeministNutcase · 30/06/2011 23:26

I'm surprised someone suggested it'd be ok if dyslexics just used a spellchecker ... how stupid are you?! If you can't spell well enough for the word to be recognizable, how do you imagine a man-made device will work out what you were hoping to say? Hmm

Darn, I managed not to click on this thread for ages, too ... Grin

Those of you who think you can judge a person's education level by spelling or typing: no, no you can't.

saythatagain · 01/07/2011 06:13

I drive past a cafe everyday - it's called Deniece,s Cafe. 'Tis a splendid example of "didn't anyone check first"? But, it makes my smile and I'm sure they don't give a hoot!

Gooseberrybushes · 01/07/2011 07:05

If you can spell you don't need to "check" your spelling on a forum. You don't need to take time, or be academic about it. You can just spell. You don't even think about it. It's not about being arsed, it's about knowing how to spell. If you spell consistently badly here, you probably "can't spell" generally.

TrilllianAstra · 01/07/2011 08:48

Deniece,s Cafe - is it opposite Denephew,s drycleaners? :o

I agree with Gooseberry - apart from typos it would be harder for me to type the wrong word (there instead of their) or spell a word wrongly because I know what word I want to use and how to spell it.

I also agree with LRD that "dyslexics use a spellchecker" is a silly thing to say. However the presence of people with dyslexia is a reason for everyone else to make more of an effort with their spelling, not less. If dyslexics find reading words difficult in the first place then think how difficult they must find it if the word is not written correctly? (this is also a big part of the argument against txtspk, alongside the "blind MNers using a screenreader" which also doesn't work so well if everyone's spelling is poor)

LRDTheFeministNutcase · 01/07/2011 12:28

Mmm .... I actually find it quite easy reading misspellings, so do all the dyslexics I know .... perks of the situation, I guess.

I don't think 'good spelling' is as simple as you say, gooseberry. My spelling is actually pretty ok if I concentrate really hard. But I certainly can't be arsed to do that on here. I was really careful when I first came on - it made me much slower to post and I enjoyed it less, so I stopped worrying. This post is correctly spelt, but I can pull some shockers out of the bag if I'm knackered.

I would say I keep good spelling for when it matters, but actually I'm not sure it ever really matters - just snobbery.
