I probably need something else to concentrate on but this issue is really getting to me!

Why do people find it so bloody difficult to spell the smallest of words, a few examples for you;

Ware (in the context of clothes) - wear
Carnt - can't
Get - git

Another thing is people saying things that make no fucking sense! For example;

'Can you borrow me some money?' No I fucking can't you illiterate twat however I can lend you some!

Please people think about these things, or buy a blackberry or iphone which highlights the errors you have made. Thank you.

euphrosyne · 29/06/2011 17:20

usualsuspect · 29/06/2011 17:24

I couldn't give a fuck tbh

Its a bloody chat forum ,jeez

Pagwatch · 29/06/2011 17:28

I make spelling mistakes. But I am reasonably nice and try not to be superior.

I am happy that it is that way around

NoCarbsBeforeMarbs · 29/06/2011 17:55

I've only recently noticed that I've been spelling 'definitely' wrong.

I'm not much of a twat, but I did leave school at 14.

I think I'd rather read a polite thread by someone with poor spelling, than an offensive one with no mistakes though.

"Please people think about these things, or buy a blackberry or iphone which highlights the errors you have made. Thank you"
Hmm

If I ever offend with my spelling, happy to accept donations of such items...

Something is wrong with mumsnet on my mobile, it keeps posting things twice.

I am not just saying about the spelling on here, I am on about facebook and texts I receive. In fact I will post a status update from someone I know later to show you what I am up against.

If you're feeling it's something you're up against hellospoon, and it's not life threatening or affects your everyday life, I would try to unclench or you'll give yourself something chronic.

usualsuspect · 29/06/2011 19:12

Maybe you should give the internet a break for a while if it upsets you so much

proudfoot · 29/06/2011 19:55

OP, your comma splicing really bothers me!

"sorry it bothers you, its actually quite mild compared to most people on here."

The above ^ made me physically cringe at your "minor yet avoidable" comma mistake.

mousesma · 29/06/2011 20:19

NoCarbs definitely is a tricky one but I will always remember how to spell it after a humilating experience I had at 11 years old when I misspelt it in a book report and my headmistress pulled me out in front of the class and made me write it out over and over again on the blackboard to make sure I never forgot it again.

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 29/06/2011 20:38

Just made a spectacular cock-up in haste to respond on another thread. Put an 'h' before 'at' Blush.

How can I convince all assembled that I have never, ever, pronounced an 'aitch' at the beginning of a word where no 'h' exists . What 'h'actually 'h'appened was that I typed 'that' instead of 'at', erased the 't' and overlooked the sodding 'h' - 'onest, guv .

I agree with you in principle but I'm not convinced that Krispy Kremes would taste the same if they were Crispy Creams/Cremes 5Foot5, and Krusty the Clown in The Simpsons would be considerably diminished if his name began with a C.

NoCarbsBeforeMarbs · 29/06/2011 21:16

mousema, that sounds awful- effective though! Grin

icooksocks · 29/06/2011 21:21

YABU, my keyboard ison its wy out and sometimes misses letters off-I usually prrof read butit can make me look like an illiterate twat.

icooksocks · 29/06/2011 21:22

knobbysEx · 29/06/2011 21:23

knobbysEx · 29/06/2011 21:26

CaptainBizarro · 29/06/2011 21:34

You're not seriously suggesting people buy an iPhone in order to correct their spelling, are you?!

Have you seen how apostrophe-happy the person 'in charge' of ahem, 'grammar' Grin is at Apple?

I have to proof read everything I write nowadays because apostrophes get added into every bloody word... Hmm And I'm worried that judgypants like you might think it was intentional. Friends becomes friend's. Ones becomes one's. Its becomes it's. Its is a word!! Were becomes we're. Were is a word!!!!

Do you actually use an iPhone or iPad? Because if you do, and you're seriously as pissed off with bad spelling and grammar as you say you are, then the last thing you'd be doing is recommending an iPhone to help correct matters. Grin

Seriously - unclench. I agree that bad spelling and grammar is unforgivable on professional documents, books, magazines, newspapers and signage - and that text speak is never acceptable [snoot emoticon] - but on forums like this one you really have to let it go.

hellospoon · 29/06/2011 21:57

captain your post just made me lol laugh out loud, your iphone mini meltdown goes to show just how frustrating it all is!

I take back the iphone comment, however I have a blackberry and it is fantastic!

Mild? Hardly. The only thing wrong with your mobile phone, OP, is that it posts once, never mind twice. Confused

A1980 · 29/06/2011 22:11

It has probably already been pointed out but I do not have time to read the whole thread.

If you are going to rant about others poor literacy or inability to type, first make sure that you never fall victim to it yourself.

its actually quite mild compared to most people on here. It think you meant it is. How mortifying for you.

I am literate, I can spell but I am a lousy typist. So mistakes frequently happen. I don't have time or see the point in proof reading for a chat website. Who the cares, I'm not at work.

Get a life and some typing or grammar / punctuation lessons so that you'll understand the difference between its and it's "you illiterate twat" just kidding Grin

CaptainBizarro · 29/06/2011 22:17

I'm glad you took my post in the spirit it was intended. Grin

To be honest, I totally sympathise - BUT - I also acknowledge that while I might have a good grasp of spelling and grammar (and while I do think bad spelling does detract from what someone is trying to say, whether they like it or not), it's far from perfect and so I'd never open myself up to criticism by criticising others.

It's also worth bearing in mind that it's such an easy thing to judge people on, since as we're all communicating via the written word it's there for all to see. But just because someone is a bit crap in the spelling department, doesn't necessarily mean they're not a mathematical genius, a rocket scientist, an amazing cook maybe, or even just a really warm-hearted person who gives great advice.

I think you have to look at the bigger picture!

sundayrose10 · 29/06/2011 23:46

Oh the shame.

Inertia · 29/06/2011 23:53

Where I live, 'get' is local dialect (possibly general northern England dialect) for 'git', as in 'spawny get'. It's not a spelling error.
