To think 'pratting around' is not swearing?

MarioandLuigi · 27/06/2011 19:17

DH told me off earlier when I said to DS he was 'Pratting around with his dinner'. We have a swear jar and he now I thinks I should put 50p in it.

Its not swearing is it?

Probably an area thing.

I don't see it as swearing, but at the same time I wouldn't want my kids using the word.

So I conclude it's more an 'adult' word than a 'swear' word.

How does 25p in the jar sound? Grin

GypsyMoth · 27/06/2011 19:20

Untill recently I didn't know the word 'twat' was a swear word!!!

We seemed to use It as kids

pointythings · 27/06/2011 19:21

Not swearing. Make your DH put in 50 for false arrest Smile

PeppermintPanda · 27/06/2011 19:22

Fine to me, although I might wince a little if my 5yo said it.

I think you need to put up a laminated list next to the swear jar along with the price for each particular word, so as to avid this sort of convusiomn in future:

Prat - 25p
Plonker - 30p
Arse - 50p
Bollocks - 50p
Shit - 75p
Fuck - £1

AuntiePickleBottom · 27/06/2011 19:23

yanbu, i wouldn't class pratting around as a swear word

PeppermintPanda · 27/06/2011 19:24

*avoid
*confusion

ahem, sorry.

Rockerchic · 27/06/2011 19:24

I wouldn't class it as a swear word, and I also know someone with the surname of Pratt!

kaid100 · 27/06/2011 19:24

Prat actually means bottom.

I'm not sure about the laminated swear list by the jar, if I saw it as a 5 year old I'd have been tempted to pick it up read it out loud, especially since I wouldn't have known what the words meant.

CrapBag · 27/06/2011 19:25

YABU, not something I would say to my DS (3.5) and definitely not something I want him saying.

Ok its not the worse thing you can say but try to think if he repeats it after, you can't really tell him off for it.

worraliberty · 27/06/2011 19:25

Peppermint I don't think a shit should be more expensive than a Bollocks Shock

PeppermintPanda · 27/06/2011 19:25

Er, I was joking, Kaid :)

DurhamDurham · 27/06/2011 19:25

In from NE and was very shocked when I moved to London to hear the liberal use of the word 'twat'. In the NE that's the same as saying the C-word and worse then the F-word!!

CrapBag · 27/06/2011 19:26

I like Perpermints idea of different prices for different words. Smile

seeker · 27/06/2011 19:26

Not swaring , but, as ds used to say "Not suitable a me!"

Awomancalledhorse · 27/06/2011 19:26

Call him a berk (Dh, not DS!) and see what he thinks!
If he doesn't think berk is worthy of 50p, neither should pratting around.

Our My swear jar is just for cunt, fuck, motherfucker, fuckbucket & shit, think I'd be owed a swear jar rebate if I said prat Grin.

MarioandLuigi · 27/06/2011 21:05

DS is nearly 11 and I wouldnt mind him saying it, which is my swearword benchmark :o.

Im not paying the fine. DH is only trying to catch me out as he has paid in way more than me, and its being collected soon.

OP posts:
peeriebear · 27/06/2011 21:07

a small child calling somebody a prat would probably get something said for rudeness, but using it as a verb is not swearing!

MarioandLuigi · 27/06/2011 21:12

yy - like I say fannying about when he isnt getting ready for school, but I wouldnt call anyone a fanny.

OP posts:
alliwant · 27/06/2011 21:15

I say fannying about too, its harmless enough I reckon

PerAr6ua · 27/06/2011 21:17

I've been using 'pratting' a lot lately. Also prannying. All to avoid 'fartarseing' which is obviously the verb required...

alliwant · 27/06/2011 21:22

oooops I have said fartarsing too....... Need to curb my flippant tounge! I never say serious swear words but those two do slip out.... Need some code words, I do say PIA for pain in the arse Grin

whydobirdssuddenlyappear · 27/06/2011 21:28

Isn't berk actually rhyming slang? From Berkeley Hunt? So it's actually v rude - a fact which would probably horrify my mum, who spent years using it as a 'safe' expletive when we were around...

mumnotmachine · 27/06/2011 22:01

LOL- I say fartarsing as well!!

alliwant · 28/06/2011 13:11

Ha ha ha,

i'll call more people a berk now when I want to be rude on the sly Grin

KirstyJC · 28/06/2011 13:15

Ooh, I haven't fartarsed for ages! I'll start using that again!

And I agree, pratting isn't swearing at all.
