To wonder if you would consider an (average sized and healthy) 8 year old to be a "small child"?

I have an acquaintance who has one 8 year old DS. She often talks about life with a small child/refers to him as a small boy/says other things that would be more usual coming from the parent of a 3yo.

It doesn't bother me, but I would never have thought of an 8yo as a small child.

She is otherwise lovely and this is not my biggest issue in life. I'm also perfectly willing to be told that he is, in fact, tiny.

It is relative isn't it.

Dd is my teeny child although she is nearly nine because her brothers are 18 and 6ft tall and 14 and bigger than me.

pointydog · 27/06/2011 17:44

How old are your children, daisy?

DaisyLovesMetronidazole · 27/06/2011 17:45

It's all in the thread, pointy! :)

Ah, yes, seen it. Compared to your kids, 8 is big. SO I see where you're ocming from.

Pagwatch · 27/06/2011 17:49

Fucking nora pointy - read the thread.

Have you not been paying attention? There will be a small prize at the end for anyone who

A) can remember all the salient points
B) answer questions thoughtfully
C) give a toss

I am disappointed in you frankly

DaisyLovesMetronidazole · 27/06/2011 17:49

Yes, but I said later that I only consider my youngest to be small, and I'm not even sure that that's because she is the youngest and probably more because she is under 4/5.

BUT I may just be being weird and I am happy to accept that. Grin

I got with the beat pretty damn quick though, didn't I. Less than 2 minuites to find relevant points. A good recovery, I thought.

pointydog · 27/06/2011 17:52

And I saw the point re only one of them being considered small. I thought I'd covered that too in my succinct reply Wink

Yes well done.

I will find a small prize

pranma · 27/06/2011 17:54

well I would say an 8 yr old was 'a little boy' but not much beyond 8-by 9/10 I'd think child not small child

The prize can be tiny by anyone's standards. I love prizes.

PaisleyLeaf · 27/06/2011 18:27

I described the new family who moved in near us as having a 'little boy'

  • looks about 7-8 to me.
DaisyLovesMetronidazole · 27/06/2011 18:34

Actually, I may refer to an 8 yo as a little boy/girl, but more because I would see that a synonymous with "child" and see "small" preceding "child" as a particularly small child.

At this stage, I accept that my viewpoint is probably less usual than that of my friend!

DaisyLovesMetronidazole · 27/06/2011 18:43

Sorry, that AS synonymous!
