To be thinking of how to help my 6 year old son lose weight?

He's always been chubby/stocky but he's starting to look quite fat now....i don't want to make it an issue but when i try to cut back on what he consumes/make healthier food swaps etc...he moans and whines...i think he needs to be told that he is eating too much....but is this wrong?? don't want him to have low self esteem or poor body image.

As none of the responses on here are from Health Professionals who have seen your DS, I'd be very careful about taking advice from them.

There are conditions that can cause children to have little or no control over what they are eating. He may have a metabolic condition such as Diabetes or a Thyrpoid condition.

Your first point of call should be your GP or School Nurse...not unqualified strangers on an internet forum (however well meaning they may be).

I second that

Nanny0gg · 26/06/2011 19:48

What jugglingmug said.
Alarm bells rang for me when you told us how he eats as that sounds more than just poor table manners.
Until you can get an appointment it would be worth making sure that you keep foods/drinks as healthy as you can.
But see if you can get him to slow down; to actually chew his food and taste it. Full-up messages may not be getting to his brain as they should.

If he had a metabolic condition like diabetes he would have other symptoms eg weight loss. For peace of mind though speak to your Gp.

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/06/2011 20:34

No, just when I can be arsed. I've been doing it randomly for months.

Anyone who wants to join me on my spring cleaning crusade is more than welcome!

pointythings · 26/06/2011 20:38

You can't spring clean anymore, it's summer. You're supposed to leave everything to pile up whilst you worship the sun, until autumn starts again. Grin

Pumpernickelcuntychops · 26/06/2011 20:46

pointy as a point but as summer is coming and 6 weeks holiday approachs god help us on here :(

pointythings · 26/06/2011 21:16

Summer holidays? What summer holidays?

OK, so as a gold-plated and diamond-encrusted public sector worker I will be taking about half the summer holidays off as leave, but will be going away to Devon for a fortnight, spending the last day doing stuff at home with the DCs and having my auntie to stay (she is lovely but I'd rather chat with her and do fun things with the kids than do housework) and we are farming the kids out to my parents for 2 weeks, during which DH and I will be working as usual, eating all the foods the DCs don't like, going to the cinema, having loud kinky sex and generally not having any time for, or interest in, cleaning of any kind.

We've hijacked the thread, will stop it now.

OP, I would agree with the posters who have suggested improving the whole family's diet and increasing exercise so that he can grow into his weight, as it were - but if he continues to get really big I'd go and see your GP. And sorry for the hijack.

jugglingmug · 26/06/2011 21:41

pointy no need to show off about the loud kinky sex...if that's what was involved in my summer holidays I'd be looking forward to them a bit more Grin

pointythings · 26/06/2011 21:43

Sorry, juggling. It's just that it's been 10 years a few years.
