To not offer to have the cat for the day?

DP and I do not live together and he is in a house where he's not supposed to have pets. They're not allowed. He refused to get rid of the cat though and always said when an inspection comes up, he'll just chuck it outside and hide all its stuff Hmm.

Anyway his first inspection is this wednesday, he'll be at work. His worry is that he chucks the cat out before he goes to work and when the inspectors go into the house, the cat runs in making it obvious it lives there!!

His first solution was to take it to work with him!! he works in a supermarket so this means the cat would be left in the car all day. I said he can't do that, as much as I hate the little fuckers, you can't risk it dying in a hot car like that.

He never actually asked me, but I think he's hoping I'll offer to have the cat here for the day. AIBU to refuse? I REALLY do not like cats, I have all new furniture here and I'll be out wednesday meaning the cat will be left to its own devices in my house.
AIBU?

Mumsnet made me paranoid that our house smelt of cat when we had one. But we don't anymore and I can honestly say that I never smell cat in other people's homes! (buying a house ATM so have been in lots of houses recently) You must all have an amazing sense of smell! Confused

Panzee · 26/06/2011 17:38

Countess I can't actually smell cat but I'm allergic, so my eyes would water and my chest would get tight.

FabbyChic · 26/06/2011 17:39

Cats always have fleas.

As do most dogs, it doesnt mean they are dirty.

Cant you lock it in your kitchen?

longjane · 26/06/2011 18:18

I never known a house smell of cat
been in a few homes and have been surprised when a cat appeared.

dogs yes

cat hair may show up though.

While I don't think YABU, I can't help but think you have a very sad attitude towards the poor cat. But then I'm an animal lover, so I suppose that sort of clouds my judgement.

Don't offer to have the cat if you don't want to. I really do feel sorry for the poor mite though.

HerHissyness · 26/06/2011 18:32

I check people in and out of properties for a living.

i can always tell if a pet has been there. It's not rocket science.

All of our tenants have to have the carpets cleaned and treated when they leave. Fleas eggs can lie dormant in carpets for up to 2 years before hatching and finding a source of blood.

I think landlords are entitled to refuse pets. DC is unfair, unless it's a property that is really child unfriendly.

I like animals, but they do smell, and they do make a mess.

Lorenz · 26/06/2011 19:57

eww don't want it in the kitchen! disgusting paws all over the sides etc, no thanks! If it stayed with me it would be stuck in the cat carrier all day and that really isn't fair.

No he's just going to have to sort it out himself. I don't mean to be a bitch but - meh!

Dogs smell. Cats don't. Not all cats have fleas. Mine don't! If I put the bowls away you would not know that a cat lives here. I hoover up any hairs daily. Maybe your friends have stinky cats.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 26/06/2011 21:19

Yes they do. My SIL is a clean freak but you can still smell the clean, short haired cats. You have cats so you can't smell it. You're desensitised to the smell!

glassescase · 26/06/2011 21:33

bollocks

GwendolineMaryLacey · 26/06/2011 21:36

You so know it's true Wink

glassescase · 26/06/2011 21:44

You so know it's not! Visitors to my house are sometimes shocked when a cat appears. Dogs are a different matter, however; they DO smell :)

ScaredyDog · 26/06/2011 21:56

Most cats don't have fleas! I've only ever met one with fleas anyway, and I'm allergic to fleabites.

As for cats smelling (and I'll be honest, I'm not a cat fan) I've never noticed the smell of cat in anyone's home unless it's piddled somewhere or the person is a dirty bugger who doesn't empty litter trays. My mum has three and you wouldn't know they lived there other than for their bowls, and I only go down there a few times a year so I'm not "desensitised to the smell".

OP, I think it's pretty sad that you won't help your DP out. I'm not a cat lover myself (I'm allergic, but a lot better than I used to be as my best friend had two) but surely one day, even in your kitchen, wouldn't hurt? It would take a few minutes just to wipe down your surfaces if you're worried about it walking about?

Afraid it doesn't sound like your DP has his cat's best interests at heart anyway - keeping it in the car all day?! It would die!

Oh, and unless he's in receipt of council tax benefit or housing benefit, the PDSA won't help if the cat gets ill.

MadYoungCatLady · 26/06/2011 22:36

I'm worrying about the cat now. Send it my way, I'll look after it for a day!!!
