to try to find a magazine for girls that's not all pink lip gloss.

DS loves his Beano but DD (6) would like a magazine too, she would pick anything with free plastic stuck to the front. But I wish there was something with broader appeal, maybe with science, nature, easy cooking, craft etc. She's a bit past Charlie and Lola and defintely past the CBeebies one.

What would you like to see in a girls ( or unisex magazine) for 5-7 yr olds?

Yes, we had National Geographic for DS for a bit, but after a while he wanted something with a bit more variation. I like the look of the Okido ones so I have ordred a set of back issues, it will be interesting to see how well they get received. They look interesting, but maybe appeal a bit too much to funky parents....? Will report back!

Pre - DC I used to be a graphic designer so I'm wondering if this is a possibility to develop. I would love any feedback and ideas....

Things about nature and science that went into a lot of detail, or history.
Recommendations for things- music (not just modern stuff- from the C20th).
Articles about places around the world.
Pages of pictures and art that you could cut out and make into collages.
That would be an amazing magazine.

Oh and I used to get Okapi- that kind of thing, and the Pomme D'Api one when I was little.

My grandparents also have a whole stack of teens' mags from the 60s/70s and they're lots of fun to read. They talk about school, nature, DIY projects, music- hardly anything about fashion or makeup.

My DD 9 loves Jacqueline Wilson Mag & National Geographic kids.
She also enjoys her RSPB Bird Life.

It's hard finding a magazine that is aimed at the 6-10 age for girls that isn't all make-up & glitter.

Some great ideas quirrelquarrel. I'll add them to my list and get thinking... I suppose it would be good to put some pages together and take them into schools to see what the reaction is.....

I used to love Quiz Kids: www.puzzler.com/magazines/QuizKids.htm

If you sign them up to the RSPB you get the wildlife explorers mag which is very good. In fact if you join as a family DDebit £3 a month I think you'll get the kids mag and the adult mag Birds which is also very good. Also free entry to RSPB reserves and some cool free gifts for joining.

I know it's not a magzine, but I cannot recommend First News highly enough.

Okido is good. A friend who works in a bookshop sent me one for ds [4] and he loves it. I have had to read the robot issue MANY TIMES.

DD [9] quite likes it but she prefers Anorak. It's a bit older. They used to sell it in Borders but I have to order that online too since they closed. Haven't seen it in any other shops.
