Got home today and dd aged 6 in y1 had a letter in her bag from Ht (it's one of them standard tick box ones so not personalised as such) saying 'dd did not take part in pe today as she had forgotten her plimsols. Please ensure child has correct pe kit blah blah. I sent her kit back with plimsols all with her name on after half term and they keep them on their pegs until the end of term. So she hasn't forgotten them more like lost them in school. They only wear them for PE so I'm sure they're stuck in someone elses bag. She lost her fleece before half term and I've been in to check the lost property a couple of times but unsuprisingly it's not appeared. She's got her sports day next week so I've got to fart around trying to get her a new pair or she can't take part and I just know every damn shop will have every size but hers. I'm so tempted to ask to go in after school on Monday and check every PE bag. I also want to ask if they could get all the children to check the names in their fleeces as someone is walking around in her fleece. I've told her how important it is to look after her stuff but she just shrugs her shoulders grrrrrrrrrr. I know teachers have better things to do then sort out the kids stuff but sending letters home like this doesn't help when they know full well the item has been lost.

Oh I name DS socks Blush

Everything is named. Even then when he came home wearing another girls pupils un-named polo shirt I sent it back washed and they didn't return his named one.

I suppose the teacher having a 30 second chat at end of day would be easier but I know most have things to do and it can mean they get caught up so a letter easier?

MayDayChild · 25/06/2011 08:00

Youarekidding, I am currently undergoing severe anxiety that even though I am naming Everything (haven't decided on socks yet), someone else will wear it home anyway! So perhaps some parents figure what's the point.

OOAOML · 25/06/2011 08:43

We are told PE kit is to be left in school, it gets sent home periodically. I did find once that I got 3 plimsolls back, and a few other parents have had them mixed up. I don't bother labelling socks, I think for the cost of socks it isn't worth the time. At our school lost property goes into a basket, and they are very happy for parents to come in and look. At the end of term they have a display of lost property, and unclaimed stuff goes to charity.

Blush Blush Blush I feel like such a moron. This morning I sat down with dd and was able to have an actual 2 way conversation (After school she doesn't seem to have the ability to answer any questions re school!). She tells me she hasn't seen her plimsols since before half term and her teacher has been reminding her every week to ask mummy to send them in. Sooooo I look in her shoe basket in her wardrobe and voila one pair of plimsols stuck at the bottom. I take it all back - Ht is a wonderful person and was quite right to send me the letter. In my defense it was a crap week with lots going on so maybe I can be forgiven.

My son (only just started reception class) had only had his new shoes a 2/3 weeks when he came out of school one day with just one shoe.
He couldnt find the other one.
The caretaker bless him, turned the class room upside down trying to find it, but it never turned up..
I insisted that the School paid for another pair, they gave me £30 to buy another pair.

mrsbiscuits · 25/06/2011 11:49

YABU I get DS to bring his kit home every couple of weeks to wash, the idea that it sits there for a whole term seems a bit grim to me. If something is missing I get him to check at school and we usually find it ( he often has left it out of the bag and under his peg) I don't expect teachers to spend all their time looking for PE kit.

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2011 12:02

Grin busted op!!!

lettinggo · 25/06/2011 12:07

YABU definitely. Your dd needs to learn to take responsibility for her stuff. She's lost her stuff and you're blaming the school???

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2011 12:10

Read the op's shock update before posting that she's being unreasonable any more on thread.Grin

lettinggo · 25/06/2011 12:14

I read the update. The point still stands that she thought her daughter lost her stuff in school and her reation was to blame the school and write a snotty note to the HT. That's UR in my book. So the stuff turned up at home and now she's sorry, doesn't change my opinion.

LittleMissFlustered · 25/06/2011 12:27

My daughter consistently had stuff stolen. Three full PE kits and four sweaters. All school 'branded' and all suitably labelled with name and class. Got chuffing annoying, especially when you go through the lost property three times a term. Now refuse to buy school PE kit, she has the tesco PE stuff, and we've not had that go missing, as no other child has them (most have either school stuff or a tracksuit) so they can't be stolen easily.

FancyALittle · 25/06/2011 12:30

Well done for updating us OP - very brave, ha!

Maybe the 'tone' of a simple proforma shouldn't be analysed or taken personally?

takeonboard · 25/06/2011 12:40

Grin you are very honest OP, i have done that many times but haven't owned up to my own stupidity!!
At my DS's school we have the email address's of all the parents in the class and nearly every week in the early years there was at least 1 email asking if anyone had seen their DC's shirt/tie whatever, it usually worked and things found their way back to their rightful owner.

KateMiddletonsMum · 25/06/2011 12:44

Have you got all the mums in your class's email addresses? If my little one comes home without stuff (which is all very clearly labelled!!!) I send a quick email to the class...however I've yet to get anything back Hmm but at least I feel I tried!

QuintessentialShadow · 25/06/2011 12:48

Why do kids wear plimsolls for pe anyway, why not trainers?

I'm liking the coloured running stitch idea as labels are always inside the clothes so you can't see when they are on.

RustyBear · 25/06/2011 13:10

We have had parents like that, verity - they just relabel the item they 'find' with their child's name - which is why at least one mum I know puts an extra label hidden up the sleeve.

But a surprising number of parents seem to think that any unlabelled uniform is fair game - if they lose something they will just go to the lost property bin & find an unlabelled item the same size.
