To want to amputate to give Molly a better life

I did a post last week when I found out my dog Molly had bone cancer, today we were at the vets as she can't walk anymore on her from leg, she can't put her paw down. The vet suggested to amputate the leg to give her a better quality of life. They are not saying amputation will increase her lifespan. Do I put her through this? As anyone been though this? We do have another dog Rossco whos only got 3 legs, he lost his back leg as a puppy in a road accident and as adapted well, we adopted him afterwards.

you know whats best! I only said that as it sounded like she was sick, I am no dog killer!

figgyrolls Molly as lumps under her arm pit and a massive boney lump on her ribs, that doesn't seem painful when I touch it but the lumps under her arm are causing her to limp. I am so glad your dog is doing well, it's hearing about the positive outcomes that are keeping us going.

Really good luck Pumpernickel, my dog lives with my parents now and they were terribly worried that they were going to have to say goodbye to her as they had recently lost their other dog (long story but they couldn't be seperated after a long term stay when my lease didn't allow dogs! then I just couldn't take her from the other dog!) and thought she might follow suit pretty quickly. It is a nice story and she has really got an even newer lease of life but for how long we don't know. We did agree to no more surgery and the Vet did say it probably wasn't worth doing the chemo to extend her life HOWEVER after seeing her recovery he changed his mind and said it would be worth a shot! However we are equally aware it could have gone terribly wrong in the other direction as until he opened her up he just couldn't tell. I really hope it goes well for Molly and the outcome is good. Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Molly is lucky to have such love.

I also forgot to send you hugs (damn protocol) - so here they are, Not tight rib-squeezing ones but just kind friendly ones to sympathise...

Dogs seem to manage so well on three legs, really amazing. I hope the results of the x-rays are positive, Pumpernickel, keeping my fingers crossed for your and your lovely Molly. It is worth it, if she has a quality of life after the amputation then any time she has is going to be a bonus.. and it's the only life she has. I'd do the same in your circumstances. :)

Good luck for tomorrow Pump, I hope you and Molly have a long and happy time together!

Well we have had the xray and it's no spread to the lungs or other organs.
The vet said it's likely to be chondrosacoma and not osteosarcoma.
Shes going in on wednesday to have her operation.

Good luck for Molly and you next week Pumpernickel. It is so heartbreaking when dogs get ill, my Jack Russel had cancer (not bone) when she was five, after two big ops, I was thinking 'that's it, I'm not putting her through any more', but they managed to get it all, and now she's a grand old lady of 14.

I hope Molly gets relief from her op. and you have as much more time with her as is possible Smile

Thanks kurri and I'm so glad your jack Russell is well. I must admit jack russells are hardy breeds.
