To think no sensible parent would do this?

A boy from Ds's class at school is picked up by his dad and taken home on the back of a motorbike!! He wears a helmet but then just his school shirt and shorts. If he did come off while they were travelling at speed the poor child would have his skin ripped to shreds.

Aibu to think this is absolute madness? Who let's their 9 year old ride on the back of a motorbike!?

There is no point in risking it, I don't think. And I am not the most risk averse parent, far from it. But it is simple enough to put some leather trews on.

I too cringe when I see kids riding bikes with shorts on, stupid buggers.

Total madness. Like others I have a friend would not be alive today if he hadn't have been wearing his leathers. He still lost a leg...but the leathers stopped him bleeding to death before the paramedics got to him.

Supermummy74 · 22/06/2011 16:10

Its perfectly legal to do it if their feet can touch the foot rest.
But as he was not dressed properly then thats madness

Pumpernickel10 · 22/06/2011 16:12

Well we have a bike and no way would I let DD go on the back and shes nearly 11,its total madness to me.

I took my 7 year old son to France on my Kawasaki. he loved every moment of it. I will say that he had the full gear on though. I have never, and would never take him out on the back of my bike without his leathers, boots, gloves and skid lid on.

Insomnia11 · 22/06/2011 16:47

Agree it's fine with the proper gear.

Fine for other countries to be blasé about road safety but a lot of European countries also have a far higher number of road accidents than we do...

i would not take a child pillion without full leathers, a helmet and making sure they could hold on as well as reach the pegs.

the cost of full leathers for a child which they'll grow out of soon, makes it prohibitive.

i say it's bloody irresponsible and i wouldn't do it.

microserf · 22/06/2011 17:01

YANBU. they aren't called "donorcycles" for no reason.

at the speed they are travelling, the child should have protective clothing. personally, i wouldn't permit my child on a motorbike at all as i know too many people who've had accidents, but that's my choice as a parent.
