to ask where you all buy your clothes from?

I have always been of the cheap and cheerful, disposable fashion type of mindset, buying from places like Primark, Peacocks, Tesco etc.

However, a woman I've met on the school run always looks absolutely fantastic but doesn't have a huge amount of clothes, she goes for quality rather than quantity, and a classic style of clothing rather than very trendy. So for example every other winter she spends £200 or more on a really good coat, that will go with everything and pull everything together, and she says it sort of updates her wardrobe.

I'm thinking going for quality rather than quantity is the way I'm going to go with clothes shopping as often I buy far too many items that just sit in the wardrobe or don't go with a lot else.

Where do you all shop?

Why not buy vintage? You get the quality, and individuality, and if you sell it on after a couple of years, sometimes get more than you paid for it. Apparently I look about 30 and very well off, when in fact I'm nearly 40, and skint ( getting my vintage company off the ground)! Best to start in vintage stores as you need to try things on really. It also mixes well with high street pieces x

I have cheap stuff that lasted ages though. I had a long denim skirt from Top Shop which I wore for about 15 years. I tend to know now by the material and making what will last and what will not.

The thing is my size has gone from 8 to 14 in the last six years and up and down in between so I tend not to buy expensive stuff, as in a few months it might not fit. I used to keep stuff in the hope that it might fit again but I thought if I ever get to a size 10 again I'll bloody well want a new wardrobe as a reward! Also I am the anti-hoarder and like a nice ordered wardrobe. Not everything in the house is ordered (filing is appalling at the moment, enormous backlog) but my wardrobe and drawers are immaculate.

i am rubbish at buying clothes, and often end up with stuff i don't like/doesn't suit me.
this has got worse since having dc, and therefore less time
the stuff that i do actually wear tends to be from GAP, fatface, and whitestuff. I am 5'9" and size 14-16 and the stuff there seems to be well cut for big birds like me.

Zara, Gap, H&M, sometimes TopShop, Office for shoes. I've gone right off Primark/supermarket clothes because I've just done a huge clearout and threw so many away that I've hardly ever worn.

Primark, Tesco, Asda, Peacocks, New Look, H&M, DP's, Select. Cheap disposable stuff mainly, but I'm tryin to lose weight at the moment, so therefore dont buy an awful lot of clothes.

I buy my clothes from Peacocks, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's. Pyjamas and things like that from Primark. I find they last well enough if I follow the washing instructions and wash inside out.

MadeUpMoniker · 22/06/2011 12:23

Supermarkets, new look, H&M, charity shops or other cheap places.

I'm the wrong person to ask though, to e clothes are js something to stop me being naked..

quirrelquarrel · 22/06/2011 12:41

Just Topshop- in out, quick quick once or twice a year. I get the plainest of everything and last year bought about eight jumpers at £0-4 each in my charity shop :o
I am v. shocked at Topshop prices, but they do last a long time.

I tend to find that I adopt a style for about 3 years and then my tastes change as I age and/or my circumstances change. I tend to shop at high end of high street for clothes - casual (Reiss, Whistles, LKB, AF etc) and work (Hobbs, Fenn Wright Manson, Austin Reed etc). Designer for work accessories (eg Prada, Rupert S, Choos) and high end of high street for casual accessories (eg Russell Bromley). Bargain end of high street (eg New Look, Primark) for days at home with DC. Plus TK Maxx!

Boden, Next, John Lewis, M&S, Joules, Jigsaw, sometimes GAP, Monsoon; occasionally supermarket stuff but I ALWAYS regret it as the quality is awful and false ecomony. Very occasionally venture to our local designer outlet centre and find the odd thing worth buying. I like to have 2 coats to choose from at any one time; one 'proper', one mac or similar. I have fewer shoes than any other woman I know, but the ones I have are lovely.
