To recycle old presents

I have a bottom draw the I put all unwanted presents in, mainly it's people who've sent DD something she's already got. We've a party the weekend and we've a lovely hello kitty vanity case. Is it crass to send this as a present. DH says yes and I say no.

I agree with you, we do the same thing here.

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 18:09

I knew I was right, its DH who's wrong. The gifts are brand new I really can't see his logic.

YANBU

But do make sure you don't give it back to the person who gave it to you...

Batteryhuman · 21/06/2011 18:11

Its called regifting. Perfectly ok so long as you don't regive to the person who gave it to you. There are items that have been circulating in my family for generations in this fashion.

Marne · 21/06/2011 18:13

Your DH IBU, we have a party in a few weeks and we will be taking a 'moon sand' set which dd1 had for x-mas and has not played with Grin.

curlycat · 21/06/2011 18:13

we do this here as well - in fact just did it on Saturday!

Mumwithadragontattoo · 21/06/2011 18:16

I have literally just wrapped a gift my son was given for his birthday which my daughter already has. It is new and something I might well have got the recipient anyway. YANBU.

MixedClassBaby · 21/06/2011 18:17

YANBU. It makes sense, especially if the gift is really suitable for someone you know. Having said that, I recently 're-gifted' a book that I already had but forgot to check if the person who gave it to me had written Happy birthday, Mixed..etc in the front cover so a potential Blush there.

thegruffalosma · 21/06/2011 18:50

I wouldn't give it if there was a chance that the person who gave it you would find out. So if dd's friend who gave it to her was going to the party or if they are also friends with the giver I wouldn't. I am ridiculously paranoid though!
I have no problem with reusing gifts in principle - just wouldn't want the giver to know iyswim.

Katvondee · 21/06/2011 18:56

Pumpernickel you bloody cheapskate :)

LuckyMrsT · 21/06/2011 19:10

Perfectly reasonable. I'm always eyeing up DS's new stuff to see what I can pass on. He's too young to know and really didn't need three ELC activity octopuses. Octopi...?

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 19:15

Well the hello kitty vanity case is all wrapped up.
Thanks kat how did you know I was so cheap Grin

I thought everybody does this.
As long as it is not tatty, it is fine.

zipzap · 21/06/2011 19:37

Would your dh ever get near enough to the present during wrapping to know?

Oh and yadnbu.

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 19:38

No he steers clear of that.

YANBU, I regift all the time from my a cupboard full of unwanted gifts. Have been doing it for years but am paranoid about regifting to the original donor so I keep a list of every gift I am given and give. Yup I am a sad case!

YANBU - the kids get given too much stuff - especially by one of the godmothers. I do pass it on sometimes as a top-up or send it to charity. It reminds me that I need to email her and ask her again, please, not to bring a sackful for DD's birthday. She would be happy with a fiver's worth of princess colouring/puzzle book and some sparky felt-tips. GM spends aroudn £60 on a 6yo Shock and it is tbh tat plus it makes DD1 avaricious and DD2 sad (her GM fecked off out of our lives and barely managed a text last year Hmm)
