To expect free butter when ordering a jacket potato in debenhams?

We went into Debenhams cafe last week. Under the name of the cafe, originally titled 'Deli', was written 'Soups, Salads, Sandwiches, Jackets'. Decided to have a jacket potato for lunch, got to the counter to be told you have to wait 25 mintues for jacket potatoes. Am I being unreasonable to expect a cafe that has them written up as a main attraction to have them ready to serve? Most places have them ready to go, unless they have run out - not the case here.
AIBU to also expect two of those tiny wrapped pats of butter with it included in the price - they wanted an extra 8p a pat for these?
And another gripe while I'm at it - they had the children's meals written up as being served with 'potato and vegetables' -am I being pendantic when I ask for beans and broccoli to be told "you can only have 1 vegetable" ?
In the grand scheme of things it's not that important, but Dp and I sat there whinging like a couple of victor meldrews and wondered if it was just us, or if it was a justified gripe! Couldn't be arsed to complain, I really would have felt like a grumpy old woman, but would like to know I wouldn't have been the only moany one!

They should put the butter (not marge!)on, ask if you want salt and pepper, and add this, then add the topping. I may have given this too much thought.

Gissabreak, the cafe in the Waitrose I used to go to was fantastic. Lovely food, clean tables, and they would bring it to the table for me as often I had DS and was feeding. They also dealt very well with an old bloke sitting in the cafe but not eating or drinking when I was looking for a table with DS - asked him politely to move to the chairs near the tills. Most places would make you deal with this yourself. Can't praise them highly enough.

EightiesChick · 21/06/2011 10:37

Morrisons and Asda are always OK in my experience too and serve you quickly without the Debenhams shenanigans.

knittedbreast · 21/06/2011 10:39

the only butter i eat is clover and due to the general shitness of shops MICROWAVING their BAKED potatoes (so so wrong) i wont eat baked pots out.

Ive never eaten in debs, but my nana used to take me to BHS (i know,i know) and their cottage pie with thick gravy was amazing! i think it was under a fiver and delicious. next time go there!

ErinGoBraLess · 21/06/2011 10:47

BHS cafe in Manchester is fab. Nowhere near as expensive as Debenhams.

Geordieminx · 21/06/2011 10:50

The worst cafe for value at the moment is Dobbies. Their prices seem to have gone up and up. Sandwiches for Dh, ds(4) and I, and a couple of pieces of cake usually ends up being £25+ which IMO you can get proper pub meal for that.

SultanV · 21/06/2011 10:52

Debenhams cafes really are the pits. We're Telegraph subscribers, and as such can get free coffees in Debenhams cafes. But, as I said to dh, no-one would ever want to go into a Debenhams cafe unless at gunpoint.

Chandon · 21/06/2011 10:57

but what were you expecting?

Why would ANYONE ever want to eat in that sort of place?

Confused
emmanumber3 · 21/06/2011 10:57

I've never eaten in a Debenhams cafe (in fact never go into department stores) but I do recommend Morrisons cafe. Everything in our local one is cooked fresh but arrives quickly & is excellent value for money. Oh, and the jacket potatoes come with butter and lots of filling Grin.

I have an issue with Asda & BHS though because of the way their food is out on display on a hot plate. It really puts me off to see the congealed bits around the edge of dishes or the "unpopular" dish of the day that has grown a skin Hmm.

knittedbreast · 21/06/2011 10:58

if you are in the shop and fancy a snack or coffee why wouldnt you try it

knittedbreast · 21/06/2011 10:59

that skin is often all he gravy bubbling to ther surface-absolutly nothing wrong with tha lol

Chandon · 21/06/2011 11:00

what we need in Britain is a food revolution.

Not one dictated by a sleb like Jamie, but one coming from US the people.

Who thinks a baked potato or a sandwich is a meal?! you'd pay for?!

DO not put up with mediocrity!!!

knittedbreast · 21/06/2011 11:01

a baked pot isnt a meal?

what do you eat for lunch then?

ExitPursuedByAKitten · 21/06/2011 11:06

Agree Debenhams cafes are shite. Took DD once and ending up marching out - can't remember why, but the smell probably had something to do with it. I am renowned for having very demanding standards though amongst my nearest and dearest. You know, decent tasting food, served with a smile, at the correct temperature on clean tables and with clean cutlery.

ShatnersBassoon · 21/06/2011 11:11

"Who thinks a baked potato or a sandwich is a meal?! you'd pay for?!"

Confused
manchestermummy · 21/06/2011 11:18

DD1 doesn't like cordial, it's not that I don't want her having it now and again.

Our Morrisons cafe is terrible. Waited 45 minutes for a piece of toast once. It's dirty and filled with grumpy old women who drag their shopping trolleys through the cafe while tutting and hissing and grumping at pushchairs. DD1 luuuurves it though. It's her favourite eatery. Hmm Grin [cheap child emoticon]

manchestermummy · 21/06/2011 11:20

Oh I don't mean shopping basket things on wheels, btw. Full, twin-carrying metal jobs...

OrangeHat · 21/06/2011 11:25

Jacket potatoes and sandwiches are perfectly acceptable things to buy for lunch.

Depending on fillings etc they can be a balanced nutritious choice.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 21/06/2011 11:28

Ooh I was just going to recommend Morrisons cafe!

thegruffalosma · 21/06/2011 11:30

The worst cafe I've ever beeb to was the one in Tesco - before the were Costa Coffee. The tables were constantly cleaned with filthy cloths and had black tide marks all over them and the 'clean' cutlery all had crusty food stuck to it. Vile.

Geordieminx · 21/06/2011 11:50

D's fav is ikea cafe. He loves it, and it really is fab value. Tends to be quiet during the week too.

Olifin · 21/06/2011 12:15

Lol @jkt spud or a sandwich not being a meal. What's the issue Chandon? Reminds me of the time an mner tried to convince us that a baguette with tuna in is Bad Food. Was that you Chandon or perhaps Bonsoir?
