I see a lot of woman using mobile phones whist driving and very rarely see any men chatting on the phone using their mobile.

Why don't they get hands free for the car

do they not know how to shop in halfords or the like to purchase a handsfree set for their mobile and not break the law

AIBU to think that they put others in danger instead of spending a few bob on a handsfree set?

Oh if any men want to own up to doing this feel free - or mention any men you have seen - its juts i don't happen to to have seen any men doing this opposed to a couple woman a day chatting away.

one woman had fag in one hand and phone in the other - it was quite amazing if it hadn't been so stupid Shock

its men as well as women I think white van drivers are the worst culprits

ivykaty44 · 20/06/2011 15:36

In defence of men.... they only ever use their mobile in the car when negotiating a roundabout, contraflow or some other major hazard. Face sideways and squinting as they struggle to keep the phone wedged between cheek and ear... one hand on the steering wheel, the other altenating between the gear stick or knocking the ash off a fag.

Can't stand it, whichever gender is the culprit.

JoySzasz · 20/06/2011 15:40

I thought it was ilegal to do this in the UK now ?

One thing I was happy about.

Hammy02 · 20/06/2011 15:41

It is illegal. Yet still some numpties do it. It is on a par with drink driving IMO.

JoySzasz · 20/06/2011 15:43

Right, thanks ...

In this state they all do it,makes me livid.

It is not illegal yet

peachyuk · 20/06/2011 15:45

no just getting fed up with all the bashing like other posters have pointed out

anyway i'm left handed and hold the phone with my left hand, can't change gear and hold the phone at the same time

and for the record its one of those things that makes my blood boil male or female

eastegg · 20/06/2011 15:47

I honestly don't think I've ever seen a woman do this, only men actually.

And it's definitely illegal, has been for ages, the thing that changed relatively recently is that you can now get points for it whereas I don't think you could before.

M0naLisa · 20/06/2011 15:49

is it true that if you see someone on their mobile phone whilst driving you can take their reg plate number down and report the to the police.

TechLovingDad · 20/06/2011 15:51

What annoys me is people driving new expensive cars, i.e. Range Rovers, etc but holding a phone to their ear. Some of these cars have Bluetooth built in.

Arrogant sense of self importance.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 20/06/2011 15:52

Women definitely do it. There's no gender gap when it comes to 'it'll never happen to me'-ism.

MindyMacready · 20/06/2011 15:54

Maybe it's because of the time of day I tend to drive at speeds when I can notice, but I'd say it's about 70-30 here. Women to Men that is. Usually younger women vs white man drivers.

MindyMacready · 20/06/2011 15:55

man = van man

OOAOML · 21/06/2011 00:30

I've seen both men and women do it. Including the stupid cow yesterday who came tearing up the road and drove right through the red light at the pedestrian crossing, talking away on her phone. Swas going too fast for me to get her number or she'd have been reported.

piprabbit · 21/06/2011 00:34

I don't understand why anybody thinks this is an OK thing to do any more.

HellAtWork · 21/06/2011 00:40

I've seen men and women do it.

But the worst experience has been when I've been in a cab (licensed min-cabs) and the irrelevant detail male cab driver has answered a fricking call not using a headset. Twol have even had the temerity to get so arsey with me (I have asked nicely but hard to do that after third time saying excuse me when they can't hear you because they are having a conversation) once I have had to actually get out of the cab or (he got pretty angry) or another time say I am getting out of the cab to call their company for someone else to come and pick me up who isn't going to recklessly endanger mine or my son's life (he apologised but was arsey initially). Twats.

NestaFiesta · 21/06/2011 09:20

My Mum's car was written off by a male lorry driver who didn't see her because HE WAS READING. Luckily she was fine.

I have only ever seen men talk on mobiles whilst driving but I don't think that means its necessarily gender specific.

TrilllianAstra · 21/06/2011 09:33

For the same reason men do.

Because they think that their call is important and they think that it's not affecting their driving.

What's with all the "why do women xxxx" threads?

National Go on a Women's Forum and Make An Untrue Insulting Generalisation About Women Week.

Thanks Thready, I obviously didn't get the memo! :o

mumblebum · 21/06/2011 09:36

I saw a man driving a van, steering with his elbows while texting on his phone this morning!

Can't say I've noticed it being a more female than male thing. I have noticed it has started to become more common again, after people seemed to stop doing it for a while when it first got banned.

Hammy02 · 21/06/2011 09:37

I am amazed at some of the apathy on this thread. It is inexcusable. No call is so important that it can't wait for you to pull over. People have been killed due to idiots using their mobiles while driving.

xstitch · 21/06/2011 09:39

IME it is a 50/50 split between men and women. Although I would agree that anyone doing it is putting people's life in danger.

Andrewofgg · 21/06/2011 18:00

It's men in vans; it's women in cars. Often with DC in the back. And often in the sort of car that screams If I can afford this I can afford a bloody handsfree! - but still they do it. I know of a woman who was disqualified for twelve points - four lots of three - all "earned" by using her sodding mobile while driving.

kittywalker · 21/06/2011 18:02

I agree with the van drivers comments, IME that's the majority of people I see on the road using a mobile whilst driving, a handful of lorry drivers and not so many women.
