Was discussing this with my mate in the pub earlier. Why are women just not as funny (generally speaking) as men? Where are all the great women comedians? I can only think of Victoria Wood and that chubby one with the grey hair. It's just weird.

Top 3 ever UK female comics
1 - Wood
2 - The big lass I mentioned
3 - Her off dinner ladies

I mean, come on, this lot are shite.

Please add Joyce Grenfell to your list.

And Barbara Pym, Nancy Mitford and maybe Jane Austen. Yy, they're writers. But that's part of the point, isn't it? Somehow "comic" is somehow seen as male stand-up, solo comedian/performer - not a role women have historically been groomed for.

Linda Smith - very funny lady.

i think people laugh more at men, as laughter is partly a fear-response.

mdowdall · 19/06/2011 23:38

Read Austen when I did my a levels. Sorry, not funny.

Victoria Wood is indeed shite.

Leaving aside the male dominated comedy industry, women are not rewarded for being funny in the same way men are (ie with sex/partnership/love), therefore fewer women strive to be funny.

Women are constantly fed the message that what they say is secondary to how they look, ergo many women spend more time on that.

Or something.

mdowdall · 19/06/2011 23:39

would rather eat my own ear wax than have a lock in at my local BeerTricks. It's pants.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 19/06/2011 23:40

Ah, you don't think Austen is funny? Well, gosh, I best agree with you not the English Lit professors, hadn't I? Who knows, some of them might not even have penises! Shock

ThatllDoPig · 19/06/2011 23:41

That an interesting theory eggy but can you think of a comedian who scares you? Or is it subliminal, and any man?

EggyAllenPoe · 19/06/2011 23:41

joanna lumley is also funny.

animula · 19/06/2011 23:41

Smile a lot of what passes for "comedy-that-women-aren't-good-at" is very -obvious,-very-quick,-over-in-three-minutes,-lowest-common-denominator humour, too. Which slightly slightly discriminates against the (somewhat cruel) subtle humour of comics such as Jane Austen.

mdowdall · 19/06/2011 23:41

Mine wasnt really a professor feministdragon. Just some sweaty bloke.
