Why do some drivers stop in blue cycle boxes at traffic lights

I was just wondering why some drivers stop in cycle blue boxes at traffic lights and seem to totally ignore that they are there for a reason thus making it more dangerous for cyclists to cycle?

Well, it's a blind bend on a country road ... patch of mud, stray animal, dropped bale of hay, big pothole ... any of those could have you it the ditch if you were stupid enough to take it at speed. Why pick on the cyclists? (Though I agree riding double round a bend is not very bright.)

blackeyedsusan · 19/06/2011 20:42

you are supposed to stop behind the first line but if the lights change and you can stop before the second line you should. that leaves you sitting like a fool in the cycle box...

LRDTheFeministDragon · 19/06/2011 20:44

I don't think 'I overshot' would explain all of them though, blackeyed. Some people cruise into to them while the light is red, too.

It makes me mad because I want to feel morally outraged at crappy cyclists round here, and drivers like this let the side down! Grin

CurlyBoy · 19/06/2011 20:44

sigh Anyway, my point was simply that there is not enough room on the average road for two cars and a bike. They shouldn't be there. It's the same for farm machinery, horses and joggers. Go ahead and widen the road or build a bike path. Better yet, get a licence plate and insurance for that bike as well so you can be identified and run over ticketed when you blow through a red light.

To be completely honest I never stop in the bike box because I try and follow the highway code. I hate people who stop in box junctions or park on double yellows, etc.

Northernlurker · 19/06/2011 20:45

Curlyboy - you sound lethal. Has it ever occurred to you that maybe taking a blind bend at 60mph is errrrrra bit dim?

Heaven forbid you have to brake after all. Hmm

Northernlurker · 19/06/2011 20:46

Oh and no there isn't room for two cars and a bike. That's why you in your car should stay behind the bike till it's safe to overtake. I know the thought of having to slow down till it's safe to pass will cause your genitals to wither but try and deal with the concept.

CurlyBoy · 19/06/2011 20:46

Nope. Doing 60 around a blind bend is fun!

LRDTheFeministDragon · 19/06/2011 20:47

Oh, good. I'll pop some flowers on your grave then curly. Hope you don't kill someone else while you're about it.

CurlyBoy · 19/06/2011 20:53

I so love winding up indignant cyclists.

Yes, I have a stupidly fast hot hatch. It's my mid-life crisis car. I like to drive in an assertive way, usually like I've just stolen it. I truly believe roads are for cars and trucks, and cyclists should find somewhere safer to ride. Can't you find a nice riverfront or park to ride along? How about a canal?

Riveninside · 19/06/2011 20:54

Gcse' s finished already curlyboy?

CurlyBoy · 19/06/2011 21:00

Not sure what you mean Riveninside. I'm 42, married, 1 kid, have a BFA in Fine Art, and manage a company. Just because I don't share your views doesn't mean I'm young and stupid. :)

mdowdall · 19/06/2011 21:02

Dont send em near the fucking rivers and canals curlyboy. I walk my dog they and they are a pain in the arse the lycra wearing twats.

CurlyBoy · 19/06/2011 21:03

Hahaha@mdowdall

Northernlurker · 19/06/2011 21:10

Oh I think we can be fairly sure you're stupid curlyboy - going by your posts on this thread at any rate. Sadly you don't appear to have the excuse of youth.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 19/06/2011 21:19

I think she means you're coming across like a bored child, curly.

PMSL at the BA in Fine Art though - nice detail. And you manage a company? My, my, your mother must be proud - will she also be very pleased when you're up for manslaughter because you think it's 'fun'?

CurlyBoy · 19/06/2011 21:49

Not sure why I'm stupid just because I don't agree with you. I don't think you're stupid because you like to ride your bike. Silly and misguided maybe, but not stupid.

Thanks LRD, my mum IS proud.

Hmmmm... bored child? Yeah, probably. Isn't that what Mumsnet for?

taczilla · 19/06/2011 22:06

Poor wee Curly and his little willy boy racer cliched existence you should really be on a radio phone-in tonight not here dear. Now that said I must ignore you.

CurlyBoy · 19/06/2011 22:09

Should I mention I'm a fan of Top Gear? Does that help? :)

CurlyBoy · 19/06/2011 22:13

Oh, and my car choice has nothing to do with my penis size. It was the fastest car I could afford and I find driving fast enjoyable. I'm far too old to be worried about looking cool or trying to pick up birds.

Pedallleur · 19/06/2011 22:20

Since you are such an expert driver, might I point out that when driving you should always match speed to the distance you can see ahead. You might one day find that bend you round has another prat driver involved in a collision and you degree might not stop the car in time. Also, it is a road fund not a road tax. Lets hope that you know the difference between funds and taxes when the accounts are being checked.

Mdowdall. Next time I'm avoiding the dog toffee which the inconsiderate dog walkers left, I'll be thinking of you

CocoPopsAddict · 19/06/2011 22:47

It's obvious in most cases. The traffic light is green and you're approaching in your car. It turns amber, and rather than speed up to push through, you try to be good and brake. And end up in the cycling box. As far as I'm aware drivers can legitimately do this as it is better than jumping a red light.

magnolia74 · 19/06/2011 22:58

Grin @ curly, I'm sure most men with small dicks and big cars say the same thing as you Hmm

CurlyBoy · 20/06/2011 10:15

No point in arguing over semantics Pedalleur. Either way drivers pay for the roads we drive on. On, and I never said I was an expert driver btw. Thanks for your confidence in me!

Quite possibly magnolia74, but in my case it's true. I bought my car simply because it's fast and not because I need to prove anything. If I did I would have bought a used BMW or something.

Riveninside · 20/06/2011 10:41

Whats the point of a fast car? Any car will reach the speed limit.
We allmpay for the roads, not just drivers. And the roads are for all users, not just drivers.

mummytime · 20/06/2011 10:41

Everyone pays for the roads - its called taxes. I don't see cyclists go through red lights (I don't live in London). I do see more cyclists than cars going the wrong way down one way streets, and dressing in black at night/twilight. However the car that thought it could take a short cut the wrong way up a one way street on Sunday morning would have caused me more damage than the bikes I often see.

Basically some people are idiots, and they are distributed through cars and bikes, and even pedestrians.
