To think letting a dog lick your baby is a bit gross?

Just back from MIL's where I watched the dog lick his bum clean, lick 8 month old niece's hands and then my niece put her hands in her mouth and rub her tired eyes! I informed SIL what I'd just seen and she said I was fussing over nothing! Made my stomach churn but am I being unreasonably 'fussy'?!

Me too megapixels, me too - PSML!

Oh and our dog licks DSs feet when he is in his highchair all the time. DS thinks it is brill! Line drawn at hands and face tho!

DogsBestFriend · 19/06/2011 18:26

It wouldn't bother me in the least. To me, you're overreacting and YABU.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen but I've in all my years I've never seen a problem caused as a result of a dog licking a baby or child.

MitchiestInge · 19/06/2011 18:30

Oh, wanted to say what mofo said. I let my spaniel lick my 4 month old grandson's face, daughter would be horrified. She uses MN though, better wave 'hello'!

muffinflop · 19/06/2011 18:33

Ok I should have rephrased the title! It wasn't the fact that the dog licked the baby - but the fact that it licked it's bum, then licked the baby's hands and the baby then put her hands in her mouth and rubbed her eyes. Maybe I was being unreasonable then, made me feel a bit sick though!

I was brought up with dogs and cats and I think it is grim. And I am of the view that people can be too clean, but that is just nasty. And there is probably a risk of giving the kid worms or something. Eugh.

MitchiestInge · 19/06/2011 18:39

Think you can get giardia from dogs actually? And other things.

I got a cut foot on holiday, got back to the accommodation and OH's dog immediately knew something was wrong, went straight to the cut and licked it clean. I kept thinking gross antiseptic mouth, antiseptic mouth and by the next day my foot was better.

But dogs + kids, no, I can't - sorry!

RockThePots · 19/06/2011 18:42

DD got licked by a puppy today. She loved it!

It really doesn't bother me, I'm sure her own hands are much dirtier after she has been grubbing around the park. I was raised on a farm so hygiene wise it takes a lot to bother me.

MitchiestInge · 19/06/2011 18:45

Maybe dogs get giardiasis from us actually.

Ha ha revoltingpeasant , lick, lick!! Distracted by my dog wagging his tail :)

Omigawd · 20/06/2011 01:31

There is quite a lot of evidence that we are too clean now and kids don't build up a resistance to many basic germs etc. I wouldn't let the dog lick the baby's bum clean though.

AmberLeaf · 20/06/2011 01:38

Gross.

Im firmly in the 'eat a bit of dirt before you die' camp but thats just nasty.
