to think DP should let me squirt some breastmilk in his eye?

He's got some kind of eye infection - very sore and he's trying not to rub it. He has some eye bath stuff but it's not making much difference.

I reckon milk would be very soothing and I'm sure breastmilk is supposed to be good for eye infections - he's being all funny about it though Hmm

If I had squirted BM in my DP's eye I expect he'd have squirted something back in mine..... I'm sure it's very medicinal but if he didn't want it in the first place I'd have left it.

wonkylegs · 19/06/2011 08:05

Cooled boiled water on cotton wool to clean the eye constantly and regularly (several times a day) is the best thing for conjunctivitis
It takes some persistence but it does make a difference (drDH)

ReshapeWhileDamp · 19/06/2011 09:33

I'd have expressed and offered a pipette! Grin But then my aim's bad. However, while I really really want breastmilk to be a magical cure-all substance, I've tried using it on both DSs' eyes now, when they had conjunctivitis and it didn't do anything either time. Sad

seenitallbefore · 19/06/2011 10:53

A painful red eye in an adult is not the same as a sticky eye in a newborn. He does not need breast milk in his eye. He needs a trip to either a pharmacist,an optician or a doctor.

GypsyMoth · 19/06/2011 10:57

You can't tell some people.... Bet op comes back saying the breastmilk has 'cured' him!

RitaMorgan · 19/06/2011 12:29

Unfortunately it hasn't cured him and he is currently waiting to be seen at a walk-in centre :(

well hope he hasnt got what i have got,its bloody painful!!

and hope breast milk hasnt made it worse!! yuk!

wannaBe · 19/06/2011 12:57

people are IMO obsessed with the aledged qualities of breastmilk. And I can't believe people would think it ok for op to put some in her dp's eye without his knowledge. Hmm

Eyes are IMO not to be messed with. I have lots and lots of problems with my right eye due to glaucoma and previous inglamation which periodically flares up when my pressure escalates. I have no sight in that eye so there is nothing to put at risk, but I wouldn't consider putting anything in it I hadn't discussed with someone with medical knowledge first. It is actually very easy to do damage to the eye that cannot be undone.

Op I hope your dp is ok.

fatlazymummy · 19/06/2011 14:14

Of course you are being unreasonable. It's up to your husband to decide what goes in his eyes.
I always used saline, failing that chloremphenicol eye drops are good.

lynehamrose · 19/06/2011 14:20

Yabu - his body,no means no

GypsyMoth · 19/06/2011 20:33

i agree with wannabee about the breastmilk myth.....its just milk at the end of the day!!

op,how is your dh?

4madboys · 19/06/2011 20:43

well its his eye so its up to him but i have used it to treat myself and all my children when they have had conjuncivitis and i know of friends who have expressed and given to other friends so they can use it for their children and it does work for a mild case of conjunctivitis. most gps and midwives etc recomend it, esp for babies.

but if your dh doesnt want it then thats his choice, hope the out of hours dr is of help.

HHLimbo · 19/06/2011 21:23

I am getting mental images of mn parties where everyone is squirting BM in their eyes. Confused

RitaMorgan · 19/06/2011 21:41

He has conjunctivitis and has some drops for it.

GypsyMoth · 19/06/2011 21:43

ahh.....so breastmilk wasnt prescribed for simple conjunctivitus!! interesting!

RitaMorgan · 19/06/2011 21:50

Funnily enough doctors don't tend to prescribe breastmilk for adults. It's more of a home remedy.

fuzzypicklehead · 19/06/2011 21:50

it's always worked for me and both my girls when we've had conjunctivitis. It does have to be squirted straight from the breast, or it will lose it's sterility. (and yes, I'm pretty sure it looked hilarious, esp. when it was my own eyes!) It's also good for soothing irritated skin.

fuzzypicklehead · 19/06/2011 21:54

Forgot to say, the reason it helps is that it's naturally a sterile, isotonic solution (correct pH) with it's own antibacterial properties. It is a pretty common home remedy.

blackeyedsusan · 19/06/2011 22:01

if you are anything like I was, you could squirt it into his eye from across the room, several streams of milk going off in every direction when ready for the next feed...

Dorje · 21/06/2011 02:49

If you have HIV, you can give it to him if your viral load is high! It can contain the HIV virus, so not as sterile as all that, fuzzy.

Blackeyedsusan - I have a sprinkler system also - high pressure spigot Grin

hazeyjane · 21/06/2011 02:59

Bm never worked on my dds or ds when they had sticky eye. ds ended up having his for 9 months!
