amongst other things; sweetcorn, kidney beans and sprouts. In addition to less weird things such as carrots and potatoes?

Don't get me wrong, I've put some fairly random things in a curry myself but I don't expect people to pay me £6 for it...

I think it sounds nice, so YABU Grin

cherry - it was not good! never been back either. I love a good veggie curry, as do my children we would be most put out at the presence of sprouts in a curry! Hopefully you'll find a better curry house. We now have a really good one near us that does amazing veggie currys but also a monkfish one - yummy.

This Indian lady doesn't seem to think there is anything wrong with sprouts in a curry

NanAstley · 17/06/2011 09:48

Sprouts, yes. Sprouts with kidney beans AND sweetcorn? Wrong.

It isn't the individual ingredients, it is the combination that is awful

cherryburton · 17/06/2011 09:49

but you get the impression it's not typical - especially from all the comments from Indian people saying they didn't know you could get brussels sprouts in India...

sausagesandmarmelade · 17/06/2011 09:59

Would eat a veggie curry containing those...

don't see the problem at all

and down south...that price would be reasonable

cherryburton · 17/06/2011 10:12

Have to say I do not feel too fantastic this morning after it...

Punkatheart · 17/06/2011 10:16

Trust me, it is not traditional.

I hear the wind from here cherry!

QueeferSutherland · 17/06/2011 10:23

I'd put kidney beans & pumpkin in a curry!

So what would you put in?

I'd use;
okra
sweet potato
regular potato
butternut squash
cauliflower
carrot
lentils/other beans & legumes
onion

and anything else. Not parsnips though. Shite in a curry.

JanMorrow · 17/06/2011 10:26

I love sprout curry...

HerHissyness · 17/06/2011 10:33

think cherryburton will be changing her name presently to cherryburntbum Grin

Punkatheart · 17/06/2011 10:34

My grandmother used to make the vilest egg curry. (I hate eggs and she knew that)

Never ever take a small Indian woman who has consumed a large egg curry, in a mini on the motorway. Cold day, cannot open the window. All we hear from the back is 'Oops...'

I will never forget it.

QueeferSutherland · 17/06/2011 10:48

Punk, that made me larf.Grin

I had to try and explain to DS what was so funny.

cherryburton · 17/06/2011 10:48

Grin @HerHissyness and Punk - I can only imagine!

Eggs in curry is something I've never been able to get my head around, I'm a bit weird with eggs. Just thinking about it makes me feel slightly nauseous.

Cherry which restaurant was it? I tend to avoid the restaurants on Wilmslow Rd as I lived in a street behind it and the stench from the alleyway was disgusting and put me off. A few of us went into Lal Qila one evening and saw a cockroach scurry across the floor. When my friend complained the manager kicked us out! Whilst we were waiting outside for a cab into Fallowfield a waiter came over and slapped my friend across the face. We called the police but when they went to the restaurant the waiter had disappeared. Anyway when I make a veggie curry I use onions, mushrooms, potato, cauliflower, courgettes, petit pois and lentils. I never make rice. I do a few rotis and a chilli yoghurt sauce.

d0gFace · 17/06/2011 10:57

I dont think yabu, veg curry for me would be onions, tomatoes, potatoes, spinach, mushrooms? I wouldnt expect kidney beans and sweetcorn in an indian curry.

MrSpoc · 17/06/2011 11:03

cherryburton - Not sure which restaraunt you eat in in rusholme for a top notch £6 meal. I eat there regularly and that is cheap.

IShallWearMidnight · 17/06/2011 11:03

we get sprouts in a nice veggie curry from our local place, dish is sabzi roshni (sp?), but fortunately not with kidney beans and sweetcorn.

bagpusss · 17/06/2011 11:41

YANBU. I agree with you and Nan absolutely. Restaurant food should have a certain standard, and putting that stuff in shows a lack of ambition or understanding. Vegetable curry ought to taste of delicious veg, not sweetcorn and sprouts! Kidney beans are kind of neutral, so I wouldn't get worked up about that.
That said, we put all manner of stuff in veg curries and don't worry about compatibility when home cooking. Kidney beans often go in. Never ever sprouts or sweetcorn (grounds for divorce) ditto celery (yuk!)

bagpusss · 17/06/2011 11:43

This is making me HUNGRY! Especially Queefer - agree with your list.

cyberfairy · 17/06/2011 11:47

I ordered a muttar paneer in an Indian in Fleetwood and the cheese was not paneer but mild grated cheddar.

TotemPole · 17/06/2011 11:56

Sprouts in a curry is wrong.

Potato, cauliflower and carrots are fine.

Punkatheart · 17/06/2011 12:22

Mild cheddar not paneer? Now that it awful! I understand that as some food costs rise - paneer is expensive - restataurants might want to cut costs. But some of those substitutions are just lunacy! Not to mention dishonest. I am however, now extremely hungry...
