DS goes to a breakfast club (started last week) on Tuesday and Thursday mornings run by the school. Yesterday he came home and said that he had had Krave and juice for breakfast.

I went to see the manager who runs the club this morning to confirm that this is true, and she said that it was, but its up to the children to choose and there are other options - toast, fruit, weetabix and cornflakes etc.

Now while I understand that its the child choice, I dont think children in a primary school can make that kind of informed choice.

The school has a healthy eating mark and they are very strict about what you have in your lunchbox, but they let this slide?

why don't you have a look on the school's website and see if it has a healthy eating policy?
then quote it at the breakfast club
it might not come under the head's jurisdiction

cjbartlett · 15/06/2011 17:46

why are they particularly bad?

well I wouldn't want my kids having crunchy nut cornflakes for breakfast either, or anything else sugar laden

I know they will when they're old enough to buy there own but surely it's the job of the parent to get them into the habit of eating a healthy breakfast

Shoesytwoesy · 15/06/2011 17:47

Krave is lovely, ds will eat it non stop, can't really stop him as he is 19. I am sure 2 bowls a week won't hurt a 10 year old.

emptyshell · 15/06/2011 17:50

I'm surprised they have Krave. It's v expensive and not a very good example to set as far as accurate spelling is concerned

Hmm... fuck, don't tell Ofsted our cereal isn't meeting phonics objectives!

PinotGrigiosKittens · 15/06/2011 18:14

YANBU OP. Your DS is in peril with that much sugar! Peril I tell ya! He will get giddy.

MrsKravitz · 15/06/2011 18:16

I wouldnt want mine eating that crap either tbh

Are they doing teeth after breakfast? Mine is prone to decay so Id be concerned about that tbh

ballstoit · 15/06/2011 18:26

Well, you could write to the head, I'm sure they have little else on their minds but what the children have for breakfast.

Or, more reasonably, you could ask the manager to think again about offering Krave, perhaps they haven't realised the levels of sugar and salt that are in it.

Or you could ask DS to only have it on one of the mornings he is there, give him a piece of sugar free gum to chew or ask him to rinse his mouth with water when he's finished.

Or, you could give him a healthy breakfast at home, and let the parents who need to use the facility worry about what their DC have for breakfast.

Or you could continue to post outraged posts and do none of the above, which I'm sure cjbartlett would enjoy as it gives her a chance to patronise lesser parents!

My ds goes to breakfast club. They only have wholegrain cereal on offer and sugar is not allowed. They also have fruit, yogurt, juice and toast.

I am surprised that they have Krave. I didn't think it would fit into the healthy school mindset. It is loaded with sugar.

It is also very expensive at over £2 for a very small box. We have it at home as my dd loves it.

peanutbutterkid · 15/06/2011 18:52

Tell the truth, I'd be asking them to serve something healthier, too, keep the Krave for special days.

Jaspants · 15/06/2011 18:57

YANBU - to quote Pagwatch "Breakfast cereal is shit in a box"

Annoying when schools have healthy eating policies yet they're happy for a breakfast club to feed a child a massive sugar rush before school.

BurningBridges · 15/06/2011 20:31

My children want to reassess their disdain for breakfast clubs if its going to be somewhere they can get .... chocolate cereal. (you thought I was going to say it didn't you)

catgirl1976 · 15/06/2011 20:47

YANBU I wouldn't want my children eating that rubbish twice a week.
