to think that hot tubs are just festering pools of bacteria

dead skin cells, stray hairs and possible bodily fluids. I just don't get why people 'relax' in public hot tubs surrounded by other semi naked strangers.

Shock toddlerama
That is so gross.

In reply to the question about the sea. I would go in the sea, I know it's full of all sorts of sewage etc but I just don't find it as gross as hot tubs. I think it's the chlorine smell that is so strong it almost stings your eyes and the close proximity of semi clad strangers and and the fact there is no point to it. The sea is an amazing natural force full of amazing creatures.
A hot tub is the most sterile atmosphere in the most unsterile surroundings.

Hummmmm I have a back garden hot tub and we find it most fun (we are not swingers BTW). It deals with all my aches and pains, especially my shoulder and hip problems and is very relaxing after a busy day.
The kids love it and we have a very strict cleaning rule with it.
Public tubs on the other hand are a no no imo

I think this thread is funny Grin.

I love them, I go in them whenever I get the opportunity.

peanutbutterkid · 15/06/2011 13:59

I grew up with them in the 1970s, DC would love one now.

microfight · 15/06/2011 14:00

1970's swingers heaven! Grin

Have a real horror feeling about hot tubs. makes me think about simmering veg or soup every time i see one. also can't get the gentlemans club image out of my mind either. Had a gay friend who used to refer to it as the wankerama - nuff said! i think they are popular in up market holiday places as a sort of little extra. if its your own then you keep it clean but not sure about it being somewhere else. (sorry to bring the tone down!)

MooMooFarm · 15/06/2011 14:04

Urgh. We used to live next door to an old (and very -em - big) couple who had one in their back garden. They would totter down to it in their dressing gowns, then sling them on the floor & jump in butt naked Shock.

I didn't try to see, honestly, but sometimes the gowns would come off just as I was opening/shutting the curtains and I would get an eyefull...

I also remember seeing an advert for a honeymoon hotel which had a hot tub on each private balcony. I suspect many people would think that would be lovely but my first and only thought was how many people would have had it away in the warm festering water and the likelihood of that water being changed between guests would be zero.

JustaSaga... That is so funny... Grin

Hubby won't use them. He used to be a lifeguard and had to test the water in the jacazzi. Basically, they end up full of traces of poo, wee and jizz. It put him off for life.

RubyGrace17 · 15/06/2011 15:23

We have one, as well as a pool. Personally, when I was younger I refused to get into any hot tub/swimming pool as I felt they were so unhygenic and couldn't put it to the back of my mind without feeling ill at the thought of getting in. Now I have children, I have little choice and just grin and bear it. It is worth it as they love when mummy goes in the pool with them :) Saying that, both are cleaned once a week professionally so that helps slightly with my germ phobia!

i would looooove a hot tub.

i would put bubble bath in it.

SeymoreButts · 15/06/2011 15:41

This has put me right off my tea and custard cream.

valiumredhead · 15/06/2011 16:03

Apparently they can be breeding grounds for Leigonaire's disease and all sorts of other germies! Blerk!

Aliensstolemychocolate · 15/06/2011 16:17

Air conditioning units are also breeding grounds for Legionaries disease and have been at the centre of many of the outbreaks over the last 10 years (causing fatalities)

SuePurblybilt · 15/06/2011 16:58

Hot tubs are the very tippimost of grimness. A house near us has one in the front garden. They are for 'fun' couples with crepey skin and perilous strapless bathing suits.

I can safely say I will never ever go in a hot tub Grin

lucysmum · 15/06/2011 17:07

I have a friend who is a public health doctor - she says they are full of germs that get into bits you would rather them not get into (particularly if you are female) due to force of water jets - and can cause really nasty internal infections. My kids thing I am a real kill joy as I won't let them use them. And they can apparently harbour Legionnaires Disease if not looked after properly.

Pube filter in pump[boke]

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/06/2011 17:46

lucysmum... YY... a bit like a bidet, I would think? The pool I go to has a jacuzzi next to it, it's always got at least three people in it and they always seem to be positionning themselves over the jets... yuck! Confused

(((chlorine))) Grin

peanutbutterkid · 15/06/2011 18:51

That's funny Lucy, re doctor's assessment, because I grew up with them and was in it almost daily in summer for many years, it got heated up to temp only once a day, my mom had a whole regime re the chemicals but basically I know she didn't use as much cleaning chemicals as some recommend (a lot less chlorine). I'm not aware that it caused any of us (or my friends) health problems. I have never had any infections down below, either, not even thrush.
