I've been doing some reading around the subject of near death experiences lately and am fascinated. Although I'm agnostic I believe the 'soul' lives in after physical death, aibu?

YANBU to have your beliefs.

Personally I think whatever someone believes will happen, will happen.

ThatVikRinA22 · 13/06/2011 21:53

yanbu

my sister died at age 42 in a car crash. she came to speak to my DS just after her funeral. she was happy, calm, she passed on a message for him to give to me, which i absolutely cherish to this day. DS was 12. (or 11? i cant work it out)

it gave me enormous comfort and still does.

FabbyChic · 13/06/2011 21:53

IN order to believe in life after death you surely have to believe in heaven and hell and god.

Im an athiest.

So neither exist for me.

sittinginthesun · 13/06/2011 21:53

I lost my Dad a few years ago. I have had a few weird experiences since, and can't think of any explanation other than some sort of afterlife, even though I'd never believed in anything before.

Mind you, my mum thinks it's rubbish, but my aunt reckons she can speak to the dead... Lots of debates about this in our family:)

BooyHoo · 13/06/2011 21:54

i think you are. sorry.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/06/2011 21:56

Not unreasonable, but misguided I'd say.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/06/2011 21:57

I don't think there's any rational basis for thinking there is an immortal soul that can exist after bodily death.

But belief isn't dependent on having a rational basis Grin

I declined an invite last week to go to a laydees night any how's my friend who was hosting this party told me a psychic was there, then proceeded to tell me all the crap this lady told them.
Am I the only one that thinks they talk bollocks and feed on the misery of others or are they harmless?

ohmyfucksy · 13/06/2011 22:00

YANBU. You'll never find out if you're wrong, will you?

ThatVikRinA22 · 13/06/2011 22:04

my sister didnt believe in anything, didnt stop her coming to speak to ds though. im not sure having a heaven or hell is a prerequisite to life after death.

and im hiding this thread now as ive just watched the thing on beeb 2 about assisted dying and im feeling quite raw and tearful, and reading a whole host of people pouring cold water on what my own experience of my sisters death was and how i cling on to that glimmer of hope that she is ok, happy and how she delivered a very personal message to me via my son, well to hear thats all a load of tosh is not doing me much good tonight.

so ill bow out now.

sittinginthesun · 13/06/2011 22:13

Vicarina - hugs if you are still here. Xxx

Everyone else - if it hadn't happened to me, I'm not sure I would believe it either bit, honestly, if it happens, you just have to believe. Aware that makes me sound a bit loopy, but in my case, it was unexpected, vivid and was verified later by someone else who had had exactly the same experience.

exoticfruits · 13/06/2011 22:14

You will either find out if you are right one day or you will never know!

MrsReasonable · 13/06/2011 23:33

Yes, YA, by definition, BU.

It's a nice, comforting thought, but it's not reasonable or rational.

tiptoptally · 13/06/2011 23:42

Having experienced 'death' (ie, heart stopped, breathing stopped) and experiencing the life flashing before your eyes, tunnel with light, voice talking to you etc, i can say hand on heart these expereiences ARE real. Whether they are natural reactions of the body when it's in extreme crisis, or whether it's the soul going elsewhere, I don't know - each to their own beliefs. All I know is these things HAPPENED and it was a physical expereience I remember as clear as day 20 years on.

Pandemoniaa · 13/06/2011 23:49

IN order to believe in life after death you surely have to believe in heaven and hell and god.

No you don't. It's never been necessary to sign up to Christian beliefs in order to believe that there's more to death than the mere fact of it.

Kallista · 14/06/2011 00:12

YANBU.
I've had certain experiences, so have some colleagues + friends, which make me believe in an afterlife.

I think it's important to live a good life and be a decent person when alive so that your contribution to the world is a positive one.
So many cultures / religions have quite similar beliefs regarding life after death.
My Filippino friends are strict Catholics yet also have strong beliefs in spirits which is interesting.
Vicarina - i think your experience is very reassuring, thank you for sharing it.

sunshinelifeisgood · 14/06/2011 00:13

yanbu, I firmly believe in life after death. You do not have to believe in heaven and hell and god. You just have to have your own personal beliefs. My dm died a long time ago and I have called on her many a time and she has come through for me. When her ds died last year, my uncle swore on his life that as they brought her coffin through he saw my dm smiling and waving.
The night my mum died I smelt her perfume and heard her call my name as clear as my dd would call it now.

bruffin · 14/06/2011 00:34

I don't believe there are genuine psychics or mediums ,but my daughter said some very strange things when she was 2 or3.

We were on the train we often got but for some reason looking out the window and saw the cemetary, which I had not noticed before as I tend to sit the other side.
My DD suddenly started saying
"that is where they put dead people"

I know she had never been to a cemetary

She then started talking about "when she lived before" she had got married and a policeman had killed with a big knife.
There was a woman sitting close by on the train and I could tell she was listening to this odd conversation by the look on her face.
The a few days later she said when she had lived before her grandad had called her gingernut.

She only had one grandad that she had met and he was greek and wouldn't have used words like gingernut which to me suggests a redhead. She was blonde in those days.

She is 13 now and has no memory of this at all. It is very weird

sittinginthesun · 14/06/2011 08:44

My friend, who is the biggest sceptic ever, has a little boy who would regularly talk about his previous life in America. He talked about the boat there, his wife, the name of the road he lived on. He was only two at the time.

Morloth · 14/06/2011 08:50

YANBU, I have no idea what happens next (and am suspicious of anyone who claims they do).

I figure I will find out when I get there. I can't avoid it, so I don't worry about it.

GabbyLoggon · 14/06/2011 09:48

ORGANIC you can only have FAITH in life after death. There is never going to be proof.

GiveMeStrength2day · 14/06/2011 10:25

I almost NEED to believe in life after death. I can't get my head around somebody dying and then everything that made them that person just goes. I mean, they're there one minute and the next gone, that's it. Nope, can't reconcile that one!

I do tend to overthink things and I'm not sure it's a good thing as, although death is inevitable for us all, the whole idea of it freaks me out!

I also need my late Dad to be able to hear my mutterings about the flipping mess he left his affairs in! Smile

pumpernickel10 · 14/06/2011 10:47

YANBU if it helps you but YABU to believe in something where theres no proof.
I am a proof kind of person I want evidence. As pand said to believe in life after death you have to believe in heaven and hell and your agnostic.
I don't believe in god as theres no proof he exists or jesus,I think the Bible is a story book, any evidence like the Turin shroud or the Spear of destiny turned out to be not from christs time,so they were fake, now the Egyptians were here well before christ and theres evidence all over Egypt, same with the Romans and Greeks.
Until I see if with my own eyes then I won't believe and I do believe when your dead your dead. Sad I know and I wish my mom was in heaven but shes not sadly and I am not going to see her when I die, however much I try and believe.

WentworthMillerMad · 14/06/2011 10:47

Same as bruffin. When my son was 2 he used to talk about his 'grandpa bee' who visited him every night. Not scary but he named the street he lived on and how he was so sad because his baby had died because he has too much water on his brain. 'grandpa bee' had been killed in the war!

He was 2 at the time and now has no memory of this at all. Odd!

pumpernickel10 · 14/06/2011 10:49

I remember when mom passed away and I kept dreaming of her,a spiritual friend said shes visiting you through your dreams,I questioned this person and said how can she visit me through dreams but no real life? could not answer me.
