(Warning judgeypants well and truly applied) to think that missing school because of a pop concert is totally out of order

Dd has just mentioned in passing that one of her friends wasn't at school today because she went to the Summertime Ball concert in London. Apparently she missed the train this morning and so didn't make it to school. I have a number of v judgey issues with this:

  1. Attending a concert on a school night
  2. Missing a train that is needed to get her to school - she is 13. She hasn't missed the train, the adults she was with have failed to ensure she caught it.
  3. Missing a full day of school - there are lots of trains - why on earth didn't she get a later one and still make it to school.

If an employee did this I would be hugely pissed off with them. Where on earth have this girl's parents got the idea that missing the whole day because of this is at all ok?

Or am I being a miserable sourpuss judgeypants cow?

I am taking my 14year old out of school next week for one day (with permission) to attend a family party (yes, annoyingly on a Tuesday) four hours train journey away. I think it is important she goes, we all love her, it will matter to the party host that she is there, and sometimes, school can take a back seat. So no, I don't think it is too dreadful this 13year old missed a day of school.

Miserable sourpuss Im afraid Wink

Why do you even care? It's one day of school for a 13 year old. Some parents make too much fuss about school- let's be honest, some DC truant all the time, are allowed off sick for no reason, don't do homework. More important she has loving parents who help her with homework, invest in her emotional well being and occassionally cut her some slack for being a good kid.

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 13/06/2011 19:19

I'd rate surfing as being more enriching than JLS, lalaonglegs Wink

LadyBeagleEyes · 13/06/2011 19:20

I missed a day off school when I was about 16 because I queued up all night to see Led Zeppelin.
I remember that clearly, but don't remember what we we were studying at the time.
I also had an excellent attendance record.

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 13/06/2011 19:21

Now Led Zep - THAT's the proper stuff

Rainydaze · 13/06/2011 19:21

Hulababy, because it's truanting, isn't it? Taking time off school for no good reason, such as medical appointment, is truanting, surely?

That wouldn't wash with an older person who failed to turn up to work would it?

She's not an older person and she's not at work. She's a 13yr old school child.

Anyway, many workers would be able to book the following day off.

' tbh I'm not really buying the once in a lifetime memories thing '....oh, erm, have you never been to a concert that goes down as 'remember for the rest of your life' moment?

I'm quite jealous of her actually, I was barley aloud to listen to 'pop' music at her age (religious upbringing)....never mind be able to go to a concert!!

Hulababy · 13/06/2011 19:23

Why is it truanting? Surely it is no more truanting than a holiday? Many people have term time holidays and this is not illgal either.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 13/06/2011 19:24

Who is Robert Plant? Have I missed out on my lust-o-meter?

Rainydaze · 13/06/2011 19:25

I agree, it's no more truanting than a holiday in term-time.

baguettecut · 13/06/2011 19:25

Don't sweat the small stuff, op.

Rainydaze · 13/06/2011 19:26

So, what could be classed as truanting? I'm not being awkward, by the way. I just don't understand where the boundries are.

therealmrsbeckham · 13/06/2011 19:26

It's not truanting - I have permission from the school to take DD out for the day. If the head teacher is fine about it what the bloody hell does it have to do with anybody else?

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 13/06/2011 19:26

Who is Robert Plant??????

You have more than missed out Pinot

PhyllisDiller · 13/06/2011 19:26

you see...missing school and meeting Robert Plan. That is the stuff that memories are made of. Would have probably been worth getting expelled for quite frankly.

WowOoo · 13/06/2011 19:26

I know it was wrong but I missed work many many years ago to go to Glastonbury. Have never forgotten it.

As long as she doesn't do it all the time, it's OK by me. I wasn't allowed to go to a concert on a school day. My mother was a meanie.

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 13/06/2011 19:28

Robert Plant is the exception to the rule
He is a legend
JLS are Just Like Shit, and here today gone tomorrow

Northernlurker · 13/06/2011 19:28

Ah well I don't do term time holidays either you see - only 1/2 day once to travel 5 hours to fil's 60th birthday party and time for funerals.

I suspect I would still be wearing low slung judgey bloomers if the plan had always been to take today off. It's the fact that it was 'planned' for her to be back and then they didn't make it happen which is riling me a bit and causing the donning of super tight and bossy judgey pants with extra strong judging elastic....Grin

Awomancalledhorse · 13/06/2011 19:28

I missed a day of school to go see Michael Jackson in concert. T'was worth it!

although I don't get why she was unable to get a later train??

Portofino · 13/06/2011 19:29

I used to develop an illness every year when Wimbledon was on as a teenager - I obviously caught it from my friend as she always had the same thing Grin We still passed all our exams and went on to be upstanding members of the community. It's none of your fecking business basically!
