Basically, I had a thread here last week. I informed the secretary at school that I am taking the full year of mat leave and so going back at Christmas not September. My head of department took the hump as I hadn't told her first. I have apologised about this to her and am meeting her next week as she wants to talk about it. She has a new job so won't be my head when I go back anyway.

Today she has emailed next years' timetable and I feel I have been penalised for my decision to take the year off. Basically, I have been given set 9 in both year 10 and year 11, and no a level classes. My hod has told me if I had gone back in September I would have had a level, but as I am not she has had to gave it to someone else. I have always taught a level, ever since I was an nqt, and have always had excellent results.

As for ks4, generally it works that if you have a higher set y10 you get a lower set y11, or vice versa, just for balance, but in my case i have been given 2 set 9s. I like teaching this ability level but am just concerned about the lack of balannce (having two set 1s could be equally hard because of the increased marking, bigger class size, etc).

I realise this might be because my tt is going to be taught by supply for the first term and I am only going to be there for 2 terms before I will have a new tt, but I just feel as if innate been penalised for having a baby- . I know my jobis to teach the children i have put in front of me, and i will do so, but in my school this timetable combo would be recognised as a raw deal. I just feel as if I am going to spend the rest of my mat lEave dreading going back to work!

Can someone help me snap out of this? Aibu?

When did you let the school know your decision to come back in Dec?

If it was after March they would have had to sort staffing for their April budget - it might have been up for discussion if you'd let them know earlier and talked to your HOD about your plans. Because you told the secretary and not your line manager (at first) it looks a bit like you aren't bothered... that may have contributed to their decision making.

(SC29: most people can't afford to take the whole year so schools don't 'assume' that staff will be off that long)

PS Have you filled in the right forms and let them know in writing that you are coming back? I had a teacher resign by email recently and HR wouldn't accept it - now she has to stay an extra half term to work out her notice.

Sorry, but YABU. I think the HOD is being U too, but towards the kids in those lower sets who will be swap teachers mid-term, not to you (I agree with whoever said that higher set kids cope better with change, but have yet to meet a HOD who would risk grades in that way sadly).

You're presumably employed as 'a teacher'. Your timetable changes every year. Some years it'll be great. Other years not so great. Sometimes the timetables that look great on paper are awful in practice and vice versa. But we all just suck up whatever we're timetabled for and get on with it (don't we? Isn't that part of the job? Wouldn't you be teaching in sixth form college if it was only A-Level you're interested in?)

My only suggestion is to stop stressing about work. Enjoy your time off. Enjoy being with LO. In December, get in touch with the cover teacher and find out exactly what s/he's been doing with your new classes. See if you can arrange a few lessons where you team teach so that you get to know them. Then get on with being a brilliant teacher for those sets. You'll get the A-Level group next year - and you'll probably have them for the whole two years so you can shape them how you want them Smile

Cross posts. Sorry. Enjoy those seven months Grin

At least you'll have less marking with your lower sets...
