To think it's odious to thank 'God' when you win a (celebrity) award?

I don't get celebrity acceptance speeches. Why do they always thank God?

I watched the MTV movie awards and a young girl of 8 years old won an award for best somethinig-or-other. She started her speech by saying, "First, I'd like to thank God". And everyone whooped and hollered like they were at the second coming.

Serena and Venus Williams do the same thing. A lot of celebrities do it too. Specially, ironically, hip hop artists. It's just so bloody odd.

Why do they do this?

Frankly, it just adds them to my shitlist of Scientologists and other total eejits.

Your thoughts.

There is no colour when it comes to invoking God. Look at Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman. i used cultural references to illustrate my point. If you choose so see it through a racial filter, that's up to your own prejudices.

And please - sod off with Insha'llah. It doesn't belong in our country.

What? Are you serious?!

Folks looking for racism on MN - here it is.

Tyr · 12/06/2011 00:33

"And please - sod off with Insha'llah. It doesn't belong in our country."

Are you sure about that Vagabond?

DontCallMePeanut · 12/06/2011 00:38

"And please - sod off with Insha'llah. It doesn't belong in our country."

Erm, sorry? I'm an atheist, yet I've respected (although not agreeed with) your talk of God for this thread.

Insha'allah belongs wherever someone believes in it. Be that Afghanistan, England or Narnia.

Now please. Fuck off, kindly... I don't like racism...

TheNightNurse · 12/06/2011 00:41

OOOOooohhh! Vagabond!

Dear oh dear...

spiderslegs · 12/06/2011 00:42

OP - agreed - just a bunch of God apologists.

I am, therefore, I AM.

I have suceeded.

Ergo - I AM BLESSED. God has looked kindly upon me.

Vagabond · 12/06/2011 00:47

Tyr. Yes I'm quite sure.

Insha'lla means "god-willing"

I lived in the Middle East for 15 years so I'm used to it. Are you?

Imagine calling BT to fix your phone line and they tell you that Insh'alla a technician will be there next week. Imagine calling DHL for your urgent package only to be told that Insha'lla it will be there today. And it never is.

God does NOT ordain these things. Imagine John Lewis delaying your order because of Insha'llah. it's almost hilarious. Their God must be soooo busy.

I know what Inshallah means. I just didn't know what you meant.
Thanks for clarifying... (confused).

OP - YANBU - Though I do think it's bit extreme to keep your marriage secret but up to you. Sounds more trouble that it's worth.

Tyr · 12/06/2011 00:57

Vagabond, thank you for the translation although superfluous to requirements.
As for belonging in "our country," would I be correct in surmising that "your God" is of similarly middle-eastern origins. Wouldn't happen to be known by an Hebrew or Aramaic name, would he/she/it?
If, on the contrary, "your God" is actually of Western origins, eg Wotan, Thor, or whatever, did you bring him to the Middle East with you?
I know someone who has spent 15 years in Ireland and still can't pronounce the place names.

TheNightNurse · 12/06/2011 01:07

Haha, just realised what I did.

What a twat.

Vagabond · 12/06/2011 01:10

Jeez, I'm not anything. Not baptised, not anything. I'm just who I am with my own beliefs which are actually rather confused.

I just don't believe in an audience whooping and hollering for an over-valued celebrity who has invoked God to get said applause. It implies that God rewards and I don't believe in that.

That's for the Queen.

Appreciate that you may feel yourself to be the judge of what does and doesn't belong in this country but be aware it makes you sound like a bigoted idiot.

AnyFuleKno · 12/06/2011 10:16

lol night nurse...

meditrina · 12/06/2011 10:34

Do you include rap artists like MC Hammer? Who says "MC" stands for "Man of Christ" and who also works as a pastor, particularly in youth and prison ministry?

I don't see why Christians should not acknowledge Christ in any or every part of their life (Parable of Talents is springing to mind in terms of success).
