than give it a worming tablet?

I have scratches all over my abdomen where the little shit darling tried to escape.

So.... anybody had to deal with anything worse when it comes to felines?

My cat won't even do the liquid on the back of the neck wormer/flea treatment without a mega fight! The rest of the time she is the most peaceful placid thing you could ever wish to meet!

Worral my DH is actually crying with laughter at your post!

Teaching it Latin. That's more difficult than giving it a worming tablet.

If you ask a silly question . . .

midori1999 · 12/06/2011 20:47

We just wrap whatever pill the cats need to take in a small piece of bacon (too large and they chew it too much then spit out) and feed it like a treat. Or, crush the tablet and mix with a tiny bit of wet food.

The dogs, well, they eat worming tablets as they are, just like a treat.

Brushing one of the cats, however, is quite a different story altogether...

Worral - so true !

Sadly our cats are now in the great mouse hunting ground in the sky , but we now have a dog - the first time I had to give her worming tablet I was dreading it based on experinces with the cats - but how true with dog - wrap it in ham and throw !

We moved house about a year ago, to an old house, and our cat having never seen a chimney thought the first thing to do would be to clamber up. Couldn't get him down for love nor money, he just went further up. We lost him for about a week, the house has an extensive chimney system. We also had an old aga we were not using as it was to be ripped out. Later that week we had men coming to remove the aga. They unfortunately had the scare of there lives when on removing the flu cover out shot a dusty black once grey cat, which covered the house in coal dust and scratched the poor removal men to shreds when they tried to catch him to check and see if he was ok? Why i have no idea?
On releasing him he disappeared outside, they finished up and left, to my surprise they were back an hour later. The cat had been asleep in the van, had woken up and reeked havoc as they were driving. I was rather sheepish and apologized a lot.
On waking and having breakfast the next morning there was a knock on the door. Our next door neighbour, who lives about an hour away was standing there with our grey cat, he explained that he believed our cat must have let himself in through his open kitchen window and was sitting watching his hamster and canaries in the living room, he'd only noticed him when he'd sat down to watch Breakfast news. Again i apologized a lot. Our cat now has a reputation in our hamlet and before long i think he will earn himself an asbo. He has done so much in a year to our friends and neighbours that sometimes i wonder were i have gone so wrong?

Love it OSD!!

When we moved house - and therefore vets - we went in and requested profender - the wormer that you put on the back of a cat's neck. The vet said it was nonsense that we couldn't worm the cat; we explained he wouldn't take tablets and because he hunts we couldn't hide it in food because hewould happily have takeaway from the garden. The vet decided to demonstrate how to worm a cat.

There were gauntlets, vet, animal nurse, blood (human), struggling, yowling, hissing, and 15 minutes later we left with a packet of profender and an otherwise un-wormed cat.

That stuff is wonderful - but should be avoided if you're pregnant!

MadameDeathStare
Deathcat1 reminded me of this cat:

Are they related? :o

take a small piece of chicken breast, cut a slit, insert pill and roll meat around to cover it. Put in bowl on its own, let cat inhale it down (or is that just my cat?) then follow up swiftly with another couple of chicken bits before puss smells a rat and spits it out. I use Drontal and the instructions say to do this if you have to as a second best to just getting the cat to swallow it.

Kallista · 12/06/2011 22:47

My cat had pneumonia - i had to give her 8 pills a day or she'd have died. So: - sit on sofa. Grip cat between your knees. Hold tablet in R hand + grip both sides of cat's jaw with L hand to open it (nose should be pointing to ceiling).
With R hand: drop tablet in mouth then cover nose.
Use L hand to hold mouth shut + tickle throat. Cat should swallow pill. Hold for couple seconds but don't suffocate kitty.
Then take cat to kitchen + give it a treat.
Monitor to ensure tablet stays down.

Spuddybean · 12/06/2011 22:59

OSD - my cat used to go in the neighbours catflaps/windows at night and steal hairbands/pee on their cookers/ eat their food and bite their cats! i bought all the neighbours water pistols!

FreudianSlipper · 12/06/2011 23:02

to comb with one of those rubber brushes made for cats

fur everywhere (he has thick short fur), my cat is so placid but he hissed, bite me and then gave me a warning he was about to do something he may regret so i let him run off Shock

will have to do it all again soon as he is leaving fur all everywhere

microserf · 12/06/2011 23:05

ours got put on anti depressants - yes, really. they made him foam at the mouth, and i nearly lost a limb trying to get them into him, i still have the scars - literally.

after 3 days of this, we made a silent bargain. he stopped exhibiting the anxiety behaviours (licking his fur until his skin was raw) that made the medication necessary, and i would stop giving him the tablets. he seems to have worked it out, as things were fine after that.

This thread is genius! I have actual tears of laughter running down my face....

Not a cat, but one of my dogs.

Warning - this tale is not one of bloodshed, but one of cunning.

My lovely black lab, Jill, is the world's most cunning dog (tm). Possibly the only cunning lab.

Once she got to about 5 years old she cottoned on and to give her tablets for worming got massively more complicated.

  1. Buy massively expensive worming tablets, nearly pass out at cost.
  2. Call dogs in a 'hey, this is your lucky day - look at this' type manner.
  3. Wrap tablet in cheap ham and toss to dogs.
  4. One dog happily eats tablet and wanders off for a sleep.
  5. Jill looks at the ham. She looks away. She appears to be mentally scoring this as 1/10.
  6. Open fridge and remove nice ham. Place ham around tablet.
  7. Jill eats ham. Wanders off for a sleep.
  8. Turn around to put on kettle and nearly break neck slipping on tablet.
  9. Coat tablet in butter and pop in Jill's mouth.
10. Tablet is returned sans butter. Now soggy. 11. Recoat tablet in butter , pop back in mouth, tickle throat until swallow. 12. Head back to kitchen for brew. 13. Find tablet on rug, now beyond soggy and towards slimy. 14. Open fridge and get out pate. 15. Smooth pate around tablet, corner Jill in downstairs loo. 16. Appears to have swallowed. 17. Wait for 5 minutes in room before release. 18. Sigh contentedly and go back for brew. 19. Hour later need a wee. Go to loo. Find tablet left outside door. 20. Call for reinforcements. 21. Child A cuddles dog. 22. Child B tickles dogs throat. 23. Tablet that is now more the texture of sodden weetabix is re-wrapped in pate. 24. Am ashamed to say I now put my hand over her nose until swallow. 25. Check mouth for any sign 26. Leave in smallest room for half an hour. 27. If room is still clear, release. 28. Pour v. large glass of Sauv. Blanc.

I have a feeling I have made this difficult for myself...

Having for years struggled with worraliberty's cat-pill technique, we discovered the following method- wrap in a towel like a baby and clamp firmly under arm, prise oven jaws, chuck in tablet then a quick kiss on the nose whilest firmly clamping jaws shut again.
Somehow the shock of being kissed on the nose makes my huge, part-feral beast of a cat swallow
