To be upset that the British Museum is closing its library

The public library at the British Museum is fantastic.

They have a children's library and children's backpacks and trails. They also have thousands of adult books, all freely available to any visitor 7 days a week.

I am really sad that this service is to close.

Plus, I admit I don't work for the BL so I can't be sure ... but why couldn't they take books from another library and make them available to children? I imagine that at some point in history someone was saying 'oh, the BM couldn't possibly make its books available to children', too! I really hope somewhere in London can take the books and equipment in and make a little library of it so you could go there after seeing the museum ... I don't know if it will happen but there's no reason it shouldn't as far as I can see.

"They have also announced that the public don't need a library as all information is available on the Web nowadays"

bollox, bollox, bollox, :(

LRD - well maybe they could but then it wouldn't be a public library at the British Museum would it? And that's really what is attractive and valuable about it.

I like and value taking my children to the BM and its library - because they are interested in the exhibits there.

Why not? Confused

People sometimes have to do new things. I think it is crap they are closing it at the BM, but keeping the books available somewhere else sounds like the least bad option. Maybe not the BL (though they are closely related so perhaps could afford to run it, I don't know), but not inevitably not the BL.

I'm sure there was a time when the BM didn't have a library for children either, and I bet people said you 'couldn't' give children books about the exhibits too. People are far too keen to restrict where and what children get to read.
