Cocoflower · 07/06/2011 21:15

There is much talk on MN about modern feminisim.

Its not been something I have ever given much thought about until now.

So can I ask;what exactly is and isn't modern feminisim?

Another thread sybil

Nothing on this one.

diabolo · 07/06/2011 21:43

I'm not cross by the way - just not a "feminist".

I'm happy just being me.

HerBeX · 07/06/2011 21:43

I think Diabolo, you are not a bad feminist, you are just not a feminist. Smile

It's like me saying I'm a bad muslim. I'm not. I'm just not a muslim.

My sadly departed Dad was once screamed at because he called a woman 'dear'. He never forgot it.

My own very simple definition is this;

A woman should be allowed to choose her own path in life without fear of ridicule, violence, persecution or obstruction from either sex.

That means ALL walks of life from the sciences to burlesque dancing. So long as it is HER choice.

AyeRobot · 07/06/2011 21:45

Btw, this thread is going to really piss off TheFlyingOnion.

HerBeX · 07/06/2011 21:46

I don't agree that women (or men) should be able to pursue any walk of life they want.

What if s/he wants to be a slave trader?

seeker · 07/06/2011 21:47

"But how about simple things like a man holding a door open for you- DH considers this polite and gentlemanly but stopped doing this now after a woman was said how "dare you think as a woman I cant open a door myself".

This didn;t actually happen, you know. It's like banning Christmas. An urban myth perpetuated to discredit peopel who dare to challenge the startus quo.

HerBeX · 07/06/2011 21:47

Who is theflyingonion again?

HerBeX · 07/06/2011 21:48

Yes why is this deep-rooted belief that feminists don't like sex, so strong?

Is it because we don't like sex with people who aren't very good at it? I like it with those who are...

Psammead · 07/06/2011 21:48

Without having read others responses, modern feminism for me is the aim to be considered as valid as any man with regard to my thoughts, feelings, work and needs.

seeker · 07/06/2011 21:48

Modern feminism is feminism without the political drive, philosophical analysis and collective ambition.

Cocoflower · 07/06/2011 21:49

It happened. I had no idea this was a 'myth' as I dont really go near the feminism threads hence why I started to get intruiged, sorry.

LOL seeker, interesting.

How do you define "modern"?

Is it post-Nuts?

diabolo · 07/06/2011 21:50

I have never said that feminists don't enjoy sex. But clearly, the one on the other thread who I referred to pages ago, didn't. That was ONE woman who seemed to hate all men. I'm sure she wouldn't have enjoyed sex with anybody. Even George Clooney or Barack Obama.

Cocoflower · 07/06/2011 21:52

So...

In people's own personal day-to-day life to you feel you are or have faced challenges due to being a woman? If so, what?

By challenges I mean gender discrimination, sexism, inequality etc

MillyR · 07/06/2011 21:55

I don't think the example given by your DH is THE myth OP.

The actual myth is this:

An elderly gentleman (often the person's friend's neighbour, father, Great Uncle) holds a door open for a young woman with short hair wearing trousers. The young woman tells the man he doesn't have to hold the door open for her because she is a lady. The elderly man then says that he is not holding the door open for her because she is a lady, but because he is a gentleman.

I suspect this elderly gentleman lives with the hitcher with the missing thumb, the hookman and the happy hooker. But if I had a tenner for every person who claims their friend knows him...

Please be kind ...

I would like to do my job without reference to the fact I'm a woman or a mother. I want to be allowed to 'be' a woman/mother without either being a dirty word. And I want my daughter to grow up free up free from sexual violence, prejudice and harassment because she's female.

FWIW I've learnt so much from the feminism threads and it's my favourite section on MN.

Suncottage · 07/06/2011 21:57

Cocoflower

Well done for asking the question. I appreciate it.

I will dig out my dog eared copy of Haralambos. Smile
