To go to todays Slutwalk in Glasgow?

So, I'm not sure if anyone here has heard of this.

Today a protest is being held in Glasgow's George Square, to protest that women should be able to wear what they wish without fear of assault.

It was sparked by a Canadian police officer claiming that women would stop being raped if stopped dressing like sluts! Disgusting isn't it?

So today there will be thousands of women dressed slutty in Glasgow's city centre.

Does everyone think this is the right way to approach this and if you're from Glasgow will you be attending?

I think you'd probably get more response on the 'feminist' board, Strawberry.

I really only wanted a quick reply to see if anyone thought going to this was worth it as I was really in 2 minds about it.

Think I will probably leave going after all, especially since my FB has suddenly been flooded with guys heading into town to go to the Square...

Thanks though LyingWitch.

I often wonder if those with a seemingly academic understanding of sexual assault have ever been to a bar/club. I was wearing jeans, but there are jeans and then there are jeans. Not all denim is equal.

YY... it sounds like it's considered a 'meat market'. Not the objective at all. :(

The best thing would be for all the women to find something else to do and leave the pervy men standing in the rain waiting for them to parade by.

StrawberryMewMew · 04/06/2011 13:23

LyingWitch I think that's a great idea!

The reason it's called slutwalk I imagine is because that is the word the police officer used.

I agree with the sentiment but not really the means as well. I guess a lot of people wont "get it".

On the harrassment/assault comment, I have come to the conclusion that the real thing that attracts unwanted attention / predators is being a female between the rough ages of puberty and menopause. Schoolgirls in school uniform get harrassed, catcalled and assaulted, all the way up to 45 year old women on the tube in business attire. The risk factor is being a female of childbearing years and unfortunately that is nigh on impossible to disguise. Wearing head to toe coverings, for example, also points out that you are female and doesn't seem to protect from this type of behaviour.

it's the behaviour of predatory men and men who think it is their right to pass comment on passing women that are the problem.

Do you know what I think is really bizarre though, Strawberry... I'd say without exception, each of those pervy men has a sister or mother and they'd be outraged if their loved female relation was subjected to the same behaviour that they happily display to any other woman they feel like degrading.

Not all men do this, I know, but such double standards from the ones who do.

StrawberryMewMew · 04/06/2011 13:30

The one friend I am annoyed at just now for going has a Fianceé!

There are double standards, and most of those men would break other mens teeth for treating their female relatives like they treat other women.
