before I lose the will to live. They are playing,it's hot but it consists of about 6 or 7 kids under 7 shrieking like they are being slayed for hours. The thought of this for the summer is making me want to cry. I know I'm being u but don't their parents ever say stop?!! I don't remember doing it,I would have got the death stare if I was screaming....and my baby is due in 4 weeks & then I'll have another screamer.......I really need to sleep, can you tell?

Katvond, you seem to have to taken my thread a bit too literally,I'm certainly not bitter & I'm not about to parent them. Being neighbours is give & take,I close my windows & have a moan on a website,I'm not going to tell other peoples children off fgs.

If someone knocked on the door to object to my DD playing outside on a sunny evening then yes I'd tell them where to go. Unless these kids are shouting and swearing I can't see what the problem is. Maybe my stress levels are lower than most. I'm not having a go OP but I'm just telling you as a mother to be what to expect.

katvond · 03/06/2011 20:11

Some kids are out of control and can be nightmares but never blame the kids, they don't know any different.
Now OP smile your about to be a mother it's going to be wonderful.

YANBU. One of the disadvantages of living in flats is everyone has to be more aware of the impact of their lives on other people. To their parents it may just be kids letting off steam, but constant shrieking from 6 children who are old enough to be told to stop is not acceptable when you live in a flat. Having children doesn't release people from basic courtesy to their neighbours.

toastandmarmiterocks · 03/06/2011 20:13

Well I know you are not my neighbour because she is a miserable old bag who has spent all day shouting and banging with a broom for my DDs to "shut up". She shouted at my 2 year old to stop playing on the slide. Sad I feel utterly sick to my stomach because I feel harrassed by her. My girls have been playing in the garden but they were in by 6.30pm. I could hear her shouting "shut up and fuck off". She also left our shared front door open on purpose because my sister came round and left her folded buggy in the hallway. She has done this before, in the hope it will get nicked. In my dodgy area of London I'm surprised it didn't go.
Sorry, went off on one there. I completely understand how annoying neighbours can be but if you want complete silence then go and live in the middle of nowhere or come on here and have a rant but shouting abuse at little children achieves nothing (OP that last bit wasn't directed at you obviously!).

Tigerbomb · 03/06/2011 20:17

YANBU We have something similar, every night in the summer the children from two doors up are shouting and screaming until 9 - 10 ish and their parents never tell them to keep it down.

Neighbours on both sides have put their houses up for sale. One I know is because they are fed up of the noise

Yukana · 03/06/2011 20:17

I don't blame you, Icelolly.

Personally I find babies/toddlers crying or whining much more bearable than 5+ year olds screaming. Recently there was a large group of children outside screaming their lungs out whilst running around after each other in the street, which made me cringe at the level of ear-piercing noise.

I imagine it's quite hard to listen to especially on a hot day and whilst pregnant. Plus some days you find this sort of thing easier to deal with than others. :)

frankie3 · 03/06/2011 20:18

I have just told the children next door to be quiet! There were four of them just screaming on the top of their voices, so noisy I just saw their mum close her back door and windows so she did not have to hear it. Aged 10 so not young toddlers.

Was I BU?

sleepingsowell · 03/06/2011 20:23

frankie - YANBU specially if their own mum shut doors etc so as not to hear it!

Yes children have the right to play and be children, but that doesn't mean ALL noise they ever make has to be ok. It is right that if they are totally disturbing other people that they are told to moderate their noise!

thefirstMrsDeVere · 03/06/2011 20:27

YANBU because you are very pregnant and therfore incapable of being unreasonable.

They should all be quiet and let you have a nice rest.
And bring you flowers
And rub your feet

Smile

Ask me in a few months and I will say YABU let the poor kids have some fun!
But for now - YADNBU Grin

Ephiny · 03/06/2011 20:36

YANBU, we have similar noise levels as lots of the neighbours have kids. I know it's just part of living in a community, they're just doing what kids do etc etc, and I wouldn't actually complain to the parents or shout at the children. But I do find it hard to hear. On some level screaming just sounds like pain or fear or distress to me, even when I know it's just play, and it's difficult to ignore or relax when it's going on.

I recommend retreating to the quietest room in the house and putting on some headphones to listen to relaxing music of your choice!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/06/2011 20:48

no you werent frankie3 - if children are screaming so much that their own parents cant bear it then the parents should shush them down a bit. Sunny evenings are for everyone not just for uncontrolled children.

ElizabethDarcy · 03/06/2011 21:07

There is kids 'having loud, happy fun' and then there's 'screaming and out of hand noise pollution'... and parents need to step in for the latter. Children need to learn about being considerate of others, this is a good exercise to do so.

Ormirian · 03/06/2011 21:15

YANBU. No need for constant screaming. My neighbour told my youngest to stop screaming yesterday afternoon because he was being a chimp. Chimps are very loud. Apparently. I didn't blame the neighbour at all - I was about to do the same but he beat me to it.

fairydoll · 03/06/2011 22:11

Um it's called playing.YABU and miserable!
