Non-toxic crayons: good to eat, right?

Apologies for using AIBU for this but wanted a swift response!

Just gave DS (13mo) some paper and non-toxic crayons to play with, turned my back for 20 seconds and he begins munching on the red crayon with an air of apparent enjoyment. He has scoffed a good inch of crayon. Should I be worried??

Not at all. Just don't be too surprised when his nappy is a rather strange colour tomorrow - its wax and can't be digested

Maybe I can look on it as an opportunity to track exactly how long it takes for food to pass through my son's digestive system!

Non-toxic Crayons are made from wax (animal,vegetable or mineral) which will pass through his system undigested, and food-grade dye/colourings.

If he's allergic or intolerant to the dye then you might get symptoms such as gastroenteritis, wheeziness, skin rash. These reactions are very rare though.

Keep an eye on him, don't bother with NHS direct as they will advise to take him to Docs/A&E; it's their default response to everything and be prepared for some strange nappies over the next couple of days

We had a little boy come over to play once and I was nervous because his mother said he had quite a lot of allergies. We gave him some Babybels and he ate the whole thing - waxy red skin as well. He was fine!

Apparently it takes 7 hours for red wax to pass through DS's system.
