AIBU?

When are you going to upgrade your tv?

The man next door asked us this earlier this evening. They've just bought a new massive tv.

We have a tv that's pretty big in my opinion (around 40 inches I guess and HD and everything).

AIBU to just not get why a really massive tv is essential? If I was going to splurge the best part of a grand on something it certainly wouldn't be a tv.

32 inchs suits us fine. Some people are just so flashy, as long as I can see it and the pictures clear, what do I care ?

I think there will soon be a market for retro TV screens. I hate flat screens and we will sadly have to replace our decade old TV because it keeps cutting out on sound and popping like Rice Krispies at times. 'And the winner is......crackle crackle crackle..' Very annoying.

Slarty he wasn't boasting. He knows that if we wanted one we could buy one (lucky I know but we're better off than them). He actually can't understand why we hadn't upgraded.

He compared it to a (more expensive) table we bought recently and said 'well how much did that cost?'. My mum gave us the money (and specifed she wanted us to spend it on a 'thing'. Again, I know we're lucky). He could understand why I'd spend money on a dining table but not on a bigger tv.

I know people have different priorities but I just don't get it!

Btw I feel the need to point out I'm not rediculously spoilt. My mum has reached the stage where she's decided she doesn't want the taxman to get her money so is putting on serious pressure.

Up until last year I had a 32" CRT TV. Weighed a ton (well 10 and a half stone actually) and no chance of it being knocked over and didnt have to worry about DD throwing something at the screen.

It broke though, so was replaced with a 32" LCD or plasma... I dunno the difference TBH. I now worry DD will knock it over or throw something at it and damage the stuff in the screen.

32" is more the adequate for me. Whenever I visit someone with a 42"+ I feel like I'm at the cinema!

We exchanged a 32" CRT for a flat screen 32" 2 years ago - we didn't need bigger and we only 'upgraded' (picture no different at all as they were both Sony) so that it didn't threaten to fall over when we played wii.

We have a 32inch CRT - and will be keeping it until DS is old enough to a)wash it by spitting on the screen and b) hit it in moments of high excitement.

26" crt fattie

dh picked it up for a fiver off ebay when our old one broke!

We only have freeview and don't watch much tv tbh

We may upgrade when dd is a bit older and more sensible as ds (9) keeps nagging us but it's not a priority.

we will get a new one when the old ones 'dies' - i do not understand why people change something that works for another of the same (but different if you get me)

I agree, mine is only getting replaced when it dies, however it hasn't got it's original remote and is a funny make and model so it's really difficult to find a universal remote that works - we have to use a remote from an ancient tv of MIL's which has no back on it so the batteries keep falling out (and yet it works even though it's a completely different model?!?)

It used to be my Grandads tv and is still going strong after 10 plus years. Although I did get a bit panicky when we realised that suddenly the music was louder than the voices all the time and I thought it was on it's way out...then I discovered you can change the "balance" or something using the buttons on the front panel and ds had obviously been playing with it! All back to normal now thankfully!

40inch HD tv at mine, DH & I are geeky when it comes to tv/speakers/cables etc which is why we've got that sort of stuff.
Although we're already planning to get rid of surround sound when LO comes along... :(

I have a 27inch wide screen old fashioned big backed thing. It was £150 from Asda 7 years ago and still doing well (touch wood). TBH when it goes I will be getting another big backed one from the British Heart Foundation shop as I cant afford these new flatscreen ones.

The one in my bedroom is a titchy 14 or 16inch DVD combi. Again, a big backed one - got it for £15 off someone as it was "old fashioned"

we have a 24inch CRT
i am hoping it lasts until dd2 is old enough not to pull herself up on/poke/ dribble on any new one. she's only 7mo so i reckon we need to get at least another 18mo out of it.

I have a 46 inche flat screen which I bought recently but in fairness it was a treat for me out of my inheritence otherwise I would have never afforded (sp) to buy it

We have a 15-inch old telly from 1995. Many young visitors have commented on how small our tv is. Some grown-ups have visited and left thinking we don't have a tv. It's that small. Not sure when we'll upgrade. The thing is, the space around it has been colonised by junk...

Theoretically, a month ago, when the switchover happened. But DH insists he must research every aspect of a new one before we buy.

Mind you, I'm a bit surprised we haven't missed telly, and am considering just not having one at all. The only thing I'm a bit Sad about is The Apprentice, which I watch on iplayer, but just isn't the same on a diddy screen.

Sorry but to me an enormous tv just screams 'drug dealer'

we have never actually bought a tv. people feel sorry for us and give us their cast offs

28" old style CRT here. Works perfectly well so I shall not be replacing in in a hurry. To be honest as a personal preference I don't really like the HUGE ones. Don't even switch it on very often.
Would be very boring if we were all the same though.

i can't watch my 42 in, it gives me headaches but the husband and kids love the tele so i am out numbers ( give me a smaller one any day)

We have a 15" flat screen. I like it because it doesn't take up much space. Our last tv, a cast off from a neighbour, was a 32" fat one. It felt like we had a hulking monster in the room!
We got this one for 100$ off of a friend who bought it, but never used it (still in the box).
I like that 'never been used' style of second hand Grin
I figure, it is a small living room, and if you can't see the screen, then it would be better to invest in a pair of glasses!Wink

Our 26" TV 'blew' Hmm whilst I was away at my sisters last year DH phoned me about it and told me he'd bought a new one when I asked him what size he's got. He became very quiet he'd only went and got a 40" his excuse was as it was flat-screen it still fitted on the TV unit.

Before I had come home he had got rid of old TV and packaging as he knew i'd go and swap it for smaller TV.

We have a 32" flat screen. It's plenty big enough. They advertise them now as "ideal for the bedroom"?! I refuse to have a telly in the bedroom anyway (tis for shagging and sleeping only) but if I did it would be a nice wee dinky one. Not 32 inches worth.

Report

Ours is 28 or 32 and big enough. Don't need flat screen as it sits in a corner and the bulk of the TV isn't stopping us putting anything else there.
The digibox is working fine.
New TVs with the necessary unscrambling cables from DVD and video and digibox and retuning is a major fangle.
