Is this funny? Or is it just offensive?

A friend of mine (who knows my ds1 has ASD and I almost certainly have it too) told me at the weekend about a funny T-shirt he had seen

"Autistic Children Rock"

is that funny, to you? Or would you be offended?

Nope, bad taste and not funny whatsoever

papermate · 02/06/2011 13:15

Not nice!!!

amberleaf · 02/06/2011 13:16

Not funny.

Very offensive.

tomhardyismydh · 02/06/2011 13:16

not sure, maybe depends on who and why its being sold, if to raise money and awareness yes its ok I suposse, not sure its "funny" though.

gapants · 02/06/2011 13:16

That is really shit.

Did your friend understand the shitty joke? D'you think they didn't see the double meaning, just saw the positive one?

NulliusInVerba · 02/06/2011 13:17

Was he trying to be a twat or does it just happen naturally for him?

amberleaf · 02/06/2011 13:17

Also v offensive that your friend told you knowing your child is autistic.

travellingwilbury · 02/06/2011 13:18

I think it is meant to be offensive , but I suppose if she doesn't know the double meaning then I would maybe forgive her .

saidthespiderwithahorridsmile · 02/06/2011 13:20

well I did laugh actually, but I have a strange sense of humour

he was definitely aware of the double entendre

googling it, it does seem to be sold as a raising awareness thing, so obviously someone thought it wasn't offensive

but when I thought about it some more, I thought "I bet loads of people would be offended by that - I'll ask MN"

OP posts:
CandyS · 02/06/2011 13:20

I find it slightly amusing as a cheap pun, but not 'funny', certainly not memorable enough to tell someone abot it.

melpomene · 02/06/2011 13:20

I think it's funny (in a black humour way) but also offensive.

tomhardyismydh · 02/06/2011 13:21

just looked at them on amazon they are said to raise awareness but no money donated, so not sure the necessity. here

bupcakesandcunting · 02/06/2011 13:25

Can someone explain the double meaning for me please?

I don't think it's funny either, btw.

ScrotalPantomime · 02/06/2011 13:25

At first I thought it was nice and was wondering why everyone was so upset.

Then I got the double meaning.

Angry
ScrotalPantomime · 02/06/2011 13:26

Bupcakes - rocking back and forth is a very common autistic behaviour

tomhardyismydh · 02/06/2011 13:27

as in rocking to and fro bubcakes, an occassional coping mechanism to autistic and some other sn children to help with sensory overload or stress.

shineoncrazydiam0nd · 02/06/2011 13:27

It is not meant to be offensive - it is about raising awareness.

Do I think it's funny? No. Do I think it is offensive? No.

And I think it is better that the ' I'm not naughty, I'm autistic ' T shirt that also raises awareness.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 02/06/2011 13:28

Cannot see why it would be funny, would be hoping it was some kind of fund raising/positive message.

I think I am massively missing something in my ignorance, sorry.

BalloonSlayer · 02/06/2011 13:28

Oh I thought it meant they are cool.

I didn't get the other bit.

bupcakesandcunting · 02/06/2011 13:28

Thank you Scrotal. Definitely not funny! :(

sausagesandmarmelade · 02/06/2011 13:30

were they trying to be PC?

awful!

tomhardyismydh · 02/06/2011 13:30
