People just love to rub it in that I live in a shit area

My mum is the worst for it. She lived in a terrible area for 16 years until finally, last year she moved to the neighbouring village known for it's 'poshness' and rather expensive abodes. Although to be fair, it isn't THAT posh, yobs still hang around the bus shelter at night, the secondary school is well known for bullying and drugs and the burglary rate is quite high. But on the whole, it is a "nice" area. But she rubs it in all the time. For instance the other day she asked me "oh did you get the Poshington times this week? oh no, course not - you don't live in Poshington do you" Hmm Or "oo it's lovely and quiet around here, you never hear a thing - so, is it still really bad where you are then?"

Another thing is does is constantly tell me about houses that have come up for sale or rent near her:

"Oh a lovely 4 bedroom semi has come up for rent on the corner, why don't you enquire?" Hmm errr because I'm not earning the £50k a year needed to pay for it maybe? it's not rocket science - I'm a single parent on job-seekers allowance - how the hell would I be able to pay for a 4 bed semi in Poshington?

Another one: "Oh they're selling that house around the corner, needs a bit of work doing to it so you might get it cheap!" err ... yeah and they're really going to give me a mortgage on my jobseekers "income" arnt they Hmm

My partner does it as well though. Whenever I go to his house I get the constant "oh its so lovely around here" "its so quiet around here" "I love it so much around here" "I'd never move onto a council estate again, never" Hmm did you ok for 20 years previous though, didn't it??? Hmm

Then he slags off my area "Oh I wouldn't dare leave my car around your end" "that area is going downhill rapidly" "god I'm so glad I got away from here" etc etc - I wouldn't mind but he only moved out of this VERY HOUSE in March!!! All of a sudden he thinks he's too good for areas like this Hmm

It's doing my head in, why constantly rub it in?? I know I don't live down mayfair but I don't expect the people closest to me to get such smug satisfaction out of it!!!

Oh I hate this!!

I live VERY close to where Damilola Taylor was murdered, Yes I do worry about my DC BUT I love it here.

I hate it when people say things about my area.

"Oh why would you want to live there?"
"Its not a surprise your flat is damp look at where you live" hmm yes because the area would cause dampness

BUT MY VERY FAVOURITE!!!

"IF YOU MOVED AWAY FROM WHERE YOU ARE I AM SURE DS1'S ASPERGERS WOULD GET BETTER" ??????????????????????????

Do what I do and ignore them, they are probably jealous that your rent is so cheap Wink

Beesimo I like your DH's response!

PaddingtonStare · 01/06/2011 22:29

:o @ Beesimo

StrawberryMewMew · 01/06/2011 22:34

I know exactly how you feel and I hate it.

It's so bad here that when people mention the name they change half of it to the word shite.

I am actually getting very depressed living here as it is such a shithole, I live next door to a drug dealer and this has to be one of the worst areas ever. Someone was actually shot a couple of weeks ago.

I am determined to be out of here before my Son is born, I just can't bear the thought of him growing up here or having to put up with the ridicule I have for living here.

papermate · 01/06/2011 22:35

we dont live in a great area, but we have fantastic neighbours, we own our home and are happy.

I know someone who has just sold her house( in negativity equity) to rent in a better area, not 4 miles down the road, and after 1 year is moving back here, to rent, in a smaller house than they started off with, as they couldnt stand thier snobby neighbours!

Bizarly the one woman who constantly name drops our postcode, grew up here and her mums lives round the corner!!

usualsuspect · 01/06/2011 22:36

haters gonna hate

I don't give a toss what people think about my council estate

kitkatya · 01/06/2011 22:37

I get the same living where I do in London "oh, it used to be such a lovely area but Im so glad I dont live there anymore, its gone right downhill" which is there way of saying it is very multicultural. Sod them, I love it. I can be in town in twenty minutes, there's every kind of shop on my doorstep open all hours and, more importantly, I feel safe stumbling home on a night because theres always people around and about. And, its so cheap, I can afford to go on holiday when I want to. I would like a garden but, thats all I would like.

StrawberryMewMew · 01/06/2011 22:38

Oh and the back end of where I live is built over waste ground...

If you pass where that is, it smells disgusting, like rotting eggs. :(

expatinscotland · 01/06/2011 22:46

Fuck 'em. Seriously. Tell them to fuck off.

scurryfunge · 01/06/2011 22:49

We bought a house in a run down area and family questioned our judgement at the time. It was a tatty district with lots of run down houses and high crime.

In the 7 years we were there (and renovated the property) it was redeveloped and bistros, restaurants, boutiques started popping up. We made £120k profit and although I realise prices do not necessarily compare at the moment, all is not lost. Areas do change with a bit of investment and if decent people outnumber the less desirables, then they can be great areas to live in.

Jemma1111 · 01/06/2011 23:19

I live in a council area, my house is bought and paid for and its twice the size of some of these new 'rabbit hutch' size houses.
The area is clean and the neighbours are great, why should I move?

I couldn't give a rat's ass what people think of me, I'm a decent law abiding human being, I work and I raise my kids to be respectful of others. Those who look down on people like me because of where I live are just ignorant!
