And I am only slightly joking...

Namechanged to protect the innocent (me!)

Ok, I am presuming that I am not just being overly fussy as the flat was properly filthy, but all the reviews on several rental sites have it as 5 stars and spotlessly clean!!!

When the taxi pulled up outside, i thought it was a bit rundown, but ok, then we ventured inside. it is fair to say it could have done with being redecorated, peeling wall paper etc, but again, we thought ok.... then we went to explore.....

Kids get upstairs slightly before us "muuuuuum, the bin is full of wee!" go up to discover that the bin in the kids room is indeed full of urine...
-every corner of every room has cobwebs
-huge damp patch with flaking paint in one bedroom
-2 overhead lights don't work
-dirt all over the floor
-bins not been emptied since last guest
-doors are all filthy, ingrained dirt, living room door looks like someone sprayed a bottle of coke up it and didn't clean it
-kitchen overhead light fittings were white ceramic, with inches of dust on them
-bathroom was filthy, shampoo bottle left on floor behind sink with inches of dirt clearly hadn't been moved for years (literally)
-in the garden BBQ had been used as an ashtray around 50 cigarette buts floating in stinking dirty water.

Soooo we try to phone the owner, voicemail saying she is (conveniently) out of the country, leave a voicemail to ask her to call asap, also email her. There are no other phone numbers to contact anyone in an emergency.

Try to get somewhere else to stay but there is 8 of us and it's a bank holiday weekend, so the cheapest we can get is about £150 pp per night...so not ideal.

After a while realise we have no choice but to tidy up and stay....thankfully the bedding looked clean. We stayed out all day every day only going home to sleep (which totally added to the cost of our long weekend!)

On our last day a housekeeper arrives as we are leaving, she is roughly 15 and speaks hardly any English, I try to explain the way we found the flat, she giggles, realise we are getting nowhere so leave.

Email owner on arrival home, with all our complaints, she says it all must have been us and we are lucky she is not billing us for specialised cleaning. Says they have never had a complaint before, and to be fair all the reviews of it give 5 stars and say it is spotless (makes me wonder if they are all made up or wonder where the people who think it is spotless live!!!)

I have photos of everything on my phone....Anything I can do?

Oh dear: sounds really bad all round - esp. with regards to thingumy's link.

Thingumy · 01/06/2011 15:13

I like your review OP Wink

filthyflat · 01/06/2011 15:14

Can you see it? I didn't think it was up yet! Grin

I think if I get nowhere with the rental company i will just have to go back to my original plan of ruining her life! Grin

Thingumy · 01/06/2011 15:18

It's not on the holiday-rental site (Surprise, surprise!) but on another agency she's advertising with.

Good for you, seems like there is innocent people being scammed via H-R.

jellyvodkas · 01/06/2011 15:20

Stick to your guns. FILTHYFLAT and dont pay anymore than you feel you should. Dam darn cheek , if you ask me.... bloody landlady ! who does she think she is?

UrsulaBuffay · 01/06/2011 15:20

Sounds like she didn't get any report of how it was before you arrived so thinks you made the mess. I suspect the 15 yr old 'housekeeper'!

plupervert · 01/06/2011 15:27

Your review isn't on there.

And I am very Hmm about its being marketed as "Greenwich".

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 01/06/2011 15:28

Amazing how cheap run-down Plumstead suddenly becomes top dollar upmarket Greenwich in the lettings business!

plupervert · 01/06/2011 15:33

'Twas always thus, izzywhizzy! 'Tis the same in any kind of sales.

Greenwich itself would be Royal Greenwich, or the Royal Borough, or some such.

said · 01/06/2011 15:34

It says 12 reviews on the site but I can only see 5?

filthyflat · 01/06/2011 15:36

Ah I see my review on another site now! I think everyone should review it!! Grin

I also suspect the "housekeeper" hasn't cleaned for a long time and is now blaming us as she has been complained about.

On booking I did think we were booking a flat in Greenwich but MN put me right!

The plus side about being in Plumstead was my friend got her Iphone fixed in a dodgy looking shop for £20 and it now works, whereas she was quoted £130 back home!

To be honest we had a great weekend away, and if the owner had emailed back apologetically I would have let it go, but the rude email blaming us and threatening to bill us has really, really annoyed me!

OP posts:
filthyflat · 01/06/2011 15:36

I thought that too said, I wondered if you can just delete the ones you aren't happy with?

queenebay · 01/06/2011 15:37

Threaten small claims. We booked a holiday down south and long storyshort was it was filthy and crawling with ants. Owner wouldnt do anything and said if we were that bothered we could look for somewhere else. We would have down that but she wasnt going to give us any money back. Thankfully we took lots of pictures and took her to court where we won and got all money back including court fees!

filthyflat · 01/06/2011 15:41

I also just can't understand why the good reviews are good, I meant I am not particularly fussy and my house isn't always spotless, but I mean really the dirt had clearly been building up for a long time.

If it was my flat I would have been embarrassed to rent it out, even spending £50 would have improved it. All the towels were old with bleach stains and fraying and all the glasses were the free McDonalds ones with cracks, a good clean and a trip to ikea would make a huge difference!

OP posts:
filthyflat · 01/06/2011 15:43

That's interesting Queenebay, although would hate to lose and be lumbered with the court fees!!

OP posts:
plupervert · 01/06/2011 15:45

I thought the point of the small claims court was to make it worthwhile (low-risk/inexpensive) to pursue small claims.

NestaFiesta · 01/06/2011 15:47

I would threaten her with Trading Standards and state that you have photographic evidence. She cannot prove the place was spotless at the start of your holiday so she doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Thingumy · 01/06/2011 15:48

Whose to say those reviews are legit though OP.

Google 'Holiday-rentals.co.uk complaints'

Hmm
WincyEtNightie · 01/06/2011 15:52

I would have been inclined to blame the housekeeper too - maybe living there herself or letting friends stay there off season. But that doesn't make sense as there were reviews from people claiming to have stayed there in April this year.

I would write a long letter detailing everything that you found when you arrived - with every photo you took (hopefully date stamped though they would be hard pressed to blame you for the dust anyway and you would be going some to smoke 50 fags in a weekend Grin). Send recorded to landlady and agency. I would guess you would need this documented in this way if you were to pursue small claims etc.

ChildofIsis · 01/06/2011 15:54

I too think trading standards are your next step.
You paid for a 'product' that wasn't up to standard.

We have a 4 star holiday apartment and wouldn't dream of expecting our guests to stay in a dirty place.
Our agents are always available for the guests to contact in case of any problems.

Keep making a fuss, you deserve some recompense.

queenebay · 01/06/2011 15:57

It cost me £30 ( i think) to lodge it in court. We won back £500 including all costs

CatIsSleepy · 01/06/2011 16:10

wow that's really near where i live

it ain't greenwich!

can you really charge that much for a house in plumstead? wow

alemci · 01/06/2011 16:17

I think I would threaten to take her to the small claims court. Explain that you want your money back as the flat was filthy and you had to clean it. I assume you can prove when you took the photos. Not very technical with phones and photos etc but i would not have this.

what a cheek. email landlady and suggest this course of action before naming and shaming. She should ring you and sort if out.

katvond · 01/06/2011 16:21

Name and shame and get your money back filthyflat, shame them into paying you,did you take pictures of the state of it?

katvond · 01/06/2011 16:23

We stayed in a holiday flat last year and it was so damp,I took pictures, emailed agency and got money back plus a free 3 day break,so try it,you have nothing to lose apart from your sanity
