We have run out of granulated sugar. I cant be arsed am too busy to go to the shop tonight for more, but DP (who has broken his ankle and so can't go anywhere at the moment) says that caster sugar won't do as he doesn't like the taste. I don't drink tea or coffee and I'm a bit Hmm, but AIBU??

I've done the icing sugar thing Blush

scuzy · 31/05/2011 20:00

cheek of him! typical man response when he knows he is wrong!!

i'd swap the sugar for salt after that comment! lol

HeadfirstForHalos · 31/05/2011 20:06

Spoon for spoon it is sweeter, the smaller granules mean you can pack more on a spoon, that's what i meant when i said use less :)

MsFC · 31/05/2011 20:07

I am laughing A Whole Lot at you, cass! The FC says 'tell 'er, I don't like her tone!'

Tell me tell me what's the thing with icing sugar !?

stayathomegardener · 31/05/2011 20:17

In the 1970's my Mum used to put granulated sugar in the blender to make caster sugar-it was cheaper.

BlooferLady · 31/05/2011 20:22

I have consulted my sweet-tea-drinking philistine DH. He said (very loudly) SUGAR. IS. SUGAR.

"Tell her if she sticks three pieces of caster sugar together, it makes one granulated one."

HTH.

Casserole · 31/05/2011 20:23

Bloofer has hit on the perfect solution. He ends up with granulated sugar PLUS all the sticking together gives him something to fill his days with.

BlooferLady · 31/05/2011 20:25

Damn straight.

DH: "See, women can be funny too."

MsFC · 31/05/2011 20:29

I am actually CRYING with laughter! DP has his arms folded and is breathless with the effort of trying to look cross!

I used granulated in cakes - did for ages before I realised I wasn't uspposed to. Tastes as nice to me and gives the cake a bit of texture :o

HazeltheMcWitch · 31/05/2011 20:33

A caster sugar grain is approx 1/2 the size of a granulated sugar particle.

And icing sugar (in UK) is sugar ground up really finely, with anti-caking agent added - usually cornstarch, wheat flour, or calcium phosphate.

freeloader · 31/05/2011 20:42

Oh I get it 'anti caking agent'

Casserole · 31/05/2011 21:32

Oh, even better then! See MrFC? You only have to stick two together each time.

I think he should get his arse onto his crutches and hobble down to the corner shop and buy his own, MsFC. He likes undertaking impossible-seeming tasks after all

Other than that, I approve of the granule-sticking-together plan. Twill give him something with which to fill his convalescence.

Casserole · 31/05/2011 21:47

We all need goals.

freeloader · 31/05/2011 21:47

muser I think you've had too much icing sugar this evening

HazeltheMcWitch · 31/05/2011 21:48

Casserole, I am a sugar expert, and I categorically DID NOT look on Wikipedia.

NB some of the above statement may be a lie...

Ps - are you always so 'glass half-full'? I like that you see the positive in caster sugar!!

Casserole · 31/05/2011 21:58

Hazel I'm disappointed. I had you down as the UK Sugar Ambassador.

I have had a shit day with 2 small screamy children, a large glass of wine, 2 very SUGARY cupcakes (caster AND icing, if anyone's keeping score) and am now trying and failing to write a pointless essay. Sticking sugar together sounds therapeutic to me right now!

HazeltheMcWitch · 31/05/2011 22:01

I would like to be the sugar ambassador, Casserole. I have a VERY sweet tooth. I might consider employing MrFC if he proves to be effective at sugar-sticking. His career as a sugar taster is over, however.

Can I tell you my new thing though - Lindt choc with sea salt flakes. You must try it, it is delish. Maybe I can expand my empire to cover salt also?

SherlockMoans · 31/05/2011 22:07

YANBU - there is no difference whatsoever between caster and granulated sugar other than the size of the grains and the price of it - this is from someone who would think you were a complete philistine for using white instead of demerara in coffee (and call tell the difference)

I think hes trying to make the most of being incapacatated

Casserole · 31/05/2011 22:13

People keep telling me about this Hazel. But surely it takes all the fun out of binge eating? I mean, isn't the very POINT to veer wildly between the sweet and savoury cupboards in the kitchen until nearly sick?

HazeltheMcWitch · 31/05/2011 22:29

Not at all Casserole; it just adds another category to be troughed. I now have savoury, sweet, and 50/50 (salty choc).

Casserole · 31/05/2011 22:31

I don't think I have enough cupboards Grin
